We are always making changes, updating events, adding and deleting information. If there is something you would like to get added, please let us know. Our activities can be only as good as the members make them. Also at our planning meeting, Todd and Deb Hampson were crowned as Chapter K s 2019 Couple of the Year. The crowning was to have taken place at our Christmas party in November, but they were unable to attend. Congratulations Todd and Deb. This would be a good opportunity to also congratulate John & Glenda, who have just recently been named by the District Directors as Couple Of The Year Coordinators for PA District. It has been a long time since we have had weather like this on the first day of a new year mid 50 s and only a little breezy. It came just in time for the chapter s annual New Year s Day Ride for Pork and Sauerkraut. Many of the chapter members met at the Sheetz in Dillsburg for Rich and Wendy to lead us to the Greenmount Fire Hall outside of Gettysburg. Other members met us there. The ride down was beautiful. There was plenty of food, room to sit, and it was well organized. Great job Greenmount VFD. Afterwards Rick and Vicki led us on a great ride through the orchards leading back into Carlisle and Dillsburg. Gary & Judy CD 2

GLENDA & VICKI S FUNNY CORNER One day refrigerators will get us back. They ll come in bedrooms at 3 a.m., turn on the light, open their doors, look at you for a while and then turn around and go back to the kitchen. My husband and I are very competitive and we often joke about it. But I joke more. If people realized the brain was an app, maybe they d start using it more. Two attorneys were in a café and they ordered drinks while pulling their sandwiches from their cases. The waitress said, you can t eat your own sandwiches in here, so they promptly traded them. Some congratulations are in order: --To Tom White, 2018 High Mileage Award with 16, To John Leib and John Crosson, for 2 nd and 3 rd Place High Mileage Awards. --To Todd and Deb Hampson for accepting Chapter K s Couple of the Year for To John and Glenda Leib for accepting the District Couple of the Year Coordinators. SHIRTS, PATCHES OR PINS: If you are interested in ordering any Chapter K apparel, patches or pins, please contact Kitty Schardt at zumaqueen70@me.com. 11

John and Glenda Leib wrote a great article about their trip to Alaska. It is in 4 parts, of which, below is part 2. Watch the next 2 newsletters for the rest of their article. Our Alaskan Trip By John & Glenda Leib On day 7, we finally made it to Glacier National Park. Since we had a fairly short day of riding we decided to ride to Glacier and do some sightseeing. Let me tell you I was glad I did not have my 450 because of the wind. John and Ken would be picking me up out of the ditch! The wind was so strong that it was hard to keep the Wing on the road. Even the windsocks were standing straight out. The next day we took the same route but the winds had calmed down. Glacier is a beautiful place to visit with lots of roads to explore, hiking, waterfalls, and SNOW. Yes, actual snow that you can stand on, make snow angels or a snowball fight. I have a picture of John and I standing on the snow and of course, I had on several layers of clothes and a winter coat along with a sweatshirt, fleece jacket, and two more layers. Who would have believed it was July? That evening we stayed at the Red Eagle s Motel & Cabins in St. Mary, MT just outside Glacier. We rode up a steep grade, made a sharp right turn and up another grade to a gravel parking lot where the office was located. We checked in and I told the guys that I would walk down to the room. I unlocked the door and saw a pair of sneakers. Oh well, someone forgot their sneakers so I walked in a little further and found people sleeping in the beds! Hold on boys, we need another room, so up to the office I go and explained what I saw. This time she gave us a key to the cabin across the road. So down the gravel road, sharp left turn, down the steep grade and across the road. There were three cabins and we were the last one but what a nice cabin it was. We asked about a place to eat and were told to check out the Cattle Baron Restaurant which was nice but a little expensive. After a short ride in the morning on Day 9 we made it to the Canadian border. Talk about unfriendly people. Hope we don t come across too many like those who work the Canadian border. We stopped at the Duty-Free Station to get ice and get a picture of John and the bike at the Welcome to Alberta sign. We rode through the Canadian Rockies which were more impressive than Glacier. The glaciers in several places were several feet thick. We stayed at a very expensive place in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Boy could I get spoiled in a hurry. We were able to park the bikes in a covered garage for the night. The following day we drove thru Banff National Park and Lake Louise which was very busy and no parking but did see elk on the edge of town and more of the Canadian Rockies. Finally saw our first wildlife, a brown bear that was down over the edge of the bank eating. We would have missed him if we had not seen several vehicles parked along the side of the road and people looking down the bank. Then it was off to Jasper and Dawson City. We missed the road that lead to Dawson City and drove out of our way miles. Finally stopped for directions and had to drive back miles. Too late to make it to Dawson City so spent the night in Rycoft, Alberta. It had rained during the night and everywhere there was mud. Those log trucks did not care. By the time we got to Dawson City the bikes were covered in mud and John could not see out of the windshield (as you can see from the 12

picture). After gathering information at the Visitor Center, getting something to eat at a small café and doing other sight-seeing, the boys asked for a hose and tried to do a temporary cleaning job on the bikes. We picked up the Alaskan Highway at Dawson Creek and made it to Ft. Nelson, British Columbia before stopping for the night. As we were traveling the Alaskan Highway, I was very glad we stopped at the Visitor s Center in Dawson Creek. The young girl was very helpful with information and gave us a brochure that listed where lodging was, gas (although not always open or permanently closed), food, etc., in addition to mileage both in km and American terms. Yes, there was a lot of construction on the Alcan Highway which was no surprise. One thing that did surprise us was that we did not see herds of buffalo. Usually if we saw a buffalo, he/she was alone. We made it from Dawson Creek to Teslin, Yukon where we stayed for the evening. This stop had everything we needed, i.e., gas, restaurant, lodging, and small store. The thing they DID NOT have was hot water which we did not know until after we checked in and went to get a shower. The excuse was they were busy in the restaurant and needed the hot water to wash the dishes. We still DID NOT have hot water the next morning. (continued in the February issue) 13

FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Hi Everyone: It s hard to imagine that 2018 is almost gone and 2019 is fast approaching. Christmas is only a couple weeks away and New Years is one week behind. Evelyn and I hope that all of you are prepared for all the activities associated with the holidays and have prepared yourself for the addition of several pounds. As we enter 2019 you should be going on line and checking your individual training status to see what classes you need to take in order to stay current in the levels program. With the arrival of 2019 means another GREAT YEAR of riding, attending GWRRA functions and visiting with our GWRRA friends. The majority of us have already put our bikes/trikes away for a long winters nap, but there may be a few who continue to ride through the winter. Not everyone has the luxury of heated grips, heated seats and heated clothing. Keep in mind when you are out there riding to watch for the following: anti-skid, slippery spots on the roads, pot holes and white/yellow lines which become slippery when wet. Take a break and stop to warm yourself. Keep in mind that cold hands and feet do not react well. If you are out riding and your fingers become numb, put latex gloves over your liners, and then put your regular gloves on over the latex gloves. It s amazing how effective this simple idea can be. The winter months will also provide a great opportunity to have a Training Day. These are always fun to have during the cold winter months and it only takes a couple of hours. Again in 2019, we encourage everyone to get involved in the Rider Education program to improve your riding skills and knowledge so that you and your passenger enjoy the ride and return home safely. Evelyn and I have enjoyed the last year as PA District Educators and would like thank all of you for all your help and support. In addition, we would like to wish you and yours a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Ride Safe & Ride Proud Chuck & Evelyn Stone 16
