3 Spring and Fall Cleanup Days and S.T.O.P. Collection Days The Town of Babylon will hold free Cleanup Days on Saturday, April th and Saturday, October th, rain or shine, from 8:00 A.M. to :0 P.M. at the Residential Recycling Center located on Field Street in West Babylon. For the Spring and Fall cleanup days, residents are permitted unlimited free trips with an automobile and one free trip with pickups, vans or trailers ( feet by 8 feet). These cleanup days are free of charge. Any vehicle larger than a van or pickup truck will not be permitted. No commercial waste is accepted. Acceptable items include furniture, white goods (such as stoves and dishwashers) and wood products such as fencing, paneling and brush. Unacceptable items include car and boat parts, or demolition debris. Wood items must be cut into foot lengths. Spring and Fall Cleanup Days are also designated S.T.O.P. Collection Days from 8:00 A.M. to :0 P.M. This program allows residents to bring household hazardous wastes to the Town of Babylon Residential Recycling Center for safe disposal. Participation in this program is vital to insure safe drinking water and a healthier environment for the future. Please label all material. The following are examples of household hazardous wastes accepted by the Town: Acids Aerosol cans Antifreeze Automotive fluids/care products Bug and rodent killers Cleaning products Driveway sealer Fluorescent bulbs Freon canisters Full propane cylinders Gasoline Granular fertilizer containing insecticide Oil paints and stains Liquid chlorine Mercury containing products Pesticides/insecticides Powdered chlorine Thinners and reducers Pool chemicals. Contact the Residential Recycling Center at 9-96 or Your Roads Dedicated roads in the unincorporated hamlets of the Town of Babylon are maintained by the Department of Public Works (DPW). For assistance with Town roads, please call. There are also several state and county roads within the Town of Babylon. If you experience problems with state or county roads, you may contact the proper authority for assistance. 6 Babylon Celebrates Black History Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Department of Human Services Commissioner Madeline Quintyne-McConney hosted the Town s 0th Annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School. The event was titled African Americans in Times of War, and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees. The event honored 0 veterans from Long Island for their services in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Each veteran answered the call to action and put his or her life on the line overseas. In addition to these veterans, three others who were killed in action were also recognized. Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Wyandanch Memorial Post 6 and Martin A. Kessler Post 9, as well as Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 8 were honored for their commitment to serving veterans in the Babylon community. Long Island Ave. Southern State Pkwy. 8 White Goods ENCON will pick up white goods on Wednesdays; however, you must call ahead to reserve pickup. Contact ENCON at 9-00, Monday through Friday from 9 A.M. to P.M. and a representative will give you the date your white goods will be picked up. You need to call by Friday for pickup the next Wednesday. Please put the item at the curb in front of your house. For safety s sake, please remove all doors from refrigerators and freezers. White Goods Are: Metal Desks Metal Cabinets Compactors Metal Dehumidifiers Cut Up Oil Tanks Aluminum Sheds (Bundled, tied, under and 50 lbs. or less) Yard Waste Yard waste is collected separately from garbage by Yard Waste Zone () months of the year. Only 0 yard waste items may be put out per week Bags of grass and leaves must be under 50 lbs. Disposal regulations for tree debris (tree branches less than in diameter) require that trimmings must be bundled, securely tied, under feet long and under 50 lbs. If collected on the same day, Please make sure to separate yard waste from regular garbage by placing yard waste on one side of your driveway and regular garbage on the other side. Dirt, sod and rocks cannot be collected. PLEASE NOTE: Yard waste will not be picked up on holidays and will be picked up the next week on your scheduled day. Recycling Information REMEMBER Excessive amounts of material could result in fines and cleanup costs. Put ONLY the material to be collected at the curb. DO NOT put material out prior to :00 P.M. the day before the specific collection. Residential Recycling Center The Residential Recycling Center, located on Field Street off Edison Avenue in West Babylon, is open for drop-off of recyclable materials weekdays from 8:00 A.M. to :0 P.M. If you have any questions concerning the Residential Recycling Center, please call 9-96 or Acceptable Items for drop-off at the Residential Recycling Center include: plastics, glass, waste oil, car batteries, computer paper, telephone books, rocks, bricks, E-waste/electronics*, household batteries, bicycles (for Adopt-A-Bike program), junk mail, oil filters, metal/aluminum cans, polystyrene, newspapers, cardboard, concrete (small pieces), four tires with or without rims, propane tanks and used clothing. E-Waste/Electronics Due to new regulations by New York State, e-waste and electronics will no longer be collected at curbside. This includes but is not limited to: Computers and accessories Cathode ray tubes Personal music players Televisions VCRs/DVD players Tablets To properly dispose of e-waste, residents may either return the item to the place of purchase, drop them off at the Residential Recycling Center (see above and back cover) or call 9-97 to schedule a pickup. Residents may also utilize reimbursement programs offered by companies such as Amazon and Gazelle. Like us on Facebook for Town news and events Glass/Cans/Plastic Pickup When this symbol appears on your Recycling Calendar, ENCON will pick up glass, metal cans and plastics from your curbside in your blue recycling bin or clear plastic bags. ENCON cannot collect recycling material from any other type of receptacle. Aluminum & Metal Cans: Please rinse cans. The labels may remain in place. Glass Jars and Bottles: Please rinse jars and bottles. Labels may be left on. Remove caps, lids and wire rings. Do not break glass or put plate glass, drinking glasses, light bulbs or window panes in the bin. Plastic Bottles: Please rinse plastic bottles and remove caps and pumps. To fit more containers in your recycling bin, flatten them. Newspaper, Phone Book, Magazine and Cardboard Box Pickup When this symbol appears on your Recycling Calendar, ENCON will pick up properly wrapped newspapers from your curbside. Wrap newspapers in twine or put them into paper bags. Do not use plastic bags for holding newspapers. Magazines, junk mail, cardboard boxes and telephone books will be picked up along with newspapers. These items should be bundled and tied. Please put out newspapers regardless of the weather. Do not use recycling can or garbage pails to put your newspapers out. PLEASE NOTE: Greasy pizza boxes can contaminate other recyclables. Please place them in your regular garbage pickup.

For hours and additional information, please call (6) Street Sweeping Program Information You may have noticed some numbers in shaded circles on the recycling calendar. The circled numbers correspond to Sweep Zones in the Town s Street Sweeping Program. The Town s Street Sweeping Program will commence in April. Before the program begins you will receive written notification in the mail indicating what sweep zone you live in. This year, each zone will be swept four times between the months of April and October. In the event of inclement weather, Fridays during the months of April through October (excluding July) will be used for makeup days. Please remember to remove obstacles from the street on your scheduled sweeping days. Make sure to move automobiles, basketball hoops and other obstacles from the curb line so that our sweepers can be as thorough as possible.

11 April 09 Pickup Tip: Keep your garbage collectors safe and your streets clean by never putting liquid paints out to the curb. Paint cans that get crushed in the back of trucks often spew paint. A completely renovated field at Birchwood Park gives local athletes a premiere facility to play soccer, lacrosse and football. New features at beach facilities focus on handicap accessibility, making them even more welcoming to all residents of the town. 14 Donate to the Town Food Pantry The Town of Babylon Food Pantry is in need of donations year-round! Drop off a non-perishable food item to any of the below locations: Dept. of Human Services Commerce Blvd., Amityville, NY 70 Town Council Office 00 East Sunrise Hwy., Lindenhurst, NY 757 Annual Soldier Bike Ride Raises Tens of Thousands for Veterans Last July, over a thousand bicyclists braved the heat and made their way through the Town of Babylon to raise money for injured service members as part of the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride. The 5-mile ride starts at Town Hall in Lindenhurst and winds through the Town, crossing Robert Moses State Bridge and ending at Overlook Beach. Last year s ride proved to be a great success, raising over $90,000 for our wounded servicemen and women. Stay tuned to the Town s website and Facebook for more information aout this year s ride. General Collection Information These requirements are established to ensure the cleanliness of our neighborhoods and the safety of our residents and workers. Please read these guidelines carefully to alleviate confusion. If you have any questions, call 9-00 BEFORE you put the material at the curb. Pickup Information Use only standard gallon pails with lids, molded handles and no tie-down straps. No material can be above the top of the can. The night before, put items at the curb, within one foot from the street in front of your home Do not store material at the curb. Only put out material that will be collected that day (garbage on garbage days, yard waste on yard waste days). Multi-family homes should put all material at one spot per house. Do not mix garbage with yard waste or building material. Separate garbage bags from bags containing yard waste. Keep all garbage cans, bags and bundles under 50 lbs. Do not use the blue recycling can for garbage or newspapers. Your material can only be collected from in front of your house. Make sure your garbage cans are clear of any parked vehicles. Make sure your materials are not placed at the side of any vehicle. If your yard waste is picked up on the same day as your regular garbage, please separate at the curb. Furniture (Bulk Items) One item of furniture will be taken with each garbage pickup. Furniture is: a couch, a mattress and box spring, a dresser, one room-size rug (rolled and tied, cut into sections in length and under 50 lbs.) Make sure that garbage and furniture are at the same location. Remember, only one item per garbage pickup. Limited Construction Debris ENCON will pick up debris - up to two items - on your Thursday or Friday garbage day. Place items at the curb the night before pickup and please follow these instructions: Building material from major renovations cannot be taken. Wallpaper, tile, plaster, etc. must be in a container and weigh less than 50 lbs. Lumber and small diameter pipe must be securely tied in bundles not more than feet in length and less than 50 lbs and cannot be over the top of the pail. Paneling and sheet rock must be in a container or securely tied in bundles no larger than feet x feet and less than 50 lbs. Please remove nails from boards to avoid injury. Put glass in a garbage can or securely wrapped in cardboard, marked glass. Do not put broken glass in cardboard boxes, plastic bags or blue recycling can. X Railroad Ties will be accepted if they are under feet in length and securely tied in bundles less than 50 lbs. Sawdust will be accepted if it is in a securely tied plastic bag weighing less than 50 lbs. Other size tanks can be returned to dealer.) If you need to dispose of any item and are not sure how, please call the Residential Recycling Center at 9-96 or call the Sanitation Department at Miscellaneous Information If cardboard boxes contain garbage, they must be tied securely with rope. When disposing of barbecue or fireplace ash, be sure it is cold before putting it in a plastic bag and tying it securely for pick up. Latex (water-based) paint can only be disposed of in your regular garbage if can is less than 5% full and contents are dried out. Fuller cans must be brought to the Residential Recycling Center. Oil-based paint needs to be sealed and double bagged. One passenger vehicle type tire with or without a rim will be picked up on the second pickup day or can be brought to the Residential Recycling Center. The Residential Recycling Center will accept up to tires with or without rims.

18 Town of Babylon Beautification Program Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, Chairperson NYU Winthrop Hospital Gives Back to the Local Community NYU Winthrop Hospital sponsored the new beautification site located on the corner of Grand Blvd and Carll s Path in Deer Park. The beautifully landscaped site includes sod, irrigation, landscape amenities and myriad perennials that adorn a new carved sign which reads; The Deer Park Community Welcomes You, a symbol of the cohesiveness of the Deer Park community and its residents. The Town of Babylon Adopt-A-Spot Program was designated to help enhance the overall appearance of our town. The program invites professional landscapers or community groups who want to beautify a Town-owned parcel of land to adopt that spot for a minimum of two years. NYU Winthrop Hospital Adopt-A-Spot site. Town of Babylon officials join Senator Boyle and Assemblyman Raia at Rt. site. Route Sidewalk Improvement Project As a quality of life and safety initiative, the Town of Babylon, Senator Phil Boyle and Assemblyman Andrew Raia partnered and secured funding to have the necessary improvements made to the Parkdale pedestrian triangle as well as the sidewalk areas from Parkdale Avenue north to Weeks Road. The three-week project included the implementation of dyed-stamped concrete, new sidewalks, a decorative retaining wall and new entrance and exit aprons that were brought up to ADA code. North Babylon community leaders were a welcomed part of the vision and planning process and assisted in bringing the project to fruition. International WeLoveU Foundation Clean-Up & Community Service Project Then, Now and Forever Campaign to Unite The Global Family The International WeLoveU Foundation participated in its Clean WORLD Movement by participating in the Town of Babylon Beautification Program s Adopt-A-Highway initiative. The dedicated and community-minded participants cleaned-up, raked leaves and removed trash and litter along Acorn Street from Deer Park to Wyandanch. The Town of Babylon established its Adopt-A-Highway program in an effort to improve the quality of life in the Babylon community by keeping our roads and streets clean. Organizations, businesses or individuals who volunteer to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program commit to collecting litter along a specific stretch of road in the Town. 24 The Town of Babylon Salutes Our Veterans Councilwoman Jackie Gordon Chair, Veterans Advisory Council Retired Lt. Colonel - U.S. Army Reserves Babylon s Annual Run for the Warriors Supports Armed Service Members The Town of Babylon is a Purple Heart Town Veterans Monument at Town Hall Now Honors Veterans of All Major Conflicts Last year, the Town of Babylon hosted a K walk and a 5K and 0K race with the organization Hope for the Warriors and Local 8. The Run for the Warriors TM raised money to assist men and women wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq. Wounded service members and hundreds of runners from our communities participated in the run. Please check the Town website for the date and time of this year s event. If you are interested in participating or volunteering, please visit The Town of Babylon s veterans memorial at Town Hall Park was updated last November to include operations in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Afghanistan and all operations past and present. The monument, which already honored veterans from the Town of Babylon who served in World Wars I and II, had its base engraved with the new additions. It can be found on the west side of the pond in Town Hall Park and is open to the public. Veterans Awareness Week in the Town of Babylon The Town of Babylon begins Veterans Awareness Week the week before Veterans Day with a ceremony in the Town Board Room to honor our nation s service-members and recognizes the sacrifices that they and their families have made. Our military veterans are invited to participate in the program and the winners of a town-wide school essay contest are announced.
