He is spot on. Here is my story about my 150 mile or so road trip. This year I wanted to arrive early to the hot rod and Hatters meeting so I could get one of the GOOD parking spot and be able to sit about and watch the day s events on a city street walk way. So up and in the 54 and on the 5:30 am, still dark so head lights on. Light drizzle and fog about half way there, still, all is good. Then the engine starts to miss like it will sometimes and I hit the electric fuel pump switch expecting the engine to smooth out and purr again, but not this time and I get alarmed! Car stalls and I cost to a stop on interstate 10 east bound. Grass berm is wet and ground soggy so I did not chance getting stuck in the mud and am sitting on the shoulder of the interstate a foot from the road side strip. Big rigs flying by. What to do. I am in a fix!! Turn the key.click..click,nothing. Research GPS road side help and call a few nearby numbers that all go to message except one and he is on a job in another county. Pull out my membership roster which I have worked on for the last month or so and decide to call a few members who I think might be coming my way. Again to message, except Mark brains and again, in another county on the job!! Well, I am in a real fix! Get out and open the hood, Pour a cup of coffee and smoke a camel and figure I am going to have to get lucky here on the kindness of others and (continued on page 3) C H A P T E R O F T H E H U D S O N E S S E X T E R R A P L A N E C L U B Visit us on the texas-hudson.org F E B R U A R Y President Rodney s Notes Rodney Lemmon President 813A West Elmo Road Austin, Texas hotrodman2010@hotmail.com Phone: Mark Campbell Vice President 707 Yosemite Trail Taylor, TX markrc50@gmail.com Phone: Rodney Lemmon Treasurer 813A West Elmo Road Austin, Texas hotrodman2010@hotmail.com Phone: Paul/Elizabeth Thomas, Membership 2215 Crossbrook Ct. 3 OSCAR STORE Meeting January January 5, 2019 P A G E 3 (Continued from Page 1) sure enough a 67 Malibu stops and gives me a 12 volt jolt and my engine roars to life again. Without delay I head down the road another 8 miles and exit off the interstate and stall again at the first stop in front of a Buckie s gas station. Go in and ask about a nearby auto parts store which turns out to be 5 miles away. Ask about an uber or cab and the fellow laughs and tells me you are in a Lulling TX and we have none of that!! I am a city boy. HA. No choice but to start walking to the parts store and 3 miles down the road see a repair shop and walk in asking for help. The shop parts runner says he can help me out and drives me to Napa another few miles down the road. The Napa does not have a 6 volt battery!!! We had to drive another 16 miles down to Gonzales to get a new battery which Toni agreed to. Returned to my car and installed the new battery and off I go again 4 hours late and end up having to park three blocks away from the center of the event.. Just in case any of the folks that helped me out might read this, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Appears my batteries will only last three years and this is the third one I have had to replace. After registering for the event I came up to a fellow 54 Hudson from all places, Austin Texas! The owner Isaac and I had a long talk about his car and exchanged information so he can join the national and our Chapter, which I would be surprised if he does not. His Hudson has a good straight rust free body with I believe a 455 Buick engine. No doubt this car will get much attention in the next few years and is well on its way to being a very good driver. Although many Hudson members shy away from events like this, I find that many new younger car guys build Hudson s with big engines which are in my mind the way things are going in the future. I am reaching out to the next generation to replace me and my stocker driver. I invite any and all Hudson owners to be a part of our chapter because we need you. 6 P A G E 6 Sweethearts & Orphans X March 1-3, 2019, in Waxahachie, TX REGISTRATION NOW OPEN! S&O IS BACK FOR IT S 20 TH SEASON IN 2019!!! The North Texas Chapter of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club invites you to join us for Sweethearts & Orphans XX. We are back again in historic Waxahachie, Texas! As usual, S&O is open to ALL marques built prior to World War II. We believe all 1942 and earlier vehicles are of historical significance and want the public to see the cars that changed America and the world. We are also excited to continue our Friday Driving Tour for those who enjoy touring as much as showing. Meet proceeds will be donated to two great non-profit organizations. Half of the proceeds will be used to support the great work of the American Heart Association. The remaining portion will be donated to the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Historical Society, the educational foundation related to the HET Club. The main reasons for S&O will never change: (1) to bring "orphan and vintage car owners together to make and renew friendships; and (2) to take time during the Valentine Season to honor the wives, girlfriends, or significant others that put up with our old car obsession all year long. So, c mon, join us Those who have attended in the past will tell you that we have a great time together! To clarify, orphan cars are those wonderful, historic automobiles whose manufacturers have disappeared into the mists of time great American independent marques like Hudson, Studebaker, Willys, Graham-Paige, Nash, Kaiser-Frazer, Packard, AMC and hundreds of others. There are also corporate orphans historic marques from Chrysler, Ford, and GM such as LaSalle, DeSoto, Edsel, and more. Recent orphans like Plymouth, Oldsmobile, Mercury, Pontiac and others are also welcome, but we ask participation of pre-1990 cars only, original or restored to stock or stock appearance. No customs or rods, please! We love all cars but S&O s focus is on automotive history, not automotive art! Sweethearts & Orphans will continue to be a non-judging meet. S&O meets aren t about competition. We just want people to admire and enjoy our unique and historic cars, establish friendships, and enjoy a weekend in a friendly, laidback setting. There will be Peoples' Choice Awards (by decade) and a Sweethearts Choice Award, but good friends and great memories remain the real prizes of this meet. Join us for all of our events From beginning to end, S&O is just fun, fun, fun!!!

7 P A G E 7 EVENTS This year s Friday driving tour will take us around Ellis County. The route will be about 60 miles, on fairly level paved roads and a few hills, with as much of the route as possible on FM roads with minimal traffic. We ll depart from the host hotel at approximately 9:00 AM and return about 3:15 PM. Drivers meeting will be at 8:45 am. We will have lunch on your own in Maypearl along the way. We ll also make a few convenience stops touring several interesting places and visit a local school to allow their students to see our wonderful automobiles. For those who don t care to join our Friday Driving Tour, Waxahachie has many options for self-driven, self-paced tours as well as historic and shopping destinations that you can take in on your own during the day on Friday. The goodie bags will have local maps and information in them. We will have our traditional Thursday and Friday Evening Hospitality Nights at the host hotel, starting about 5:30 PM. Snacks and beverages will be provided and, as always, we invite you to bring snacks, desserts, drinks and other treats to share. It s great fun, so whether you re meeting old friends or making new ones, don t miss out and BYOB! The Saturday Car Show N Shine will be held around the beautiful and historic Ellis County Courthouse in downtown Waxahachie. The show will start at 10:00 AM. Let us remind you that your car doesn t have to be a #1 show car If it can make it to Waxahachie, we want to see it! We ask that you keep your car on-site until at least 2:30 PM, although the show will formally end at 3:00 PM. Downtown Waxahachie has lots of shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and such for those who tire of tire-kicking (perish the thought!!!). We will have parking helpers onsite around the square. Parking will be allocated on a first come, first served basis in the parking slots along the inside of the square (the Courthouse side of each street. In previous years, we ve tried to order cars by year or marquee, but most seem to prefer to stake out a spot with their friends or clubs. Most clubs are very effective at self-organizing. We will make space available in a separate area for non-orphan post-wwii vintage cars for friends accompanying S&O participants, but please note that only cars that fall within S&O s criteria are eligible for S&O awards. However, EVERYONE, including the public, is eligible to participate in the 50/50 raffle. It s for a great cause buy LOTS of tickets! In addition, this year we are including tours of several Victorian and period homes for those who have tired of tire-kicking. This will be on Saturday from noon to 3 PM. Departure by rental busses will be in front of the Ellis County Museum.

8 P A G E 8 Our crowning event - Sweethearts Date Night will take place on Saturday night at 6:30 PM. The location is the Ellis County Women s Building located at 407 W. Jefferson (3 blocks SW of the Courthouse.) Dinner will be catered by Olive Garden as we enjoy entertainment. Remember, the event starts at 6:30 PM and will finish by 9:30 PM. (NO BYOB!) The Awards Presentation Meeting (and the 50/50 Drawing) will take place at the host hotel at 9:00AM on Sunday morning. You will be on your way home by 10:30 AM or earlier. REGISTRATION Please register for S&O using the attached pre-registration form. Then all you need to do at the show is check in at the hotel S&O Registration Desk. NOTE! Registration for the Saturday evening event (limited seating) closes February 13, 2019 same as hotel to meet the deadline for ordering catering service. On-Site Registration for the car show only will open at the host hotel on Thursday evening, February 28, around 7:00 PM. Registration will also be open from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM on Friday, March 1st, prior to our Friday Driving Tour. Registration will reopen at the host hotel on Friday evening around 5:30 PM. On Saturday, car show registration will be open in the Ellis County Museum by the courthouse square from 9:00 AM-11:30 AM. Parking helpers will be present beginning at 9:00 AM. We ask that you arrive with your car between 9:00 AM and 9:50 AM, and display your car from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. HOST HOTEL Our host hotel will be the LaQuinta Inn & Suites at 311 Stadium Drive, Waxahachie, TX Please call the hotel s local number ( ) and tell them you are with the Sweethearts & Orphans group to get our special rate of $69.00 plus tax for either a king or double queen. The hotel will fill up fast and the room block will only be held until February 13 th. Book soon to make sure you get into this excellent facility and BYOB! We selected the La Quinta because it has a marvelous, friendly staff, a large lobby with several roomy, comfortable seating areas, an elevator, fitness center and a very large meeting room. The parking area is very large and additional trailer parking is available nearby on the street. Our rate includes hot breakfast and all rooms have a refrigerator, microwave oven, coffeemaker, free Wi-Fi, and HDTV. One caveat this is a 100% smoke-free hotel indoors there are benches outside for smokers. It is also pet friendly. If La Quinta is full you may choose any other of several hotels located nearby. 50/50 RAFFLE FOR THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION We will have a 50/50 Raffle again this year. Raffle tickets may be purchased during preregistration and at the meet. If you re not familiar with 50/50 raffles, the holder of the winning ticket gets 50% of the money collected from raffle ticket sales. The remaining 50% of the pot goes

9 P A G E 9 to the charities supported by our meet. The more tickets you buy, the cheaper they get! Our biggest winner so far - took home nearly $1000! It s for good causes be generous!
