E. Olds Chapter families in their Oldsmobiles lined up for the parade in Dimondale. This is the second year Chapter members have driven in the Dimondale Parade. The Village is hosting a cruise-in on June 17 th as a pre-event to the Homecoming show, and this was our way of advertising this event to the public. At 11 AM, we were off, driving through downtown to the cheers and admiration of those watching the parade. The lead car of the Oldsmobiles was the 1971 Cutlass raffle car from the R. E. Olds Museum, brought by Ashley and Arlene Jones and driven by son Marc. Tom and Jan Hummer drove their 1933 convertible and ; with Scott and Sue Whittaker in their ; and Bud and Maggie Hilliard driving their 1967 Cutlass convertible. Joe and Barb Pohl followed with their 1969 Cutlass convertible; and Don and Eva Cooper drove their 1969 Cutlass convertible and , and Doug and Judy Badgley followed in their 1972 Hurst/Olds Convertible; and Troy Collins drove his Elite. We were an impressive sight of Oldsmobiles. Following the parade everyone went to Hummer s for a potluck picnic. Hummer s opened their home (and garages) for our afternoon of socializing and food. Everyone brought a dish or two to pass, and we had quite a feast. The food was great and the company was even better.

3 Page 3 uestion: How can the annual Oldsmobile Home- Q coming Car Show in Lansing get any better? Answer: We don t know; it just DOES get better with each passing year! For the 2011 edition of the world s largest oneday Oldsmobile car show, the committee decided to initiate class-free parking. A 1919 model Olds could be parked next to a 2002 Intrigue, for instance. Many positive comments were heard about the random parking arrangement this year. Keeping attendees happy is our mission. In addition to goodie bags given to registrants, 159 quality door prizes were awarded to lucky participants holding a winning ticket. Speaking of giveaways, the 50/50 prize winner netted $263 cash. Combine that with the oldies music and delicious food available, and how could you not have a good time! By all accounts, 2011 contained the largest show field, with the most swap vendors in the nineteen year history of Homecoming. Officially, 495 Oldsmobiles participated in this years Story and photos by Wayne Mason show; but we know that numerous Oldsmobiles arrived through the swap space entrance where no records are kept for each incoming (for sale) car. We easily exceeded 500 Oldsmobiles this year! As would be expected, the largest number of Oldsmobiles in the show (375) arrived from Michigan, while Canada contributed 14 cars. Oldsmobiles from 19 states were also represented in the show field. Surprisingly, 130 registered participants were firsttimers to our event. I spoke to Craig from Toronto, Canada who told me it was his first time attending our show, but that it would not be his last. He was very impressed with the magnitude of our event. At the show field registration tent, Sharon Severance (left) assists Ed Shand - registrar extraordinaire (center), and Jerry Garfield with early morning registrations. Parts and memorabilia vendors enjoyed expanded set-up space this year. With 92 vendors registering to use 185 spaces, our allotted swap space grew by about 25% over last year. While only one vendor grumbled over the newly expanded area, it was perhaps Traffic builds in the registration line as the morning progresses. the premier place to setup shop. Located directly behind and adjacent to the show cars, vendors had a built-in customer base the show field spectators! Another way the Homecoming Committee strives to enhance participants Lansing experience is by adding new features. This year, two auxiliary events were planned to supplement the Saturday Homecoming show. On Friday evening, the small town of Dimondale opened its main street to a downtown car show, complete with live music, food, and shopping. Approximately 65 Homecoming participants caravanned from the Homecoming show site to park on Bridge Street in downtown Dimondale. On Saturday evening after the Homecoming show concluded, participants again Continued on page 4 See Homecoming

4 Page 4 Homecoming Cont. from page 3 caravanned this time to Miller Farms and Ice Cream Parlor, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan to enjoy a barbeque rib dinner complete with ice cream treats. Miller s historic farm included a blacksmith shop, one-room school house and the largest barn in Michigan. The second floor of the barn provided the perfect location to view old Oldsmobile TV ads on a large screen. Roughly 55 participants attended the Miller Farm event. The RE Olds Chapter is dedicated to keeping the Oldsmobile name alive through our sponsorship of the annual Olds Homecoming Car Show. Our aim is NOT to make a lot of money, but rather to ensure each and every participant enjoys their time in Lansing. To borrow a tag-line from one of our local GM dealers, If we make a buck, it s sheer luck! We re not in it for the money; we re in it for the fun. From all the positive comments heard at this year s show, I believe we accomplished that goal! Come see us next year; it s our 20 th anniversary show always held the Saturday of Father s Day weekend. A big Thank You to Ed Shand, RE Olds Chapter Homecoming registrar, for providing show statistics for this article. 50/50 tickets were in demand all day! The Motor City Rockets Chapter was well represented in the show field.
