1 M eadow Lak e Airport - C o l o r a d o S p r i n g s, C o l o r a d o Pike s Peak Flyer The Voice of EAA 72 November 2009 By Burrall Sanders Trip Report: Copperstate Regional Fly-in After having been weathered out of several fly-in s this year, my wife Joyce and I decided that we would go to the Copperstate event this year. It is held at Casa Grande Arizona (GDZ) in October of each year. We flew our CozyIIIx on the 2.5 hr flight from 00V to Sedona AZ where we got some breakfast at a good café on the field and some fuel for the Cozy so that I would not have to mess with getting fuel at the fly-in. Sedona is always a spectacular place to stop and the fuel prices are usually not too bad. After the 20 minute flight from Sedona to Casa Grande we arrived using the published NOTAM arrival procedures. Compared to OSH KOSH this is really simple and less intimidating but there is certainly enough traffic to warrant that you keep your eyes peeled. We wound up on downwind behind a RANS S-12. The NOTAM says to maintain 90kts, which I can do just fine in the Cozy but I do not think that the RANS was doing over 60 kts because we went whizzing right by on the outside. The temporary tower folks cleared me to land in front of the RANS when I was still on the down wind and he was about to turn base, the controller just told the RANS to follow the EZ, something he seemed to have no problem doing. Continued on page 3 Next Meeting Date: Tuesday, November 17th Time: Arrive 6:30 PM Start at 7:00 PM Place: MLAA Hangar Program: Is LSA For You? - Jim Van Namee (see page 2)
2 S PAGE 2 Thanks to those who Contributed to this issue of the Newsletter: Dave Elliott Burrall Sanders Important Dates: Next Meeting: November 17th Arrive 6:30 PM Jim Van Namee - CFI - Thinking about LSA Hot Web Links: NOAA Weather Virtual Flight Surgeons (VFS) Program: November 17th Jim Van Namee, CFII, is the Aviation Safety Officer at the Academy Aero Club. He is a retired Naval Aviator with over 6000 hours. PIKE S PEAK FLYER THE VOICE OF EAA 72 MLAA Special Meeting by Dave Elliott MLAA held a Special Meeting on Nov 9 th to discuss and vote on an offer for the Assn to purchase the old Penkhus property from Johnston Enterprises. The spirited discussion involved FAA grants for the principal and MLAA funds for interest, and focused on potential impact of the property on future airport construction and concern about continued FAA support for Meadow Lake. With proxies in hand, a whopping 97% of the voting interest of the Assn was represented at the meeting. 20,805 votes were cast for the offer (42.6%), and 21,150 votes were cast against the proposal (43.3%). The remainder of the ballots (approx 4,000) were proxies assigned to the Board of Directors. At the regular monthly Board of Directors meeting on Nov 10 th, I decided that a split Board voting on the remainder of the votes would only complicate an issue that was clearly too close to obligate the Assn at this time. Therefore, we have passed on the offer at this time and will pursue other alternatives/ variations in the near future. Of significance to the MLAA, and our EAA brethren, were the re- marks after the voting by Travis Vallin, Director, Colorado Div of Aeronautics. Travis expressed his continued support for Meadow Lake, and speaking for the FAA, addressed recent concerns and challenges for MLAA. Three specifics were covered, which the Assn Board of Directors has already been working on: Thru-the-Fence : is currently on hold, although the 41 residential lots should be grandfathered, and the Assn should not allow any add l lots to have access to the airport. Self-Sustainability: The Assn needs to address equitable access fees to the airport (runway complex) that the FAA has funded. Control Airport Access: The Airport Authority needs to address measures to control access to the runway, i.e.: restrict the ability of local teenagers to use the runway at midnight to drag race. All of these points were already under review by the Board and will be discussed in greater detail in an upcoming MLAA Newsletter. Calendar of Events Is LSA for you? Jim will discuss what it will take for you to transition to LSA. November 17th December 8th EAA Chapter 72 - Jim Van Namee Start 6:30 PM MLAA Hangar Holiday Banquet See card inside
3 NOVEMBER 2009 PIKE S PEAK FLYER PAGE 3 RUNWAY 15/33 CLOSURE - PAINT STRIPING Runway 15/33 and Taxiway A plus A1 through A7 will be closed in the near future to repaint the markings. The exact day will be dependent upon suitable weather conditions but may be as early as the week of November 16, Work will not occur on weekends. Closure of Runway 15/33 ideally will be only one day with the possibility of closing the taxiway for all or part of a second day. Runway 08/26 should remain open. Runway 08/26 was recently graded and is in good condition. notification will be sent once the exact date is determined but may be sent with only one day's notice and a NOTAM will be issued. Follow at Questions or comments should be directed to Ron Lee at (Continued from page 1) Casa Grande has a large apron and it was pretty much full. In fact, on Sunday a flight of at least 15 YAKS arrived and had to be parked in the aisles. They made an impressive over head arrival doing some really nice formation work. I heard an un-official count of 370 aircraft on the ramp Saturday. Many of the manufacturers of kit aircraft and LSA type were there as well as many other vendors. One particular aircraft that caught my attention was called a Savor. It is a very unique plane. It is a tandem, high wing composite and steel airframe powered by a Lycoming O-320. One thing that really interested me is that it was designed and built by a young man (maybe 30) from the Phoenix area. It is a beautiful and innovative airplane. I think it is really important to support and encourage young folks in aviation. Joyce and I visited for some time with the designer/builder Chris Christianson. He is a very nice unassuming guy that built the plane for his own use. Here is a link to a news story I found about the plane. 29_savor.asp Trip Report: Copperstate There were many other interesting planes at the fly-in, but I find the people even more interesting. Unlike most years in the past, we did not see anyone from back home. We did see many folks we have come to know over the years. The fly-in organizers rent and operate two vans and employ them as shuttles to get around to hotels, restaurants and also the banquet on Saturday night for a $5 donation. On Sunday morning we had a leisurely breakfast at the hotel and then caught the shuttle back to the airport and our Cozy. By 9am we were airborne and headed for Farmington NM (FMN) where we landed for a weather check as I could see lots of cloud over the Colorado Rockies. Sure enough the weather was forecast to stay lousy over the mountains for the rest of the day. The FBO (Atlantic Aviation) was good enough to loan us a crew car for the rest of the day so that we could find something to do in Farmington. The next morning the weather was spectacular for the 1:10 flight home. Copperstate is certainly a well run fly-in held in a good venue at a good time of the year. I expect I ll try and go next year as well.
4 PAGE 4 PIKE S PEAK FLYER THE VOICE OF EAA 72 President s Message Annual Holiday Banquet - Look for your invitation enclosed for the banquet planned for December 8th. We will also resume using this event to recognized members with much deserved awards. We look forward to seeing all of you there to share some of your holidays. Having said that, we know that there are times when you just can t make it. We work around it. If you would be interested in one of these positions, please let me know by at ssmartin2@fedex.com or call me at (719) If we have enough nominees, we may hold the election at the Banquet and if not, hold for the January meeting. Young Eagles - I want to extend my thanks to everyone who helped make the October 2009 Young Eagle Rally such a success. Special thanks to Garret Myers and Vann Norred for stepping in to handle everything when I decided at the last minute to go to Copperstate with Richard. You flew 45 kids that day. I m finalizing our numbers and registrations to complete the year. I know there are a few of you that have registration forms for flights other than the rallies. If you would like me to include them, just bring to the meeting or mail them.
