1 REBELS AUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER MARCH 2015 President s Message Happy March Rebels!! It seems like I just was wishing you all a happy February. With March here the closer we are to car season and nicer weather. We had a good time at the VFW. The Swap meet is next week, hopefully we ll have nice weather (at least above 20 degrees)! We are still looking for a handful of people for the second shift. Our first meeting for the car show is March 15 th. I can t believe it s that time again. Before you know it, It will be here. Please consider helping out, it s a great time to be around friends and fellow hot rodders. Thank you Craig Foster for all your hard work and dedication for the car show! You won t want to miss the next meeting! We have a special guest who will give us some history of the Rebels. Her name is Ann Anderson. Her late husband Kenneth (Andy) Anderson was president in the late 50s early 60s and Ann served as secretary to the Rebels as well as secretary to the Lincoln Timing Association. She has memorabilia from the Rebels as well as some other clubs and will be doing a slide show. As far as Tour Nebraska, we have 6 volunteers. If anyone would like to help out, please contact me. Thanks to Jim McNeil and Craig Foster for getting the flier ready to pass out at the swap meet. Thank you Jim for getting the coats ready to go and finding a recovery vehicle for Tour Nebraska. 2 February 2015 Minutes The meeting was held at the VFW Club on February 25, There were 38 members and guests in attendance. The meeting was called to order by President Mike Brown at 7:30 pm. Mike asked if there were any new members or guests and there were none. Mike turned the meeting over to Sandy Francisco for the Vice President s report. Sandy said the March board meeting will be on March 10 th at 7 pm at Dino s. The March general meeting will be March 25 th at Lee s Chicken. Sandy also reported that car show coordinator Craig Foster has called a car show meeting for March 15 th, 4 pm at The Eatery. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Vice President s report. The Secretary s report was given by Margaret Otley. Margaret asked if all members had received their newsletter and if there were any additions or corrections. There were none. She said that ladies night would be March 18 th at 6pm. Ladies are meeting at Beacon Hill this month. Margaret said the newsletter deadline was Monday March 2 nd. Please get all articles, pictures, etc to Tracee by that date. Membership cards are ready, see Lydell or Margaret to pick yours up. Margaret read a thank you letter from Lincoln City Church for the donation to their youth mission trip. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the January minutes and the Secretary s report. The Treasurer s report was given by Jana Wood. Jana said that income for the month came from membership dues, a check for cone races at I 80 racetrack and newsletter advertising. Expenses included the holiday party, student and teacher meals at the January meeting, a reservation fee for Pioneers Park for the car show and payment for the Rebel s booth at the upcoming swap meet. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Treasurer s report. Gary Weyers gave the Coordinator s report. Gary said that there were only 2 Rebel members who were taking cars to the World of Wheels, Rod Phelps and Johnny Nunn. Gary said that 5 volunteers are still needed for the second shift at the swap meet. Second shift is 6 am til done. Gary said the annual Berean Car Show for 2015 would be May 16 th. Gary has entry forms. A motion was made, seconded and approved to accept the Coordinator s report. New Business: Jim Holstein talked about the Gary Kuck museum tour which will be on April 18 th. The cost is $25 per person. Or for a private tour led by Gary Kuck the cost is $100. All proceeds go to Heartland Cancer Foundation which is a local organization helping cancer patients and their families with costs not covered by insurance. Jim has some tickets and brochures. See Jim for more information. Tour Nebraska. The Rebels have been approached to be the host club for this year s Tour Nebraska. This would involve a support truck and trailer for the tour, help with registration on Friday evening May 9th at the North 27 th Culver s and tour check point volunteers. This would involve 6-8 volunteers. Craig Foster suggested putting the information in the newsletter to see how much interest there was. Tom Dingwell will at the March meeting have a presentation of Rebel s memorabilia and a slide presentation. Old Business: Jim McNeil said that coats will be in tomorrow but he does have some of the fleece with him tonight. There was a delay in the shipment of the jackets due to the weather in the south. Tonight s trivia by Craig Foster was on Cadillac The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm. Let the counter person know you are a Rebels member. ` We are pleased to announce that for 2015 the Paul Brown Memorial Rally has arranged a tour of the Gary Kuck Car Museum in Lincoln, NE.on April 18th. This is a private collection of awesome cars that some have called the best collection of cars between Chicago and Denver. It is not open to the public, but Gary and his wife Susan do open it for local area charities on occasion. We will assist the Heartland Cancer Foundation based in Lincoln to host this event. The eclectic Kuck collection includes cars from the teens forward. You will see names like Stutz- Bearcat,Auburn,Deusenberg,Cord,and classics from the 30'sto 70s to name just a few. The cost of the tour is $25 per person with all monies going to the Heartland Cancer Foundation. There will be more information forthcoming so tell your friends and mark your calendars! Car Show Meeting Sunday, March 15 Eatery Time 4:00pm Craig Foster has been working hard getting things started for our 2015 show. Join us for updates and information from our car show coordinator Craig Foster. Your participation and input is very important to help make our show a success. Stay after the meeting for dinner and conversation with fellow Rebels. Proud to be a Rebel, Sandy TOUR NEBRASKA 2015 IS SATURDAY JUNE 6TH AND SUNDAY JUNE 7TH AND THE HOME BASE IS LINCOLN NEBRASKA THIS YEAR!! It is a " members only" event but you can join NRCA as a step in the registration process. Registration will open January 1, 2015 and closes May 15th - no entries will be accepted after then. The Rebels Auto Club supports Tour Nebraska, but especially this year when Lincoln is the home base. Club members are volunteering to help at the event and some members will also be participating. ABOUT TOUR NEBRASKA : Tour Nebraska is a unique "driving event" covering 600 miles in two days. This is not a car show, and there are no trophies - we believe everyone who participates is a winner. It always held on the first week end in June that contains any day in June. It is open to all 4 wheel vehicles - 30 years old or older. So, for 2015 we will accept vehicles 1985 and older. The event has been held for 22 years and the record for participants stands at 336 when is was ran out of Lincoln a few years back. Tour Nebraska is for NRCA members only, however, non-members are encouraged to join THE association and participate.

4 Spring is getting closer and from what I see in the forecast it is going to be getting warmer and the cars will be coming out of storage. I know I am anxious to get my car out. It looks like it s going to be a nice day for the swap meet on Sunday at the event center. There ought to be a lot of vendors selling parts. There isn t much else going on in March but I am working on a new event with Don & Millies on 84 th and O street to start in April or May. More information coming soon. 6 by Jim Jensen At Large Board Member THIS MONTH WE HIGHLIGHT OUR REBELS MEMBERS GENE AND NANCY PHILLIPS IN THE FALL OF 1996 NANCY AND I WENT OUT TO LOS AN- GLES, CALIFORNIA TO VISIT MY BROTHER. WE WERE PLAN- NING TO GO TO THE NATIONAL HOT ROD ASSOCIATION DRAG RACES (NHRA) WHICH WERE BEING HELD IN POMONA, CALI- FORNIA. WHILE IN CALIFORNIA WE NOTICED AN AD FOR SALE OF A 1934 CHEVY CANOPY EXPRESS. WE HAD NO IDEA WHAT THIS WAS. THE NEXT DAY WE LEFT EARLY TO LOOK AT THE EXPRESS. THIS WAS PRIOR TO THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT. AS THE PICTURE SHOWS IT WAS VERY DIFFERENT IN STYLE AND KIND OF ROUGH. WE DID NOTHING OTHER THAN LOOK AT IT TO GET AN IDEA WHAT THIS WAS AND ALSO A COST. AF- SOME DETAILS ON THE CANOPY EX- PRESS: THE ENGINE 350 CI Chevy BLOWER Mooneyham KIND OF WHEELS Wire wheels DISC BRAKES ALL 4 REGISTERED AS HISTORIC PAINTED by Perry Seivert in Bradshaw, Ne Prowler Yellow TER A MONTH AT HOME I DECIDED TO CALL MY BROTHER TO DISCUSS THE EXPRESS. THIS VEHICLE I FOUND OUT WAS VERY RARE. MY BROTHER SAID HE WOULD STORE THE CAR IF BOUGHT FOR A TIME TELL I COULD GET IT HOME. AT THIS POINT THE EXPRESS WAS STILL FOR SALE. MY BROTHER SAID IF WE BOUGHT IT HE WOULD STORE IT TELL MARCH OF THE FOLLOWING YEAR WHEN WE WERE COMING OUT TO SEE THE WINTER NATIONAL DRAGS. WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND BROUGHT IT HOME. SINCE THE WOOD FRAME WAS SOMEWHAT ROTTEN AND FALLING OUT GETTING IT HOME WAS AN ISSUE. ON THE TRIP HOME WE STOPPED MANY TIMES FOR DUCK TAPE, BUNGEE CORDS AND CLAMPS TO HOLD IT TOGETHER. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS MY NEIGHBORS ASKED WAS, WHAT YOU GOING TO DO WITH THE JUNK TRUCK. THIS WAS THE REMARK I NEEDED TO GET THIS RESTORATION COMPLETED. WORKING ON THE EXPRESS TOOK MANY YEARS TO COMPLETE. MANY PARTS HAD TO BE LOCATED AND MANY PARTS WERE RECREATED ONLY FROM PIC- TURES OF ORINGINAL CANOPY EXPRESS. FINDING PARTS AND COMPLETING IT TOOK OVER 10 YEARS. SINCE THE RESTORATION WE DRIVE TO MANY CAR SHOWS AND HAVE A BALL WITH OUR TOY TRUCK.
