I hope everyone got the chance to enjoy the great weather and riding conditions. As many people are aware Dawn and I spend a number of days between Tulsa and Austin. Dawn's mom passed away on 9 October and Dawn was at her bedside during the last days. The passing of Dawn's mom reminds me of how short life is and that we need to live every minute and enjoy ourselves at whatever we do. Barb's passing pulled me back to when my mom and dad died in 2008 (Mom in May and Dad in Sept). Again, it was their time and there are so many happy memories we have to reflect on. Dawn's mom was a great person, as well as my parents, and I choose to remember the fun times and not dwell on the end time. This month we had a number of rides and I talked with Mark and Margaret about their Big Tex Rally ride. This was a very interesting ride that started in North Texas and took them to Del Rio then back to Austin and Galveston area and finally back to the DFW area. I am hoping they put an article in the NL that will give you more background about the ride. The one thing I found interesting about the ride is it was kind of a scavenger hunt. Their ride took 2 days and I believe they covered around 1,500 miles. We talked about the concept for a ride for Chapter O. This would be a great idea for a day ride that would start at a central location and enable everyone to take their own route to end up at a destination. Don't worry we are only talking about a couple of hundred miles that can be covered in about 6 hours. (continued on page 3)

(continued from page 1) The planning would be pretty involved and Mark is giving this a lot of consideration. I am not sure when of if we will have this ride but is sounds like a lot of fun. Between the travel back and forth to Tulsa I was in town to lead the T/H ride (Taylor / Horseshoe Bay). It was about 200 miles and we started in Dripping Springs with stops at the Oak Hill Y and Manor to pick up additional folks. During the ride we stopped at the T2 Birthday party in Georgetown. By 1 pm we were in Horseshoe Bay. The idea was to eat pie at the Bluebonnet Cafe but my time was short and I had to get home and grab the car to head back to Tulsa. That was the day we had the rain storm coming south and I drove directly into the storm. Just north of Atoka it rained so hard I could not see the road for about 8 miles. I crept along at about 10 / 15 mph just to see if I could get out of the rain. Fortunately I was able to get though and arrived in Tulsa around 11 pm. Hind sight being as good as it is, it may have been a better choice to leave early Sunday morning. Coming up in November we will have a Texas District Education day in the Houston area on 10th and I believe some people will participate in the Texas Honor Ride on the same date. If you plan to do the honor ride please contact the ride coordinator. The next weekend a number of us will be headed to Koyote Ranch to camp out. We always have fun camping at Koyote Ranch and the riding in the hill country is fantastic. Dawn and I plan to camp out in our new Kwik Kamp on Friday and Saturday, I think Billy and Tim will be there for a full week starting around Wednesday the 14th. I also hear Jim Dumas will be there to spin some tails from his summer stay in Colorado. Jim is one of the best story tellers I know. As for Thanksgiving Dawn and I will be heading up to Waxahachie on Tuesday to be with the family. My sister always has a great Thanksgiving dinner planned and it has become a family tradition. I can usually get a couple of golf games in with my brother-in-law Please do not forget to make plans to be with everyone for the Christmas Party on Saturday December 1st. The party will start at 12:30 at Mel's bowling lanes in Georgetown. To get to Mel's traveling north on I-35 take exit 261A (Williams Drive). At Williams Drive turn Right then turn left on North Austin Ave and travel a short distance and see the sign on the left. We will be in the center of the facility at their function room. Dawn and I stopped there to eat and discuss the arrangements. The food was great and the people were very accommodating. At the next Chapter Gathering we will go over the menu and make the decision on what we will have. We have decided on Mel's Home Style Buffet as the venue. The options for Chicken Fried Steak, Fried Chicken, Fried Catfish, and Grilled Chicken Breast. There are a number of sides as well as a garden salad. CJ's Sports Bar and Grill is the facility that services the bowling alley and all the elections for the event can be found on their web site at Go down the page to the Home Town Buffet to view the options. Again, we will make the choices at our chapter gathering in November. Some of the bowlers in the group have decided to stay after the party and bowl for an hour. If you are interested in bowling please contact me or let me know at the November Chapter gathering. As for last months GWRRA numbers in the NL, Steven Bethke claimed his number but Bob Bolander must have missed his number located about in the middle of page 5. Congratulations Steven, since we do not have a December regular chapter gathering (it is replaced by our Christmas Party) you will need to claim your prize by the January Chapter Gathering. As for Bob you will have to spend more time reading the NL to make sure you do not miss the next time your number appears. As for everyone else keep you eyes open and look for your number. 4 Educator s Desktop By Randy Reese Fall Motorcycle Riding Ahhh Fall in Texas! The weather is final getting cooler and we are getting some long overdue rains. Like the spring, this is when most of us try to maximize our riding tine with the wonderful weather. However, Fall riding does require some preparation too. The key to fall motorcycle riding is to become a weather forecast addict, wear the proper riding clothing and gear, and keep alert for dangerous physical and environmental conditions. Keeping yourself tuned into the local weather forecast is important because you can predict what gear to wear and take with you. For example, in the Fall, you can leave for a ride at 11:00 a.m., 70 Degrees, but by 6:00 p.m. the sun is setting, rain is drizzling and the temperature has dropped to 50 degrees. If you didn t take a rain suit and only had a medium weight jacket, you are setting yourself up for hypothermia. Riding a motorcycle at 50 degrees in the rain at 70 mph with the wind chill can feel like 38 degrees and it cools your body temperature so that your core body temperature of 98.6 degrees can fall rapidly. Hypothermia results when your core body temperature falls below 95 degrees or less. Your weight and health also affects how quickly hypothermia can set in. For example, people with thyroid problems or diabetes have a lower tolerance to colder temperatures and can develop symptoms quicker than a person with no health issues. such as a heated vest liner or jacket. Always ensure that your head is covered, as most body heat escapes through the head. Waterproof boots and insulated gloves are a must. Carry a rain suit so that if it should drizzle, you have protection to keep you dry. A rain suit is also good insulation from the wind when worn over other clothing. Remember that low lying areas, heavily wooded areas, and areas by the water are usually colder than flatlands, so dress appropriately for the areas you will be riding in. Also be aware that low lying areas by the water usually have fog rolling off of the water and can limit visibility. Be aware of Fall hazardous motorcycle road conditions such as slippery wet leaves on the roadway hiding potholes or slick spots and heavy fog reducing visibility. There is nothing like riding on a warm Fall day under a canopy of swirling leaves. Remember that the days are shorter and you will probably do more night riding, especially with Daylight Savings Time changing. Make sure you wear visible clothing that automobiles can see. Understanding your motorcycle, your body, and the environment will greatly increase your chances of a great ride in any weather. Dressing for success is not just for jobs, but for a successful ride as well Ride Safely, Ride Often, and HEY! Be careful out there! RMR Hypothermia is caused by extended exposure to cold temperatures or a damp environment. Hypothermia is extremely dangerous when motorcycle riding because the symptoms aren t always noticed until a lethal mistake is made. Symptoms of mild hypothermia are: stumbling, mumbling, changes in motor coordination, having to think about control placement, missing gears, being wobbly at stops, hands may start feeling stiff and tight, and you may experience a slight shivering. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop immediately and warm up. If you are wet, try to dry off as best you can. Drink plenty of warm liquids and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and cigarettes, as they constrict blood flow. Stay in a warm environment until you can ride without any of the above symptoms. Proper gear can help prevent hypothermia. Wear layers of light clothing and consider investing in heated gear, Level 1 Mark and Margaret Level 1 Hubert and Linda 4

From the Desk of David Vidrine Texas District Director Communication is the Key How many times have you heard at a job seminar or function that Communication is the key to Success. Communication is needed not only at your job but in your marriage and with family and friends. Yes, communication is even needed with GWRRA. The definition for communication is: A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior. Chapter Directors need to let their chapter members know they are always there and always ready to listen to new ideas and suggestions. You may have a chapter member who may not feel comfortable suggesting new ideas due to the fact they are new. We all need to make sure we let everyone know that we want their feedback and we are listening. Again, it s important to have communication within your chapter. If you have good communication within your chapter, then I believe you will have more members participate in rides and events. The more people you have participate, the more fun you will have. Who doesn t like to have fun? I have met with some chapters here in the Houston and outlining areas. I am still working on attending chapter gatherings out of town. I have gone so far to Georgetown, McKinney, Killeen, Lake Jackson, Dallas-Fort Worth. As I stated before my goal is to try to make a chapter gathering or ride for each chapter in Texas. It might take me awhile, but that is my goal. If there is anything you need to discuss or want to see me about, give me a call or shoot me an and I will be happy to meet with you. The District staff is always here to meet with you and help out anyway we can. From the Region H Director Bill & Dean Ann Gray IS GWRRA GOING AWAY? Depends! As I mentioned last month, GWRRA is not just an organization, it is people! It is all of us playing together, learning together and having fun with friends. Oh yes and don't forget the members who choose not to participate but remain members for a variety of reasons. We ask our MEC's to work the ARL and contact new and prospective members! Why you ask? We don't want them to miss the excitement, new friends, learning opportunities and safer riding that GWRRA promotes. IS GWRRA GOING AWAY? Not on our watch! One of our goals is to make sure "Operation H - No Winger Left Behind" is alive and well in all 75 chapters of Region H. EVERY MEMBER COUNTS! By recognizing new members each month at your gatherings and in newsletters you will make them feel special and needed as a chapter participant. By continuing to keep the "aging" members involved and participating you will maintain the experience and "fun factor" of a successful chapter. Make a difference in someone else's life and your life will change as well! HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Bill & Dea Ann Gray 6

Big TexRAlly Mark and Margaret As many of you know, Margaret and I competed in the BigTex Rally last weekend. The rally was a 36 hour scavenger hunt with bonus locations across the great state of Texas. During the Rally we rode a total of 1550 miles in 35 hours. This included taking a mandatory 6 hour rest break Friday night. The Rally started in Denison on the northern border with Oklahoma and ended just south of Dallas. We rode up Thursday and spent the afternoon at the Texas State Fair before going on to Denison. The rally started at 6:00 am on Friday and ran until 6:00 PM Saturday. By the time we arrived home Sunday evening we had covered around 2300 miles. Galveston 1900 Tragedy Memorial Day 2 Here is our route. Blue line was Friday, Green line was Thanks for all of your prayers. Hanging with Teddy at Scultworx in downtown Houston Day 2 Here are a few pics from the ride: Us in front of BigTex the day before he caught on fire. No! It's just a coincidence! Margaret won the Pappa Smurf he rode along for about 1000 miles on day one of the Rally. He had to stay at home with the cats for day two as he took up most of the trunk. (Thursday) Jersey Lilly Saloon. Judge Roy Bean's court. Langtry - Day 1 Us with Big Bird in front of the Haunted Maker Hotel in Mineral Springs. We passed on this location during the rally and decided to drive by it on the way home on Sunday 7

Shade Tree Mechanic. Your Clutch By: Howard Halasz (Nov 2012) All Gold Wings have a wet multi-plate clutch. This means that the clutch is constantly bathed in motor oil while you ride. A scavenge pump picks oil up from the bottom of the clutch housing and squirts the oil into the crankcase to prevent the clutch from drowning in motor oil. We need to be very careful about what kind of oil additives you put in your motor oil. American Honda doesn't recommend the use of any additives. The wrong kind of additive, such as "SLICK 50" for cars and trucks, can cause serious damage to a wet multi-plate clutch like the one in your Gold Wing. Your clutch "basket" is mechanically linked to your engine. Your clutch center is mechanically linked to your transmission. A series of splined friction discs and splined plates are alternately spaced in the basket with a special damper plate in the middle of the assembly. A wafer spring (1984 and later Gold Wings) or a series of coil springs ( Gold Wings) is used to squeeze the plates and discs together very tightly. The Gold Wings use a cable operated clutch. The 1984 and newer Wings use a hydraulically operated clutch with a master cylinder on the handlebar and a slave cylinder on the clutch cover. Damper plates consist of two steel plates with flat damper springs sandwiched between the steel plates. The assembly is held together with small brass rivets. Damper plate failure usually causes difficult shifting, clutch drag, and inability to shift into neutral while the engine is running. Jackrabbit starts, popping the clutch, stop-and-go riding in very hot weather, improper clutch adjustment ( models), and air in the hydraulic system (1984 and later) can lead to damper plate failure. If you suspect that you are having any mechanical problems with your clutch, have your authorized Honda technician check it out as soon as possible because the problem can cause serious and costly engine damage. Repairs to the clutch assembly can run into a bill of several hundred dollars up to $1,000. If you are having problems with the clutch on your wing do not let it go too long. The longer you wait to correct the issue the more it could cost you to get it fixed. 9 WING NUT AWARD At October's gathering we had two nominees for the prestigious Wing Nut award. And they were both worthy and if there was a way to have two winners these two individuals would qualify, but alas there was one winner. Tom Sprague nominated himself because he knew he would be nominated. Tom always takes group pictures to document the town rides. As usual he set his camera on his bike, but his bike was going down hill and his bike rolled down hill. He thought that if he put his bike in gear it would stay in place, but it did not. Dave Sterbing nominated our newsletter editor, Sheri Altes. Dave wrote an article for the news letter and inserted his GWRRA number three times so he could win a free meal at IHOP, and Sheri did not catch this. As I said this was close and we had to vote a second time and the winner was Tom. The Couple of the Year Lyle & Sheri Altes Well still have not done much riding. I think we may have to get Lyle in for a fix and repair. We have read all the travels our friends have been making and sure to miss spending the time with you. I do believe things may slow down some for me, open enrollment for the City of Austin will be coming to a close Nov 18th.

CHRISTINA S CRAZY COMMENTS By Christina Vidrine I have come to the conclusion there is always something to do in Wichita Falls. There are some beautiful homes that have been in this fine city since the early 1900 s. One of those homes is the Kell House. Long considered a visionary and driving force behind the growth of our city, Frank Kell moved to Wichita Falls in 1896 at the urging of his brother-in-law, Joseph Kemp. The two men were involved in the grain industry, the development of Lake Wichita, the utilities companies, the newspaper, the streetcar system, the railroad, the local college, and much more. In 1909, Mr. Kell purchased the land on the bluff overlooking downtown and, with his sister-in-law Mrs. Minnie Mae Addickes serving as contractor; he built a home for his family. Kell House Museum is waiving our admission charge. However, we do encourage visitors to consider donating to the stabilization project. The Kell house is located at the corner of Bluff and 9th streets less than a mile from the convention center (south on Austin St and right on 9th St for 2 blocks) The Kell Family 1910 The Kell family home was occupied by Miss Willie May Kell after the death of her parents. When Miss Kell passed away in 1980, the Kell House was purchased and restored by the Wichita County Heritage Society, and the Kell House Museum opened in The Kell House is one of the most historically and architecturally significant buildings in Wichita Falls. The Museum features distinctive architecture designed by the local firm of Jones and Orlopp, original family furnishings, textiles, decorative arts, and historic costumes. Guided tours of this local, state, and national landmark provide a fascinating history of this area s early settlement and of the Kell family. The Kell Home Due to ongoing restoration, the Museum may have to close with little notice. Please call them ahead of time to make sure they are open (940) The Kell House Museum is open to the public: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 2 to 4 p.m. During our restoration process, the A man in Phoenix calls his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving and says, "I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mother and I are divorcing; forty-five years of misery is enough. "Pop, what are you talking about?" the son screams. We can't stand the sight of each other any longer," the father says. "We're sick of each other, and I'm sick of talking about this, so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her." Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. "Like heck they're getting divorced," she shouts, "I'll take care of this," She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, "You are NOT getting divorced. Don't do a single thing until I get there. I'm calling my brother back, and we'll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don't do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?" and hangs up. The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. "Okay," he says, "they're coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way." 10
