2 convention Invitation We invite you to join us at the 56 th SCANZ Convention Frontiers in Coatings on 29th - 31st August. After the fantastic success of the 2013 Convention, we are returning to Chateau Tongariro, based at Mt Ruapehu in the centre of the North Island, and the end of August dates will showcase this area beautifully. Last year we moved the convention dates to be the week prior to the SCAA Conference in the hope that we would entice more international speakers to come Downunder to attend both events. This is exactly what happened, so we are doing this again. We have also stayed with the Wednesday - Friday format, which we feel worked very well last time. The SCANZ Convention brings together researchers, chemists, sales people, manufacturers, suppliers and academics from throughout New Zealand (and Australia), with approximately 80 delegates attending. The 2018 year theme is Frontiers in Coatings, and Tongariro National Park is a fitting place for this, being the first national park formed in New Zealand, and the fourth in the world. There are three active volcanoes, and Mt Ruapehu itself has 5 main peaks, with the highest reaching 2,797 meters. This year we have a fantastic array of technical papers with 10 speakers from overseas! We also have a fantastic social programme that allows for networking opportunities throughout the event. We are confident that you will enjoy the friendly, personal nature of the SCANZ convention and look forward to seeing you there. destination Chateau Tongariro sits on lush forested slopes that lie within Tongariro National Park in the heart of New Zealand s North Island. The hotel is roughly midway between the cities of Auckland and Wellington, which are both around 4 hours away by car. The Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park in New Zealand and a dual World Heritage area. This staus recognises the park s important Maori Cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features. The park is centered around three active volcanoes, Mt. Tongariro, Mt. Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in the Lord of the Rings filming locations) and Mt. Ruapehu. Mt Ruapehu has the only commercial ski fields in the North Island, and the convention is held in the middle of the ski season, so there should be lots of snow. WEATHER: Unsurprisingly, the average temperature at Chateau Tongariro in August is very cool at 3 C. The afternoons can be a little cool with average high temperatures reaching 7 C, and the overnight lows average -1 C. In August there is a range/ variation of daily average temperatures of 8 C. The weather in August is quite sopping with sleet, snow or rain at intervals. So while the venue will be warm, be prepared when going outside.

3 convention schedule WEDNESDAY 29 TH AUGUST 1pm NZPMA AGM & GENERAL MEETING All NZPMA members are invited to the AGM held at the Chateau meeting room. Lunch will be served first, with the AGM and then the General Meeting. If you are interested in joining the NZPMA, and attending the meeting, please contact 4pm REGISTRATION OPENS Registration opens at Chateau Tongariro from 4pm onwards 5.30pm WELCOME COCKTAILS The convention starts with a Welcome Function in the Chateau Tongariro for all delegates and partners. With most people travelling via car to get to the Chateau, drinks and nibbles are welcomed, along with the opportunity to catch up with old friends as well as network with those we may only meet once a year. We would like to thank ASCC for sponsoring the Welcome Function, and providing everyone with a chance to start the convention in a positive way. 7pm THE BRENNTAG QUIZ NIGHT The Quiz Night is an extremely enjoyable way to start the Convention. Brenntag started this back in 2013 and the event has become more popular each year. Everyone is invited, and we encourage you to make up a team and enjoy the fun. The night is lead by the fantastic Quiz Master Damian Hond, and his Brenntag team will be keeping tally of the results and monitoring the teams! The Quiz starts at 7pm, and will run for around 2 hours. Special thanks to Brenntag for sponsoring, organising and running this fantastic event! THURSDAY 30 TH AUGUST The Technical Programme starts at 8.30am with a Welcome from the President. 6.30pm CONFERENCE DINNER EXPEDITIONS & EXPLORATIONS We finish the full day s sessions with the convention dinner. This year, the theme is Expeditions & Explorations, which can relate to any expedition - be it jungle, mountain, river, artic or antartic, sea, cave, desert and even outer space. To boldly go where no man has gone before. We look forward to seeing the plethora of outfit ideas that our delegates come up with. To ensure the evening is a fantastic event, there will be a great band, and prizes for the best outfits! FRIDAY 31 ST AUGUST The Technical Programme starts at 8.30am, and then the Activities start from 12.20pm. 6.30pm FRIDAY DINNER AT CHATEAU RESTAURANT This is a great way for those people staying on for the Friday night, or even the weekend, to network and catch up with people who you may see only once a year. Everyone just orders off the menu, and we pay our own bills. EXPEDITIONS & EXPLORATIONS Dinner & Dance in the Grand ballroom MOVIE NIGHT AT THE CHATEAU Beyond the Edge, a docudrama about Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay s historical ascent of Mount Everest in (No charge for this.) NIGHT SKIING Enjoy the unique experience of skiing or snowboarding at night. Night Skiing will be operating from 5pm 9pm every Friday & Saturday during the planned operational season until September 29. Night Ski Pass is Adult $49 and Youth $39. There will be a real festival feeling on the mountain with music, small park features and great food.

4 TECHNICAL PROGRAMME The final programme for the convention will be available on the website in July For a full list of papers please visit the Convention website Keynote Speaker Catherine Beard is Executive Director of Export NZ and ManufacturingNZ, divisions of Business NZ, New Zealand s largest business advocacy group, representing thousands of businesses of all sizes. The Business NZ group includes four large regional business associations, the Major Companies Group, Export NZ, more than 70 affiliated industry associations and Buy NZ Made. The group s goal is New Zealand s prosperity through successful business. Catherine works with government and other key decision makers on issues of concern to exporters and manufacturers. Catherine has spent the last 20 years as a lobbyist and advocate for a wide range of industries on a wide range of issues, including on climate change issues for the energy intensive sector, all aspects of the fire and general insurance sector and the agricultural sector (dairy focus). Catherine has participated in Prime Minister led trade missions to Indonesia and China and represents BusinessNZ at annual Global Federation of Competitiveness Council meetings. 5 ACTIVITy options OLD COACH ROAD MOUNTAIN BIKE ADVENTURE The historical Old Coach Road trail is great for the family. From Horopito the track is mostly downhill and more enjoyable for the beginner/ novice mountain biker. There are a few small climbs when riding the trail this way, but more downhill. For the experienced mountain biker departing from Ohakune riding to Horopito and back is an excellent option for a 30km ride. Along the trail signboards are pointing out the history of the Old Coach road, they give you a great insight into the difficulty of building the rail trunk line. Rating: Easy Distance: 15kms Time: Allow 2-3 hours riding time Bikes, helmets, transport and water are supplied. You need to bring shorts, polypro, windbreaker, sandshoes and camera. PRICE: $75.00 per person TONGARIRO WHITE WATER RAFTING Depart at 12.20pm, back around pm. Enjoy a grade 3+ White Water Rafting experience that combines the heart pumping action of more than 60 rapids with sufficient lower grade water that enables the splendid scenery and ample wildlife to be enjoyed. During all this, challenge your limits by daring to do the cliff jump and take in the commentary from our knowledgeable professional guides. More details are on the www. scanz.org.nz website. SCENIC CHAIR LIFT Grab a ride on the Scenic Chairlift at Whakapapa Skifield to the Knoll Ridge Cafe. At 2020 metres above sea level, you a great view of the mountain, and beyond (weather dependent of course!) Transport will be provided from the Chateau to the mountain. PRICE: $56 per person WALKS A range of walks from 20 minutes to 2 hours are on offer in the region for those interested in a more groundbased activitiy. TOKAANU THERMAL SPRINGS Located a few kilometres North-West of Turangi on SH41. Just off the main road in the tiny township of Tokaanu. Facilities available include; A large public chlorinated pool, heated to around 36 C 38 C. Private natural mineral pools, temperature ranges between 39 C - 41 C. Free Thermal Bushwalk, 20 minute walk in native bush, where you can see steaming hot mineral pools, set in sinter basins and spluttering mud pots. Wheelchair Accessible. SKIING / SNOWBOARDING WEATHER DEPENDENT - Whakapapa Ski Area on the north-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand s largest ski area. There is also night skiing on Friday.
