2 PAGE 2 PIKE S PEAK FLYER THE VOICE OF EAA 72 I have been a member of Chapter 72 since 2007 when I finished building my RV-8. I have participated as a Young Eagle pilot in two Chapters, 72 here in Colorado and 175 in Florida and have flown about 60 Young Eagles. I earned my Private Pilot certificate in 2004 and currently have 900 hours with 550 of those in my RV-8. I enlisted in the Army in 1987 as a Field Artillery Forward Observer and was stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. I attended the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course in 1991 and graduated from the Special Forces Qualification course as a Special Forces Medic (18D) in I was assigned to 10 th Special Forces Group where I spent the majority of my career. I retired in 2013 after nearly 27 years of service as a Sergeant Major. I look forward to being the Young Eagle Coordinator for EAA Chapter 72 and continuing the many successes that the chapter has enjoyed. In fact, there are twin bills in the works: FAA: Private Pilot Privileges without a Medical Certificate On Wednesday, April 2nd, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced it is beginning a rulemaking project that will consider whether to allow private pilots, in certain instances, to substitute a driver s license in lieu of a FAA medical certificate. It will be known as Private Pilot Privileges without a Medical Certificate. The announcement comes two years after AOPA and EAA jointly petitioned FAA to expand the third-class medical exemption to cover more pilots and aircraft at a time when the agency is under increasing pressure to take action. As part of the announcement the FAA said it is still considering the AOPA-EAA petition, which received 16,000 overwhelmingly positive comments. The FAA also said it will consider whether it can safely provide any relief to the medical requirement before the rulemaking process is complete. Congress: General Aviation Pilot Protection Act (GAPPA) Wednesday s rulemaking announcement by the FAA comes as legislation to expand the medical exemption has been gaining momentum in both the House and Senate. That legislation, known as the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act (GAPPA), would go a step further than the AOPA-EAA petition. Under GAPPA, pilots who make noncommercial VFR flights in aircraft weighing up to 6,000 pounds with no more than six seats would be exempt from the third-class medical certification process. Pilots would be allowed to: carry up to five passengers, fly at altitudes below 14,000 feet msl, fly no faster than 250 knots. Since several of us introduced the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act to expand the successful light sport standard to general aviation, support from all political stripes has been overwhelming, said Rokita. While I am encouraged by the announcement by the FAA today and look forward to studying the rule they propose, we will continue to push for the General Aviation Pilot Protection Act to spur growth in the general aviation industry and eliminate red tape. Its hard to believe that we are already into the middle of April already! Our EAA Calendar is filling up fast with many exciting projects. Weather kind of spoiled our Young Eagle event on the 22 nd last month but we had a nice make up day on the April 5 th and the next Young Eagle Rally is the 19 th. Don t forget that we are having a work day after the Young Eagle event to clean up a little in preparation for the May 24 th event. The name of which will be EAA Chapter 72 Open House at Meadow Lake Airport, Falcon Colorado I tried to come up with some other words to add to the name but none made any sense so I guess we will stick with the short version! Next month (May 13 th ) is the annual meeting of the MLAA Board. There are a lot of things going on with Meadow Lake Airport and I am sure that Dave will give us all a good op date. I think that every thing is very positive and exciting so plan on attending.
