H.O.G. Chapter #2376 Vol. VIII, No. II February 2017 Est. 19 September 2009 Official Newsletter of Harley Owners Group Chapter #2376, Anthem, Arizona USA Jeff Feldstein Fluffy Assistant Director H ello all members of Anthem HOG. The year is progressing along nicely and it is going to be a great one. We have already had some really interesting rides. We went to the Commemorative Air Force (see in Mesa, a nice group of 20 members. It was really interesting to learn about the planes and to see and actually have the opportunity to board a B-17, see the cockpit, bomb bay, and walk through the entire airplane. What a neat experience. The Arizona Railway Museum (see in Chandler was a lot of fun, too, walking through several of the restored cars to see how rail life was decades ago. We had a chance to be inside a steam engine cab and view how all the levers and We have short rides, medium controls worked. rides and longer rides, T hese are just a few of the many events planned for something for everybody... the coming year. February should be even better. We, under the direction of the Head Road Captain, are planning more rides with things to do in addition to just going for food. We are planning to see more museums. I am leading a trip to the Titan Missile Museum (see which is a little southwest of Tucson, for example. This is a chance to visit an actual missile in a silo that was part of the cold war. This should be quite a trip. T here are many planned events coming up: the annual Desert Ride on April 22nd, a progressive dinner ride in March, our annual picnic, an overnight trip to Tombstone, and many more. We have short rides, medium rides and longer rides, something for everybody to enjoy and have fun. My thought is to motivate and encourage you, the members, to participate in the Chapter events. Coming to the meetings and seeing all your friends is just one way, but going on rides are even more fun and, of course, seeing the beautiful Arizona scenery is always breathtaking. A nthem HOG is a riding Chapter, and we have two rides per week, except when we have our monthly meeting. So gas up the bike and join your fellow members on our rides. Check the Anthem HOG Calendar on our web site for additional information on each ride, and call the HOT line ( ) before each ride to get up-to-date information on ride status or changes. If you like to suggest a favorite ride, talk with our Head Road Captain, Rory Kraft, and he will see what can be done. See you on the road. - Your Assistant Director, Fluffy. 2 Paula Genovese Trooper Ladies of Harley Officer Calling all COOKS, Hosts and Hostesses: In keeping with one of our mottos, we ride to eat, we are scheduling a Progressive Dinner Ride on Saturday March 25th. Our last progressive ride was three years ago. It was a lot of fun and we got to know a little more about our hosts. Plus, the food was awesome. Time to do it again! We would like to schedule three stops at three different host/hostess house. In other words, our journey includes a three-course meal. The first stop will feature an appetizer. The second stop will be the main course, and dessert will be waiting at our final stop. Members wanting to participate in this yummy ride must RSVP so that each host/hostess may know the number of people to expect and how much food to provide. Food does not have to be fancy, nor does it need to be homemade. Our group is pretty easy to please. If you have the space and would like to host the group as one of the stops please let me know. If you like to cook and just do not have the space also please let me know. We can work with that. If you have the space and want to host and cook that would be awesome. Just know you do not have to both host and cook. Paula Trooper Genovese Ladies of Harley Officer LOH@AnthemHOG.com Cell:

February 2017 Vol. VIII, No. II Keith Preston Potter Editor Living in Arizona means year-round riding. However, the Sonoran Desert can produce some pretty chilly days during the winter months. If you aren t properly prepared, a joy ride can quickly turn into a frozen ordeal. Here are some thoughts on making your Harley-Davidson riding experience during the winter months a warmer, more enjoyable one. Stay Warm In order to stay warm while riding, we have to do everything we can to insulate the body in order to keep the heat we produce on our body. For motorcyclists, insulation is achieved when these two aspects are met: Layered clothing and wind proofing. Layers are critical for riding a motorcycle in cold weather. The number of layers you'll need to wear depends upon personal preference (some people run a little hotter than others) and the temperature outside. The key is to have enough layers on that you feel comfortable (maybe even slightly warm) when you step outside and just stand in place (before you ride your motorcycle). Remember two things: Your bottom layer should always be some type of snug fitting thermal or fleece underwear. This will create a warm layer of air between your body and this material. Don't wear so many layers that you lose mobility. Wind proofing takes some trial and error to perfect. It may take several rides before you finally plug all of those air leaks. The main thing to do for wind proofing is to make sure your outer layer is some type of wind-proof material. Ideally, you should look for something that is both wind-proof and waterproof. With layers and wind proofing, you stand a better chance of keeping your core nice and warm. Mind Your Hands and Feet As you get cold your body focuses circulation on your internal organs to keep them warm, while your feet and hands receive less circulation. If you don t have heated grips, then quality, cold-weather gloves are worth their weight in gold. Insulated boots are a plus as well. Look for gloves that are long enough to completely (cont. p. 4) 3

(continued from p. 3) cover the wrist. Find a pair with a hook and loop closure system at the wrist that allows you to tighten the gloves. If the glove feels tight, get the next size up. This ensures good circulation. Two additional qualities to look for in cold-weather gloves are high efficiency insulation and pre-curved fingers. Make sure your boots fit comfortably. Tight-fitting boots decrease circulation and increase your sensation of feeling cold. Boots should be waterproof, fit above the ankle, and be comfortable to ride in. Insulated boots are nice, but warm socks provide most of the insulation you may need. Look for the Signs Be aware of your own body and know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. If your skin feels like needles are pricking it, frostbite is on its way and you need to do something immediately. If your skin starts to turn white or waxy and feels numb and hard, you need to get immediate medical attention. Hypothermia is where your core body temperature drops below the minimum temperature required for your body to operate. Hypothermia causes mild confusion, sluggish behavior, poor muscle coordination, and incoherent behavior. If you start feeling cold and can't decide if you should pull over, you are facing an early stage... a joy ride can quickly turn into a frozen ordeal. of hypothermia. Pull over immediately and get a hot coffee! If you start shivering uncontrollably, feel sluggish, or even drunk, then you're in serious trouble. Hypothermia is already underway and you need to stop immediately to warm up. If you plan on riding in temperatures below 40-degrees Fahrenheit, then you may consider heated gear. Do your own research before investing in this effective, but expensive, protection. Conversations with other riders who have experience riding in cold weather can be an excellent resource. Finally, when you ride in the winter months, be sure to take pictures along the way and share them with your friends and fellow riders living back east or up north... where their motorcycles lay dormant, hibernating for the winter, waiting for the first day of riding season. It s a fact: As we age our hearing diminishes. Other factors contribute to hearing loss as well. One factor is prolonged exposure to loud sounds. On a recent ride, one of our Chapter members showed me his custom earplugs. He said they were very effective and that they also cost over $100. I wanted ear protection but didn t want to part with the cash, so I did some research and found in-ear plugs that I could make myself. I purchased two kits from Radians one blue and one red for about $10 each. The kit came with easy instructions and I was able to create two sets of color-coded earplugs that fit nicely when wearing a helmet. I went with two different colors so I could easily remember which one went in which ear. The plugs are great. I can still hear my radio, but the engine and wind noise is greatly reduced. To learn more, see - Potter 4

Rory Kraft Navigator Head Road Captain Just like the three things in real estate Location... Location... Location safety is one of the most important things that should be on your mind when you get on your bike for a ride. I ride almost every day and I am always thinking about things that I have heard. Like: Most accidents happen within five miles from home; a car changed lanes on top of me; a cage pulled out from a side street and almost hit me. I want to get home safe and sound and of course I don t want a scratch on Purple Passion (my Ultra Limited) either, so I am always looking and am always aware of my surroundings. I have things going on in my life all the time, but when I get on my Harley I try to forget everything and concentrate on my riding and try to improve my skills as I ride. There are many distracted drivers on the road, including young inexperienced drivers. There are things that I am on the lookout for when I ride. For example, when I m riding alone and I come to a stop in traffic I always point my bike toward an out like between the cars and constantly look in my rear view mirrors. I tap my brakes until I I want to get home safe and sound... see that the car coming up behind me is aware that I am there. I always leave my bike in gear with the clutch pulled in just in case I have to move very quickly. When changing lanes, always signal your intent to change lanes and check your mirrors as well as doing a quick neck snap over your shoulder before you move into the new lane. Ride looking ahead of where you are going for any obstacles, such as a parked car, a cage pulling out from a side street, riding behind a truck that might have something fall off, or vehicles used when moving sometimes people aren t the best at loading and securing their load. As you are riding you need to leave yourself an out or a way that you could avoid any of these circumstances. Let s take these things one solution at a time. Parked cars or a car pulling out; slow down, let off on the throttle and hand over clutch, and foot over the brake pedal ready for anything and change lanes and pass with caution. If you see that a truck or oddly loaded car could have something fall from it, slow down and see if there is a way to safely pass the vehicle or make a turn and go down another street. These are only two examples of what you should be looking for as you ride around this or any other town. As I always say, ride safe and have fun; but the new bikes have all kinds of distractions on them. Play with them in your driveway at home not out in traffic. There are many people out there that are talking on their phones or texting, eating their breakfast and not paying attention to a... leave yourself an out... relatively small object (you on your motorcycle) on the road. You have to be their eyes as well; making sure they see you and your bike. Please ride safe and next time you get on your Harley think about the things I have said and written here and you will be a much safer rider rather... than a statistic on the five o clock news. 5

My next topic is our charity, St. Mary s. Walmart is not allowing anyone to solicit donations in front of their stores except Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. I am researching other places we can use for solicitation on behalf of St Mary s. If anyone has an idea as to other places we might contact, please let me know. Our Chapter s Desert Ride will be on April 22 nd. More information will follow on this. As a reminder, our Chapter website has our activities listed on the calendar. Please use this to stay up-to-date with our activities. Phillip McKee Buddy Stubbs Marketing Director: We have moved Buddy s Bash into Bike Week and it is now called Buddy s Bike Week Bash. This move has accounted for a significant increase in attendance. It will take place on Saturday, April 8 th, from noon to 8:00 pm. Plus, we will be looking for volunteers from both HOG Chapters. If anyone would like to volunteer, please see Janet. We will also be in Cave Creek with a couple tents. In addition, next Saturday, January 28 th, there will be a chili cook off at the Phoenix store. On February 18 th, there will be a clothing sale in the Anthem store. Finally, on February 25 th, there will be Hot Rods & Harleys at the Phoenix store with music, cars and bikes. Rodney Benner Director: On a somber note, one of our members, Josh McKenna, was recently involved in an accident on his motorcycle. His wife, Linda, is here today and would it be possible for her to give us an update on Josh. Linda shared with us that he is still in the hospital. He has a compound fracture of the femur above the knee, a broken neck, a shoulder injury and some broken bones in his right hand. He is doing okay but he has a long way to go for a full recovery. He is being Josh with the nurses which is a good sign that he is doing better. The accident occurred at an intersection with a car turning in front of him. So, please be careful out there. There is a go fund me account for donations set up at grumpybikersassistancefund.com. Thank you, Linda. Our prayers are with Josh and a speedy recover. Jeff Feldstein Assistant Director; The Desert Ride is coming up on April 22 nd. We are going to need volunteers for some stop points to pass out tickets (we will probably need three pairs) and we will also need help in the morning with set up. If anyone is interested in volunteering, I will be out at the Membership table after the meeting. We have not picked the final route but we are considering two routes with one being shorter than the other. Both will end at the same destination. More information will be coming as soon as it is finalized. Adrienne Coro Treasurer/Photographer: No report. 8

Jim Swan Secretary/Membership Officer: As of today, the Chapter has 89 members. We had 25 members that have not renewed their membership for 2017 and we had five members that chose to end their membership at the end of the year. Coincidently, we signed 25 new members in 2016 and seven enrolled at the end of the year for In summary, we lost 30 members and gained 32. We have one member that has qualified for zero dues in 2018, Clive Francis. He brought two new members as the end of the year for And, one of his new members has already brought one new member. You are the best ambassadors for this club. Keep talking about the benefits this Chapter brings to its members with your friends, family and the people you sit with at HOGS & DOGS. Bring your prospects to me and I will take it from there. I need your help to grow our membership to what it was at the end of the year. Keith Preston Editor: Lynn Crusoe was the winner of the find your National Membership number in the last newsletter. Lynn was not in attendance to accept her gift card so we entrusted the card to Tony Crusoe to pass them onto her. Congratulations Lynn! It is my plan to have the Chapter Chatter go out the first Friday of each month. If you have any articles about places you have been or rides that you have done that you would like in the newsletter I will need them by the end of the previous month. You can send them to editor@anthemhog.com. As a reminder, in each newsletter there is a hidden National HOG Membership number that has been randomly identified by a random number generator. If you find your number, let me know so you can collect your $20 gift card. The number that Lynn found last month was hidden in the picture of the Milwaukee 8 motor. Paula Genovese Ladies of Harley: We are going to have a progressive dinner ride on Saturday, March 25 th. I am hoping to have three locations to ride to, one for appetizer, one for the main course and one for dessert. If anyone is interested in helping by cooking or hosting a location, contact me by at loh@anthemhog.com by the end of February so the plans can be finalized. Rory Kraft Head Road Captain: I send out the Anthem H.O.G. Rides & Events flyer but due to the font and paper size I can t always include all the details about the ride. Janet mentioned using the HOG Chapter calendar to obtain ride information. The calendar also provides more details about the ride, the route, facts about where we are going, stops along the way, websites, menus, etc. At next month s meeting, we are going to try to set up a computer so we can demonstrate the benefits the calendar offers. The ride flyer and the calendar only shows one time. This is the time to meet at the departure location. Plan on leaving 30 minutes after the time listed. We need everyone there at the meet time to give everyone time to arrive and so the Road Captain can do the briefing. You can t show up at the last minute and expect to safely go on the ride. We currently have nine Road Captains but we are always looking for more. If you are interested let any of us know and we can help provide any necessary training. Our Road Captains and their handles are; Rory-Navigator, Jeff-Fluffy, Keith-Potter, Doug-Big Hoss, Rodney-Bulldog, Steve-Jersey, Clive-Clive, Jim Cloud-Cloudy, Jim Swan-Swannee. Finally, don t forget to call the HOG Hot Line prior to a ride just in case there have been changes about the ride. 9

Brian Hicks Safety Officer: I want to introduce you to the list of sponsors to the File of Life. It is available from the Anthem Community Association, the New River/Desert Hills Community Association, and the Daisy Mountain Fire Department. Its purpose is to assist first responders if they come to your home by providing a history of the patient. If the patient is to be transported this information can go along with them to provided medical history to medical personnel. It is suggested to make copies so you can have extra copies. It could also be used on your motorcycle. Please see me if you would like one. The American Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Foundation is having a seminar on March 5 th entitled Riding for the Long Haul. It will take place at the Shrine Auditorium, 552 N 40 th Street, Phoenix, AZ. There will be approximately 25 dealers, food vendors, prizes and giveaways, riding demonstration teams, etc., all to promote riding safely. Information will be given to the Editor for the newsletter. Jeff said that the Arizona MSF was offering a course for new riders for only $50. Additionally, as of the end of 2015, there are over 200,000 registered motorcycle riders in the state of Arizona. In that year, there were over 3,000 motorcycle accidents. Of those accidents, 80% will resulted in an injury and there were 134 fatalities. In summary, look ahead, be alert, be safe and don t assume. Next month we will be talking about defensive driving skills. Clive Francis Road Captain: Looking for new things to do, I stopped in at a go-kart track named Octane Racing of 101. We discussed group rates. For a group for 8-12 the cost is $60 per person which includes appetizers, soft drinks, ten minutes of racing or 14 laps. With no food, the price is $15.
