Save the dates of August 13 th 15 th for our trek back to Overgaard for another fun filled weekend at Bison Ranch 140 miles northeast of Phoenix. We had a great time last year. The details are being worked on and will be in the next issue of the StarDust and on our website as soon as available. If you have any questions or suggestions call and remember to bring your sweater, its cool in the evenings. Jim Boyle Escape From the Heat The courtyard at Bison Ranch Bob Yoder's new car, he will be bringing it along.
2 May 2010 The StarDust Page 2 President s Message: I was just wondering, Desert Stars members Ron and Rhonda Borino have gone beyond the call of duty putting together a trio of casual Star Night dinners across the valley. No judging, no showing of cars and no competition. Even though they have been well received and attended, they have fallen short in one of their main objectives. To introduce new members to the Club and attract other members, that would not otherwise attend a competitive event. All that being said, you have another chance to redeem yourself and attend our next Star Night. Take a look at Ron s Star Night article on this page; give him a call and I ll see you there! On Sunday June 13 th the Desert Stars will hold our Annual Business meeting, where we elect Officers and Directors. We are very fortunate to have such a great group of people willing to spend their time insuring our Club continues to grow and prosper. This is a casual dinner and it would be a great opportunity for you to meet the people working hard to make our section one of the best sections in the MBCA. On the front page, you will find a slate candidates that will be presented to the Membership to be voted upon. Also I would like to thank, in advance, our outgoing Directors for all of their hard work, and welcome the incoming Directors. Between trying to get my pool ready for summer and weeding out the garden, Dee and I took a drive out to Boyce Thompson Arboretum to see the wild flowers. The desert is truly exploding with flowers! You don t want to miss out on this beautiful short drive toward Globe because soon the flowers will be gone and the weather too hot. So just get in your Mercedes and drive. You won t be disappointed. Hope to see you at an event soon, Bud Cloninger, President Desert Stars Section Star Night Join members Ron and Rhonda Borino for dinner during this new monthly club event. It's primarily designed to introduce new members to the club and to meet current members during a casual evening of food, drink and conversation. These events are no host gathering where we can discuss past and future club events as well as any other topic of interest. Due to seating arrangements these events are limited and members must RSVP to Ron Borino at , by the dates listed for each event. Do you have a favorite restaurant suggestion? If so feel free to your idea to Ron at rlborino@hotmail.com. Perhaps we can use your idea in an upcoming event. Restaurant must be able to accommodate at least 20 people preferably in a separate space and if possible be a locally owned facility, resort, hotel, etc. We want to try great places all over the valley. 3 Mercedes - a Spanish girls name meaning grace. How appropriate. Certainly I could apply that name to a Mercedes-Benz and the outstanding automobiles that they have produced over the last 100 years. I could definitely add a few more of my own, why not add your own names and join the Desert Stars for a once in a lifetime trip to Germany and visit these special places associated with this great marque. Stuttgart, Unterturkhiem, Sindelfingen, Felbach, Affalterbach, Bad Connstatt, see the famous Mercedes-Benz museum, fabulous! See Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach's workshop. The Karl Benz house and museum, the classic center in Felbach. The motorcars there will take your breath away, especially the, how did my friend Wolfram Koerner say, the holy of holies room, unbelievable! Right out of history before your eyes. Spend a day at the AMG facility and engine plant in Affalterbach. If you have an AMG vehicle meet the technician who made your engine, and signed it and have your photo taken. Check out the Star magazine for all the particulars and costs as well as past issues for articles on other trips. Usually the trips are in July and Sept. remember to think of add on trips, Frankfurt, Munich, Remember the lesser marques, Audi, Porsche, VW, BMW, also have facilities in Germany and don t forget my favorites the Ring Nurburgring, Oktoberfest, Baden-Baden, I could go on and on, plenty of things to see and do for everyone. I hope I have whetted your appetite for a Desert Stars trip in Think it over and if you are interested in such a Desert Stars trip or have any questions or suggestions let me know at (401) or rschulte@desertstars.org. 4 September May The StarDust Page 4 A Great Mix Lunch and Putting at Desert Highlands On March 27 th your Desert Stars went putting at Desert Highlands Golf Course. The professional 18 hole putting greens were quite a challenge. Our President, Bud Cloninger and myself blistered the course setting new records for holes in fours, fives and sixes. It is rumored that NCAA basketball was interrupted to capture this once in a lifetime golf highlight. Maybe rumor is not the correct word, hallucination is more correct. All 28 of us enjoyed the stellar views, a great walk and a delicious lunch with outstanding service. As a bonus, members were able to drive golf carts, and we had some first time electric drivers. Our very own director Don Burton led the field with low score and Doris Lee was most honest. Janet Bale and Ak Eberlein had holes in one. Many thanks to Bob Ace Manderville for sponsoring the event Jim Boyle

7 May 2010 The StarDust Page 7 Well, the B.E.A.T. (British European Auto Tour) is over for another year. The weekend of January 17 th and 18 th started with great weather and good group and a leaking 500SL. Bob Yoder had to go home and exchange the car for another must be nice to have that many SL s. Again, the weather could not have been better and the stops in Wickenburg and Prescott went off without a hitch. Next year I believe we will have a longer stay in Prescott (to spend more money). Jerome was its usual crowded weekend self and we were off to Dead Horse State Park for photos and pit stop for water. Off toward Flagstaff with most taking the 89A route through Sedona and Oak Creek. B.E.A.T We could still see a bit of snow on the North side of the mountains and a BMW Z8 that had run out of gas just past Garlands in the canyon (wonder who owns that?). And there was still snow on the ground in Flagstaff even though it was shirt sleeve weather. Sunday was good with breakfast and awards. The Desert Stars' provided two $50 Visa gift certificates for the breakfast raffle. Next year should be a great run and hope all sign up early for a great chance to get those cars out of the garage and on the road. Michael Broadston For Sale or trade for SL SL with 49,500 miles Please contact David Shapiro or davidshaps@cox.net

9 May 2010 The StarDust Page 9 This issues Mercedes and Friend is David Shapiro s SL. This Dark Olive (291) with Cognac Leather (250) Pagoda is just about as good as they get. With only 49,500 miles on this classic and eleven years of ownership he has attended to everything needed to make this Mercedes look and perform as new from the factory. It is equipped with European headlights, right side mirror, hard top accessory rails and the original working radio & clock. The goal when any repairs were made was in keeping with the originality and authenticity of the car. David owned a previous 280SL in red, but after a short time realized red was not the color he wanted. Rather than repaint the car another color that wasn t original, he sold it and bought one the color he wanted. Now that s perfection! David readily admits that his over thirteen years as a Desert Star and MBCA member has helped him in his quest for the perfect Pagoda. Kind of makes you want to go out and rent the movie Two For The Road with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, both the car and the movie are classics. Bud Cloninger Featured Mercedes and Friend
