Well the weather is still not cooperating with us but we were able to get a few rides and events in for July. We went to East Coast Exotic Animal Rescue and had a good time though I didn't think we were ever going to get Jo away from the monkeys or the lion. We also went to York Street Treat for Ice Cream and had a good turnout for it. All Chapters East was well attended and I had a good time visiting with old friends and even met a few new ones. The weather did stay nice on Saturday and they had a good turnout for the rides. There are still plenty of upcoming rides and events so please sign up early. Also don't forget to sign up for the picnic and sign up for what side dish you are bringing. Jo and I are getting excited about Wing Ding as this will be the first one she had ever been to and being in that area there are plenty of mountain twisty roads for us to explore. Hope everyone that is going has a wonderful time and a safe trip there and back. 2 ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR Larry Staines Mother Nature has been really fickle this year. We had a spell where it was so dry the grass was turning brown. Now we've had so much rain I have to mow every 4 days. We have still been able to get some rides in. Brenda led a ride to East Coast Animal Rescue. We had several campers spend the weekend at All Chapters East in Lancaster. There was also a handful of members ride in for the day on Saturday. The weather was nice for a couple of ice cream rides. One was in Hanover at York Street Treat and then to Perrydel. Also coming up is Mr. G's, Summers, a Sunday ride and Dairy Queen. (These are not helping me lose weight.) Wing Ding is coming up at the end of the month. I know there are a number of chapter members attending. I hope everyone has a good time and ride safe. See you at the gathering. 6 NEWPORT NEWS ADVENTURE Thursday, 19 July. My local friend and I geared up early for a ride to Newport News, Va. Prior arrangements had been made to meet two of my rider friends from Asheville, NC in Newport News. My friend and I had decided to make the trip a slow go ride and try to avoid the DC area traffic. We left York and rode across Rt. 30 to 741 at Millersville. We went south from there to Rt. 272, to Rt. 40 in MD. While crossing Rt. 40 through Elkton we came upon an accident involving two SUV s laying on their sides... The intersection was completely blocked causing a delay. After passing through we hit Rt. 896 and followed it to Rt. 13 south through DE. Just south of Dover we came upon another accident that was blocking the highway. Another delay. After passing through it we continued on and rode across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge into VA. For some unknown reason our GPS went out and we rode inn circles through town for a while. After stopping for gas we reset the GPS and it took us to Rt. 64 and into Newport News where we located the motel. Then Ashville riders had already arrived. A late dinner, some discussion about the next day, and then to bed for some rest. We were up early Friday morning and geared up for the days activity. The motel had no coffee or breakfast, so a restaurant stop was first on the agenda. Our first stop was at the Mariner s Museum. While waiting for the history movie to start one of my Ashville friends called a rider friend that was living locally. He rode out to meet us right away. Fortunately he was very familiar with the area and became our tour guide. We spent the day visiting museums, National Parks, Civil War sites, etc... Weather was perfect. Another late dinner and then back to the motel. We rose early again on Saturday morning and quickly discovered the pouring rain. It was much too heavy to considering riding our bikes. The traffic was also extremely heavy. We debated on an alternate plan for about a half hour. We discovered there was an Enterprise Rental a block away, so we ended up renting a car. The entire day was spent touring more museums and touring the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, sites in Hampton, Yorktown, etc. The rain continued all day, but we dealt with it. That evening I contacted my grandson stationed at Langley AFB and he picked me up at the motel. We have a nice dinner and several hours visit. Got to see my two month old, 8th great grandchild. On Sunday morning it was not raining, but storms were forecasted all the way up the coast for our ride home. The NC riders left about 5:30, while me and York friend waited and debated on a route. We located Rt. 17 on the map and it looked good. We figured we could ride northwest and get behind the storms. It was 68 degrees at that time. Our ride up 17 was nice and we hit Rt. 15 to come home. With the exception of missing one turn the ride was uneventful. There was no rain and traffic was light until we hit 15. We were home just about an hour before the storm hit. My Asheville friends were not so lucky. They hit three major storms before getting home. - Submitted by Mike "Maverick" Malloy Woody - sound like someone we know? - Submitted by Shirley

7 MEMBER CONTRIBUTIONS Hello PA-V We hope everyone had a great 4th of July at our home, or with your family, I just remember it was a very HOT! day. We re thinking about doing a fall cookout, with the temperature being COOLER! We haven t been out riding too much, either been working around the house or the ones we wanted to go on got rain out. That s ok, there are more rides on the schedule we hope to be on. Let not forget to check the website for cancelled and new rides that maybe added. Just a heads up the Loxley s Restaurant Ride is Aug. 18th. I have already made reservations for 1:00, so if you are planning on going I need to know by Aug 15. So please sign up on the website. Mike & I hope everyone is enjoying the summer riding or just visiting friends and family. With all the rain and flooding in the pasted couple week we hope your home was safe or you didn t have to much water. At Prince Kitchens we didn t luck out, the creek came up over the banks overnight. The basement had a foot of water, the day was spent pumping out and cleaning up the mud, and our dumpster moved to the next bridge. Heading to work was so amazing, streets flooded, houses pumping water from basements. Some streets are still closed because of making sure the bridges are safe to drive over. Generation X is only buying a few, and the next generation isn't buying any at all. A recent study was done to find out why. Here are the reasons why Millennials don't ride motorcycles: 1. Pants won't pull up far enough for them to straddle the seat. 2. Can't get their phone to their ear with a helmet on. 3. Can't use 2 hands to eat while driving. 4. They don't get a trophy and a recognition plaque just for buying one. 5. Don't have enough muscle to hold the bike up when stopped. 6. Might have a bug hit them in the face and then they would need emergency care. 7. Motorcycles don't have air conditioning. 8. They can't afford one because they spent 12 years in college trying to get educated. 9. They are allergic to fresh air. 10. Their pajamas get caught on the exhaust pipes. 11. They might get their hands dirty checking the oil. 12. The handle bars have buttons and levers and cannot be controlled by touch-screen. 13. You have to shift manually and use something called a clutch. 14. It's too hard to take selfies while riding. 15. They don't come with training wheels like their bicycles did. 16. Motorcycles don't have power steering or power brakes. 17. Their nose ring interferes with the face shield. 18. They would have to use leg muscle to back up. 19. When they stop, a light breeze might blow exhaust in their face. 20. It could rain on them and expose them to non-soft water. 21. It might scare their therapy dog, and then the dog would need therapy. 22. Can't find black flip-flops. 23. After riding they smell like a man (OMG)! Man is still the fastest and most efficient computer that can be mass produced with unskilled labor. - Submitted by Mike "Maverick" Malloy

9 DISTRICT DIRECTOR Last month we were wondering; where is summer? Well, we have had very hot weather and now many of us are getting more rain than the ground can handle. I hope everyone is safe and has been able to enjoy a ride between the rain drops. Chapters please be careful about cancelling rides. I know sometimes the weather forecast is 80% chance of rain or it is to be 89 degrees with 91% humidity and we need to think of our membership and do what is safe. But, sometimes we need to consider going on 4-wheels when possible due to bad weather conditions. Many times when a chapter starts cancelling too many events then membership will find non-gwrra functions to fill their calendar and get out of the habit of attending Chapter events. The Chapter will notice a decline in participation and the Chapter will need to reach out to their membership and encourage them to participate with the Chapter. Talk about an event that many people were concerned about due to the weather, All Chapters East was this weekend and we just walked into our home from attending. The weather was great. Our host was PA-B and we thank you for a weekend that was filled with a great ride, good food and FUN! Most of the chapters in PA were in attendance; thank you for participating. I am amazed and proud of PA District; it is great to see how many people have signed up to attend Wing Ding 40. Thank you to the volunteers that have signed up to sell tickets on Wednesday, August 29 th and thank you to the volunteers that are helping other Districts fill time slots. Hopefully, you have been reading your Wing World magazine and looking at the Wing Ding website to see all the rides, events, classes and vendors and take some time to participate. There have been additions to the PA District events calendar. Have you taken a look? Pies, Pies, Pies the District is having a ride-in to Dean s Diner in Blairsville, PA on Saturday, September 8th at 2 pm for pie. The pies are homemade and they make 25 different kinds daily. So, please plan on riding to Blairsville and join us for pie. We will be there early to have lunch and enjoy a piece of pie with you. There are no reservations necessary however, if you or your chapter plan on attending, please let us know. Then we can give the diner an idea as to how many will be participating. The District Team had their first planning for the 2019 PA District Rally, Ride of the Roses in York, PA on May 16-18, The Wyndham Garden York is taking reservations by calling press 0 for reservations in York and use code GWRRA. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the rally please let us know. Thank you for updating the events calendar on the district website. We knew there were events happening in the district that other chapters were unaware. Please keep it up and post your chapter events to the website. This is the best way to let everyone know what is happening in your chapter and getting people to come and join in the FUN! Remember to always ride safe! Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors * * From the District Director * * July 18, The entire District Team, current and past, THANK Doug and Cyndy Motter for the years they have served on the District Team as District Educator. Chuck Stone has accepted the position of District Educator. We welcome Chuck and Evelyn Stone in their new endeavor as District Educator. -- Harold and Diane Jackson ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTOR Hello Everyone Summer is definitely here, hot & humid, but on this day as we write the newsletters article its 82 degrees and cool. What a beautiful day. We re 6 months into the years and we hope everyone is out having FUN, going to Events, Ice Cream, Meet & Eat rides. And whether you are on 2, 3 or 4 wheels or you call a friend and say I would like to go, can you pick me up. It s YES, GWRRA is your family and we will always see that you get to an event that you would like to attend. Because that is who we are! We visited Chapter PA-A and were talking with a member that hasn t been to a gathering for a while (I think because of health issues) and not able to drive. Carl (another member) said right away I can pick him up and bring him to the next one. L This is the GWRRA FAMILY, they are always there ready to lend a hand or help-out a fellow member. This was definitely the case at ALL CHAPTERS EAST (Hosted by Chapter B. As we walked around and watched fellow members helping in any way they could. From leading Rides, getting a plate of food for someone, or serving up some ice cream (YUM), this is one of the true core values of GWRRA. Now yes, we love to ride our motor cycles and that is what brought us together. But it is our love and friendship for each other that keeps us together in GWRRA. Friends for FUN, Safety and Knowledge We would like to extend A BIG THANK YOU to Jim &

10 Path Burr and the entire PA-B Chapter for putting on a Wonder FUN-FUN-FUN weekend at ALL Chapters East. If you and your chapter would like this honor next year contact us or Harold & Diane, and we will be happy to give you what you need. Chapters visiting other Chapters is lots of FUN! I don t ever remember going to a Chapter gathering, event, or doing one of their rides that we didn t have a FUN time. So, plan to visit another chapter today and get in on the FUN. I know we stress FUN, but this is what GW is all about. Wing Ding 40 is getting closer Aug. 28-Sept.1 st Knoxville, Tn. we hope you have made plans to attend. Keep Calm! We know there will be so much to see and do there. Maybe some more lights, bling, new chrome (all for safety purposes of course) and lots more. We are excited to be going, the riding, whether it s a guided tour or you adventure out on your own, it will be a journey you will Love. Be Safe! Hope to see you there. As always Ride safe, Mike & Shirley Prince, PA. Asst. Directors (717) mikep@gwrrapav.org PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Hi Folks: Summer is quickly coming to an end now and fall will soon be upon us, and the leaves will soon be starting to change color in our area. This brings with it both beauty and an added element of danger for the late season rider. We have all heard the standard warnings of WET LEAVES affecting traction. What appears to be missing is a recommendation on what to do if you encounter this situation. The second thing we will encounter this time of the year is RAIN. Haul out the raingear you ve stowed in a handy spot. Make sure your rain gloves and rain boots fit properly. Poorly fitted ones can lessen your ability to brake and shift. Be most cautious when it first starts to rain. That is when the water goes into all the dim-ples in the road, and the oil residue from passing vehicles floats to the top. That gets slip-pery! A wise motorcyclist will stop for a cup of coffee when it starts to rain; who knows, it could be all over in 15 minutes, and you won t even have to put on the rain suit. After a while the oil will be washed off to the side of the road. However, traction on a wet surface may not be as good as on a dry road. Be careful. The third thing we will encounter this time of the year is FOG. Cool mornings and evenings, after a warm day, tend to produce fog in what is referred to as low-lying areas. If you think you may have a chance of riding into a fog area, carry a small towel or soft water absorbing cloth in your Jacket pocket where it is easy to get to. You may have to clean your windshield to see well. Slow down and if you think you are traveling too slowly, run your hazard flashers. I have found that the lower running lights are a big plus for driving in fog. In any of the above low traction situations, (sand, black ice, wet pavement, slippery leaves, etc.) the best advice is avoidance. Barring that, use a method of identification, prediction, and reaction to prepare for and successfully overcome obstacles such as those mentioned above. As your Chapter takes its last scheduled rides of the season, let us all think SAFETY, keeping the situations mentioned above in mind, and ending our riding season on a safe note. Ride Safe and Ride Proud. Chuck & Evelyn Stone PA DISTRICT EDUCATORS DISTRICT COY COORDINATORS: Many from PA will be attending Wing Ding in Knoxville TN. NE Region B Couple Dan & Mary Costello will be there in the Selection for International Couple of the Year. This is the final year for Region Couples.
