1 IKES NEWS VOLUME 17 ISSUE 4 APRIL 2017 Published monthly by the Lincoln Izaak Walton League Wes s Notes Wow last Saturday began to wind down the month with crazy weather and huge turn-outs for our shooting sports programs. The state NASP tournament brought over 800 archers into town and our conference trap event saw over 500 shooters slogging around in our chapter mud and rain all weekend. At least the archers were able to shoot inside the Speedway Sports Facility in the dry. And I was just reading some information from National Shooting Sports Foundation about the significant continuing increases in youth shooting sports across the country. Sure hated to miss the turkey season opener but there is always me next week thru May sometime. We have time to call in a big gobbler. Chapter happenings The shooting season is upon us, but there are still many of last year s members that have not renewed yet. And their gate cards have been deactivated. So if one of your favorite shooting buddies can t get in that likely is the reason. Of course you may always buy them a guest pass and help them out. However if you do that, please remember the need to identify on the guest pass envelope who you are and who gets the visitor pass. THEN be sure to tear off the tab (Guest Pass) before leaving the check in point. Lately several folks have not been identifying themselves which causes concern for our insurance package. Thanks to a great effort largely by trap team volunteers we have a significantly improved and cleaned up county road ditch in front of our place. That effort was huge in helping to maintain a good community image. At least it is a great improvement. Maybe someday we can get the broken wires and posts fixed up. Thanks for taking pride in our facilities. Maybe a few others will want to help later this spring when we take to our highway cleanup for the early pickup. Our chapter has joined the support for Earth Day celebrations with the Kaleo on the Loup Camp in hosting a workshop for high school and college youth here in Lincoln on April 22. We will help underwrite speaking fees for a Dave and Amy Freeman of National Geographic fame presentating about their experiences spending a year in the Boundaries Waters National Park with only a tent and a canoe. I am sure the presentation will be outstanding. John Wittwer is heading a table exhibit for this event also should you wish to join him. 2 VOLUME 17 ISSUE 4 PAGE 2 Continued from pg 1 Lastly our chapter is hosting the annual UNL Wildlife Club awards banquet on April 8 th in our clubhouse. Along with the various student recognitions will be the Journal Star Outstanding Wildlife Conservationist of the year award given to a Nebraskan. Highlighting the evening will be a presentation by the incredible photographer Mike Forsberg. Our chapter has been supporting the wildlife club in various ways for many years and will include a Merit Award for one of the students this year. We may even get to meet the recipients or our two UNL scholarship recipients. Dinner will be served and tickets for Ikes members are available. Legislative Update Most significantly is the support in the legislature for LB566 and LB635 which are sportsmen s priority introductions. Those pieces of legislation would strengthen antipoaching enforcement by providing options to join the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact and increase penalties for wildlife violations. In fact the Natural Resources Committee members all signed on as co-sponsors, combined both bills into 566 and reported it to the floor as a priority matter. It has now moved past General File (the first of three votes to pass it into law) and is generally supported. I predict it will pass. The other measure of utmost importance to us is LB68 which is the firearm preemption measure that would serve to disallow cities and counties from enforcing regulations on firearm transportation that are more stringent than state law. That bill also has passed the Government and Military Committee and awaits action by the general assembly. If Senator Hilgers is your senator especially pat him on the back and let him know you appreciate that he made it his designated priority bill. It still has some stiff opposition by the Omaha Police officers but seems to be closer to passage than in any previous years. In the Big Picture Nationally IWLA has hired a highly qualified Nebraskan to join our Gaithersburg staff working on Ag Programs for our country. We all know how critical to future wildlife populations that will be. Duane Hovorka who had been the Executive Director of Nebraska Wildlife Federation will be taking on the huge task of helping formulate agricultural programs for the future under our nations Farm Bill. He likely will begin duties in our central office by May 1 st. Perhaps we can get him to address our chapter one of these days. If you know Duane, you will appreciate his talent for working with politicians and the like to make things better. Congratulations Duane!! Enough Ramblin But remember this; A dime has 118 ridges around the edge. Trivia you needed to know from the desk of Pat Keslar IZAAK WALTON BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING 2ndTuesday of the month 7:15pm AT THE CLUBHOUSE ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND GOT A PARTY? 4 PAGE 4 IKES NEWS March 4, Yard Benchrest by Mike Shapoval I had to go back and look up the weather report to get the information for this months match. Because all I could remember about it was that it was windy, very windy. Well weather underground had this to report. At 10 am the wind was around 7 mph out of the South South West with gusts up to 20 mph. At 11 am it was 15 mph from the same direction with gusts up to 35 mph. We started this match a little after 10 am, our wintertime start time, and I think it was more like the 11 am condition on the range. It was very challenging for everyone that shot this match. Also, we ran three more relays after the Custom Class, which shot first. The turn out was good for this match, since the weather had warmed up to have a shoot. It sure makes a difference on the body count for our matches when the temperature gets above the freezing mark. Hopefully we will start to have some weather that stays on the warmer side of the freezing point. Instead of going up and down like yo-yo like it has been the first couple of months. It seemed like I would watch the temperature go up and down and you re trying to figure out which day was going to nice enough to pack up your stuff for a trip to the range. Oh well, we get stuff done sooner or later. Even though I like to get it done sooner. We just have to take it all in stride and things usually work out. I did not have a picture of the firing line this month to submit but, I did get the people who had the yearly TOP GUN awards coming to them stay around. And got those passed out. Pictured from left to right, Custom Class - Mike Shapoval, Two-Gun and Varmint Class - John Koppes, Shooter of the Year and Hunter Class- Don Westover and Most X s-jeff Shultz. This months match winners are: Custom Class, 1 st Rod Dewey 188-1x, 2 nd Jim Gryfdahl 184-3x, 3 rd Don Westover 183-1x. Varmint Class, 1 st John Koppes 188, 2 nd Mike Durbin 187-2x, 3 rd Don Westover 183-1x. Hunter Class, 1 st Mike Durbin 172, 2 nd Don Westover 168, 3 rd Larry Bennet 160. HIGHWAY CLEANUP We have a Highway clean up scheduled for the Weekend of the 6th of May for the area of Highway 2 that we are responsible for. Meet at the Clubhouse around 9:30 AM and we generally provide Hot Dogs for Lunch afterwards. Contact John Wittwer
