It feels like the summer just started and it s already October with its cooler nights and great sunny days for riding. The temperatures should be in the 40 s overnight and daytime highs in the 50 s and 60 s. But at least for this week I m really enjoying the considerably warmer than normal days and getting some early Fall riding in. I sure hope the weather stays warm and sunny for at least the next couple days while a new roof gets installed on the house and shop. Something else that happens each year about this time is the changing of hours at the local Ice Cream shops which we encountered on our October Ice Cream ride last year. When we got to the shop we discovered their hours changed that week and they were now closed Monday thru Wednesday and it was Wednesday!!! For this year s October Ice Cream ride, I went on-line to make sure we wouldn t be surprised again. No problem, The Big Chill ice cream shop still had summer hours although Pumpkin Flavors had their own reserved section in the cooler. I don t really understand why, but apparently there are some people who think Pumpkin is a real ice cream flavor. It s hard to believe but this coming week at the team meeting (Wed. the 10 th at our house) we need to finalize the details for our Holiday activities. Remember, it s only 7 more weeks till our Chapter Christmas Party (Dec 1 st ). We also need to talk about Sunday Nov 18 th another FUN day for our Chapter, Tree Fest, followed by lunch with the Chapter at a local restaurant. The theme for our Tree this yis Santa Claus is Coming to Town. We also need to decide what other Christmas activities we will be doing as a Chapter this year. While these activities are a couple weeks away don t forget my favorite ride on Sat. Oct. 13 th it will be time for the Mystery Ride. We ll know the answer to the big question next month; did I have to buy anyone lunch or not??? We ll start from the Berwick Giant Store parking lot at 10:30am. By starting this early it will allow everyone to get home in late afternoon, hours before dark. Please let me know (ASAP) if you will be joining in the FUN??? With all these things to think about, don t forget about our Gathering on Saturday (Oct 20 th ) at Tom s Kitchen. Although Summer is in the rear-view mirror there will still be plenty of good riding days left this year so let s get out there and take advantage of them. Just remember to dress for the weather, and be SAFE as we RIDE. Until next month, Enjoy the Fall, it s a beautiful time of the year! Happy Trails To You... Till We Meet Again!! 2 Hi! What a busy month we have had! Unfortunately, it was not associated with GWRRA. Chapter PA-H Directors: Gerry & Bonnie VanArt gbvanart@msn.com Phone: Asst. Directors: Bill & Charlene Knecht kncht1@msn.com Phone: Treasurer Tony Cameron mrac@ptd.net Phone: Ride Coordinator: (TBA) MEC: Renee Wasluck goldwing@ptd.net Phone: Secretary/Web Master Charlene Knecht geoflwrs@yahoo.com Phone: Newsletter Editor Bonnie VanArt gbvanart@msn.com Phone: Bill had his hip replaced earlier than we thought it would be. That made us scramble to get the house ready for him. Then therapy right away so he can get back to normal. He missed the September gathering, the fair (which did not faze him) and our ice cream ride. Our daughter flew in from Seattle to help me, of course it was fair week, she had planned to help me with Bill s recovery. Then our son came home for the last weekend of fair, bringing his dog along so that was one more obstacle to move around for Bill. Their plans were going to the Bloomsburg Fair and the Renfaire at Mt. Hope. Renee bought night show tickets for me for my birthday, so we rocked out to Eddie Money and Rick Springfield. I also had a day at the Renfaire with her. Ryan had a race at Worlds End and thought his dad could take care of the dog. Renee put a stop to that and made him take the dog to the race. It was nice to have them home but it was even nicer when they left for home and we got back to normal(?). I was tired. This time of the year our garden harvest needs to be finished, and plant mums for the fall. Bill had told the neighbor that we would mow his lawn while he was away. Yep became my job. I have forgotten how much I did when I worked, and I seemed to always have enough time. I guess the forgetting part just goes with getting older. There s never enough time now. It has been four weeks since Bill s surgery and he just had to see if he could get on the cycle. I was not here when he did that. He told me it was not too bad. I have ridden a little but not enough. It s hard to get out with the way the weather has been, hoping for some Indian summer weather to ride. I love riding in the fall with all of the colors. Everything looks sharper. So, as we sit here and not ride I have the flyers for Maryland Winterthing and PA District Rally on our desk filled out and ready to go. It s time to get back into the swing of things: more riding and enjoying our chapter activities. We hope to see everyone at our Christmas party on December 1st. 3 October 11 Renee Wasluck October 25 Shirley Smith November 14 Paul Brenner November22 Susan Hopewell November 30 Gary Elliott Sorry to say I lost my notes. But I can tell you we met at Tom s Kitchen for breakfast at 9am with the gathering to follow. We had a good turnout. Gerry led us in the Pledge of Allegiance with Bonnie giving us birthdays and anniversaries. Our thoughts go out to Jim Williams family for his passing. Please remember about the friends that cannot attend, Arden and Donna Strouse, Dee and Charlie Milbrand, and Connie Keiper who is still having trouble breathing at times also she is going to need therapy for her knees. Bill Knecht is on the upswing of healing from his hip replacement. A card or call would probably be appreciated. National News: Wing Ding next year is in Nashville, TN Renee informed us that they did such a good job that they were asked to do the same next year at Wing Ding. So they will be in charge of volunteers again. Neighboring District News: Maryland s Winterthing is Jan 3-5 in Ocean City Maryland. Looks to be interesting as the theme is Star Trek Meets Star Wars. If you are going who will you be? Susky is already to go. Star Wars for him. District News: Pa District Rally is next May in York, PA. Flyers are available on the website. Nothing yet on All Chapters East or West. Raffle tickets for the district are available ask Gerry. These help to pay for the rally. So pick up a pack they will make great Christmas stocking stuffers. Chapter News: We have quilt tickets to sell. The quilt will be raffled off at our Christmas party. Ice Cream ride will be on Oct 3. Gerry will be leading meet at Giant in Berwick at 5:30. Team meeting will be on the Oct. 10 at Gerry and Bonnie s home at 6pm. Mystery ride will be on the 13 th of October. Meet at Giant at 10:30 for a wonderful ride to have great food. If you can guess where we are going your meal is free and we all get ice cream. What could be better. Lady Riders will get together to make sure all is ready for the Tree Fest and Christmas table décor. October 24 Tom & Renee Wasluck November 27 Dale & Jean Derrick Safety is very important as the fall starts. We have fallen leaves that can be wet and it is like ice for a cycle. Also people mowing and shooting the grass onto the road it is just like the leaves. Then you have walnuts that fall on the road please try to miss them. Never enough squirrels where you need them to keep the roads clean. Next Chapter gathering is on October 20 th at Toms Kitchen at 9 for breakfast and the gathering to follow. As it was a very nice day four cycles went for a ride after the gathering. Unfortunate for me I had to go home and work. Editor s note: We took a nice ride on country roads through Mainville, and then on 339 to Max s Ice Cream Shack in Mifflinville for dessert after breakfast. Respectfully submitted, Charlene Knecht, Secretary 3

There s nothing like some good Ice Cream, unless it involves a Bike Ride through beautiful countryside on a perfect Fall day. Gerry & I met Bill & Neal and Tony at the Giant parking lot at 5:30 on Wednesday, October 3rd. The weather for our ride was all we could have asked for with lots of sunshine and temperatures in the low to mid 70 s. We took a fairly short ride, using the shade of trees along the road when we rode into the sun. Our ride ended at the Big Chill on Iron Street in Bloomsburg where we enjoyed some delicious ice cream. Thanks to Bill, Neal and Tony for joining us for a great ride. We hope you enjoyed the Ice Cream as much as we did! Bonnie I have looked into the schedules and prices for this train ride. Please read over and let me know if you will be interested in going. September: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays along with Labor Day is when the train runs. 5 IT S MYSTERY RIDE TIME AGAIN It s not too early to start thinking about my Mystery Ride. This year is going to be the 16 th annual challenge. Bonnie and I have been diligently working on it. That means we have been checking out different restaurants which is always a good thing and this year we really found some good places. I ll do my best to confuse everyone with the route, hopefully everyone will get to ride on a new road or two. As always the ride to get there will have all Good Roads and lots of nice scenery along the way and it goes without saying the food must be Excellent. But the best part of the day is the fellowship with good friends and of course the challenge to see if anyone can guess the name of the restaurant and have me pay for their lunch. In the last 15 years I have only had to buy two times and I am going to do my best to see that it doesn t happen again this year. The challenge is the same as previous years, I ll not only buy lunch for whoever can name the restaurant, before we get on the last road leading to it; I ll also buy ice cream for everyone when we make that all important Ice Cream stop on the way home, but only if someone guesses the restaurant s name. Everyone is welcome to participate in the FUN no matter if you ride on 2, 3, or 4 wheels. The CHALLENGE is on; and it s all in your hands.??will I BUY OR NOT?? THAT IS THE QUESTION The ride will leave from the Berwick Giant Store parking lot on Saturday Oct 13. The time will be based on when I can get the reservations and will be announced at that time. I need to know how many will be going so I can call for reservations. PLEASE let me know if you will be able to join in the FUN by the end of September. We ll be taking a several week hiatus checking out the restaurants while we take off for Wing Ding and a few weeks on the road, but we ll be back in time to finalize the details. Sampling all the restaurants is a grueling task but we will Endeavor to Persevere!!! Good Luck but NOT Too Much??? Gerry 5

Fall is officially here and so is the chilly weather. We rode with PA-N (our home chapter) to Erie for lunch and ice cream at Sara s on the peninsula. When we left home it was 53 degrees, it reached a high of 60; it was a beautiful ride. PA District Directors: Harold & Diane Jackson Jackson2@zoominternet.net Phone: Asst. Don t forget there are additional road hazards this time of year such as leaves, school buses and wildlife is moving around more. Stay safe and have FUN! The PA District raffle tickets have been distriubited to your chapter. Hopefully, your Chapter has dispersed the tickets to you to sell. They make good Christmas presents, stocking stuffers or tips for wait staff. They make a great thank you to a whole list of people who help and serve you such as your mail carrier, garbage collector, lawn mower or the person that removes snow. Remember for evey ticket you sell you are helping your Chapter. We are looking for two (2) chapters to step up and host All Chapters East and All Chapters West. If you need any information or if your chapter is volunteering, please give us a call. It is a great fund raiser for the chapter and the event is FUN to host. The registration form is online for the PA District Rally Ride of the Roses, May 16-18, 209 at the Wyndham Garden in York, PA. Make sure you take time to review the registration and get it in early if you plan on attending any of the special events, many of them have limited space. We already have registrations! Don t forget to book your room at the hotel. I hope you did not miss Wing Ding 40! It was a great time in Knoxville, TN with 8,090 in attendance. PA had some awards distributed to individuals in the District; pleas take some time to look at that page and see who won. Wing Ding 41 will be held in Nashville, TN at the Gaylord, August 27-31, The Gaylord is accepting reservations and can be reached at ; the room rate is $149/night and $10/day for parking. These are great rates and you need to make your reservation soon before the block of rooms is sold out. The big event on the calendar this month is Halloween. Watch for trick or treaters (they may be hard to see in their costume) as they run between cars to get to the next house for their treat. 9 Harold & Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors jackson2@zoominternet.net

Hello Fellow Goldwingers Wing Ding was GREAT FUN, but with closing ceremonies another year of GWRRA Rallies is slowly disappearing in the rearview mirror. From Knoxville, Bonnie and I turned East toward the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Cherokee, and Maggie Valley area. After a week of site seeing in the mountains it was time to pack up and head North to Natural Bridge in Virginia for another couple days of site seeing. It was then time to head home as another extended Wing Ding trip came to an end. Inspiring Leaders Skilled Riders Educated And Involved It s really hard to believe another summer has come and gone. By the time this article goes to print the leaves will be beginning to change colors, which presents us with great opportunities for Fall Foliage rides, and who can say no to a late lunch or early dinner ride on a sunny afternoon. Let s not forget there are still a lot of great Riding days ahead of us even though the temperature will be cooling a bit. This also means we have many training opportunities ahead of us. It s never too early to start thinking about future Training Events later this Fall or during the Winter months. Let s not forget the PA District Rally will be early next year in May, and that s not too far in the future. For a complete list of available Modules and Seminars visit the Pa District Website home page and click on the Training Button. Please contact us if you are interested in attending a class or if your Chapter is interested in hosting a Training Event anytime in the future. With the support of our great GW University Instructors/Trainers, we ll do our best to fulfill your requests at a site convenient to the majority of our members. We look forward to hearing from you soon. All requests are welcome. Just us at (gbvanart@msn.com) or call ( ). Please Promote and Support the Training programs within your Chapters. We need Your help and participation to make the most of these programs. We ll do our best to make the training both Informative and FUN!!! We look forward to seeing you at a future Training event. 11 Hi Folks: The fall colors are some of the most beautiful scenery you will see during the remainder of the riding season. With the cold weather soon moving in I think that most of us will start thinking of what we must do to prepare the wings for winter storage. Something you should consider doing before putting the wing away for the season is a T-CLOCK inspection. TIRES: Your tires may need to be replaced. Now would be the time to start this project rather than waiting for the spring riding season to start. CLUTCH: Check the clutch and brake reservoirs. Are they low in fluid or has the fluid turned a very dark color? If they have you should change both the clutch and brake fluid now. LUBRICANTS: How long has it been since you changed your anti-freeze. Remember your anti-freeze has been working hard to keep your engine cool and to lubricate your water pump. MAKE SURE you use the proper antifreeze when changing, as not all types of anti-freeze will work in your Wing. OIL: You may wait until spring to change your oil but I personally do not think it is a good idea to leave the old oil in the engine over the winter because it contains acids as well as old oil has a tendency to turn to sludge as it sets and the dirt sinks to the bottom of the engine case. CABLES & CONTROLS: You should check your throttle and choke cables for smooth operation. Make sure the throttle returns with a snap and to an idle when released. The choke, if equipped, also needs to work smoothly and to return to the open position. KICKSTAND: Does your kickstand have free movement and a good spring to pull it up? Look at the switches and check the operation with the switch on. Check the center stand s return spring for smooth operation. In addition to the T-Clock inspection, you should check the battery terminals and make sure they are clean and the water level in the battery is at the proper level. If you are not going to run your motorcycle at least once a month during storage, you should put the battery tender on to keep the level of charge up to the maximum level. Last but not least you should clean up the wing, wax it and cover it for the winter storage season to protect it from dust. If you take the above precautions, you should be ready to go in the spring and have an enjoyable riding season having done your preparation during the winter season while the bike is being stored. Have a GREAT DAY. RIDE SAFE AND RIDE PROUD. 11 Chuck Stone, PA District Educator Phone: (814) Cell Phone: (814) redtrike@embarqmail.com

GWRRA National North 11 th Ave. Phoenix, AZ Michael Olson Assistant Director of Motorist Awareness Phone: President: Fred & Anita Alkire Presidential Assistants: Bruce & Barb Beeman Jere & Sherry Goodman Francois & Chantal Sequin Bob & Nancy Shrader Tom & Renee Wasluck Don & Sharon Weber Directors: Rider Education Susan & George Huttman Membership: Larry & Penny Anthony University: Fred & Clara Boldt Mororist Awareness Mike & Barri Critzman Finance Randall Drake Ameritus Ray & Sandi Garris Overseas: Dan & Rachel Sandervich Did You Know. There are, as of this writing, twenty-nine Districts that have District Motorist Awareness Coordinators. So, one might ponder what does that mean to GWRRA Members or any motorcyclist? It means that there are Districts in our organization that do not have a coordinator to help Chapters get the important message out to the non-riding public that they should watch for motorcycles when driving on our public roads. One would certainly hope that some individuals in Chapters in those Districts are trying to get the word out and doing their part to help more people be aware of motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, bicycles, and pedestrians are on the same roads. Current District Motorist Awareness Program Coordinators have MAP resources such as tri-folds and coloring booklets for children to help get the message across to the driving public. District Directors, I am certain, would not refuse the help. If you know your District does not have a MAPC (Motorist Awareness Program Coordinator), consider it and visit with your District Director about it. If they don t have the answers, I am certain they know to contact one of the Directors or Assistant Directors of MAP or the Home Office to obtain information about the program. We would love to have you as part of the program. Riders and Drivers United for Safety Michael Olson 12

GWRRA Vision Gold Wing Road Riders Association [GWRRA], founded in 1977, is recognized as the world's largest single-marquee motorcycle association in the world. GWR- RA provides safety, technical, and educational services to its Members world-wide Dedicated to our Motto; Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge, GWRRA Members enjoy the freedom of belonging to a not-for-profit, non -religious and nonpolitical organization. GWRRA Values Friends - GWRRA Members are men and women from all walks of life with varied interests and backgrounds. We have Gold Wing and other touring motorcycle riders of all age groups. Some ride solo and many ride with small and large groups! New Members join GWRRA especially for the technical information we share; some of our Members join for the enjoyment of riding with friends and also meeting new friends. Tom & Renee Wasluck Presidential Assistants The dictionary describes a volunteer as a person who freely undertakes or expresses a willingness to provide a service. We believe it goes further than that. A volunteer is a person who gives of themselves, who believes in something or an organization, and who has the desire to help wherever needed. As with all aspects in life, there are all different kinds of volunteers. Some will step up and help anytime you need help. You know these people, the ones that will set up a poker run, help with a booth at Wing Ding, help with your rally, and possibly be involved in other things in their personal life. They are valuable and very much appreciated in any organization. Then we have those who are willing to help on a leadership level. When someone steps up to this level, they have more of an obligation. They need to work with the other leadership or officers to insure the members they serve are happy and to make sure things are going as they should. The organization benefits from its volunteers. The volunteer benefits even more than the organization benefits. Many times a volunteer meets new people and makes new friends. They feel a sense of pride in what they have accomplished. Someone who volunteers grows as a person and is always learning. At Wing Ding this past week, we saw so many smiling faces on the volunteers. We listened to the different ways the people manning the booths or areas made our members feel important - from the Newbie cheer at registration and pre-registration to the bundle cry at the ticket booth, to the arm band wave on the escalator. You made it fun. For that and the time you gave to making Wing Ding a little better, we thank you! We are proud of the volunteer network in this organization. To all of our volunteer officers, support team, and any other member who helps in any way - we salute you. Tom & Renee Wasluck Tom.renee11@gmail.com 13
