6 New Designated Anchorage Area Providing safe, reserved anchorage space for boats Port Moody s Designated Anchorage Area (DAA) pilot program will start in July 2016, providing boaters with a safe, reserved anchorage space in the inlet of Port Moody. No anchoring is allowed outside of the DAA, and boaters who want to stay overnight must register with the City for a DAA permit. They can anchor their vessel for up to 21 nights during a 40-day period. Up to 20 boats at a time will be permitted in the DAA. The City of Port Moody and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority initiated the DAA pilot project in response to community concerns about unauthorized long-term moorage, uninsured vessels, safety issues related to abandoned and improperly anchored boats, and dumping of sewage into the inlet. A $12 per night fee (plus GST) and a refundable $500 deposit are required, and boats that do not have a DAA permit are subject to enforcement and towing. Find the online DAA permit application form and related terms and conditions for use of the DAA at Capture free water and quench the thirst of plants this summer! Did you know that Port Moody residents can purchase a rain barrel from the City for $40? Rain barrels are an effective way to collect chlorine-free water for your lawn and garden, and other uses such as washing your car. Rain barrels are especially useful during peak summer months when water conservation is particularly important. To take advantage of our subsidized rain barrel program, visit the Finance counter on the main floor of City Hall (100 Newport Drive) and make your payment. Then, pick up your rain barrel at the City s Works Yard (3250 Murray Street) - you will need to show your receipt. For more information, and to check rain barrel stock availability, call Port Moody is doing a great job cleaning up its recycling! A quick reminder that the following should stay out of your recycling carts: Crinkly cellophane wrap, e.g. for tea, floral arrangements Kitchen stretch wrap or plastic wrap for meat, poultry, fish or cheese Zipper-lock bags Chip or snack bags Plastic shipping envelopes Bubble packaging Plastic bags of any kind plastic packaging, e.g. for bacon, deli meats, cheese slices Lumber or construction wrap Garbage bags (all colours). When these items are mixed in with other recyclables, they get stuck in sorting machines, and often end up as garbage. 7 beetle mania! Pick up Nematodes from a garden centre now! Port Moody residents can start to reclaim their lawns from the European Chafer beetle by ordering nematodes now from garden stores and landscaping professionals. Nematodes are tiny worms that live in the soil. When applied correctly, these worms kill Chafer beetles without harming plants, people or pets. You ll want to buy them now, and plan to apply them in late July. A healthy lawn is your best defence. If you have Chafer beetle damage, focus on these three lawn care tips right now: Fast facts on Nematodes & water sprinkling exemption permits: The City of Port Moody will grant one (1) temporary exemption from current watering restrictions free of charge for residents applying nematodes. To qualify, the applicant must show proof of nematode purchase at the second floor counter at City Hall, 100 Newport Dr. Applications can only be made in person. 6 cm The application is only valid for 21 days. Water your lawn according to the sprinkling restrictions for a total of about 2.5cm of water per week Water on and off for 30-minute intervals to avoid run-off and allow the water to soak in Keep grass at least 6 cm high, and leave the clippings on your lawn Even with this permit, applicants may only sprinkle between 4am and 9am, Monday to Sunday. Know your summertime sprinkling regulations In the summer and early fall our water use can double from the rest of the year for swimming pools, growing food, maintaining sports fields and other social and community-building uses. But a lot is also used to green our lawns, wash our decks or driveways and other lower-priority uses. The Metro Vancouver region-wide sprinkling regulations are an effective way to help us use our drinking water wisely. Sprinkling regulations are in effect May 15 to October 15 Residential Properties Even-numbered addresses Odd-numbered addresses 4am to 9am, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday 4am to 9am, Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday Gardening Tip!
