Join us for awesome demos, give-aways, snacks and prizes at this year s event focusing on pedestrian safety. Highlights include a driving simulator and fatal vision goggle sports. When: Friday, September 27, 2014 Where: Parking lot behind City Hall, 100 Newport Drive Maximizing the Moody Street Overpass On Saturday, April 19, 2014, one of Port Moody s busiest thoroughfares got a little bit more attention as Port Moody Council gathered to celebrate the opening of the new and improved Moody Street Overpass. Starting in September 2013, crews worked hard to improve and enhance this major part of Port Moody s road network. Their goal? Widen the sidewalk to increase safety and upgrade the bridge to meet improved seismic standards. Cyclists, pedestrians and wheelchair users win big with this new enhancement. The overpass sidewalk is a spacious 3.5 metres wide, and has a protected barrier, separating it from the roadway. We also enhanced access to the ever-popular Rocky Point Park by lengthening and widening the pathway from the bridge to Murray Street. The project was made possible thanks to funding from Translink and the Ministry of Transportation. Next steps for the City include the continued development of cycling and pedestrian networks as part of the Master Transportation Plan. In the meantime, enjoy safer connections and better access to Moody Centre, Inlet Centre and Rocky Point with the conclusion of this major roadway project / Summer
3 Summertime traffic calming projects & plans 1. Traffic calming on Ravine Drive, Parkside Drive and Noons Creek Drive After completing neighbourhood surveys and public consultation, the City now has detailed designs for traffic calming construction in these neighbourhoods. Our Engineering team is now in the process of awarding contracts for this work, which will start this summer and last for about two months. Expect local traffic impacts during the construction process. 2. Bus stop expansion near Port Moody secondary school on Clarke Street The bus stop widening project is underway and will be completed before the start of school in September. The project will provide a wider and safer bus stop waiting area, which was identified as too small to meet the demands of the transit riders at this location. The bus stop is temporarily relocated to the east side of the intersection on St Johns Street during construction. Look for a new shelter to be installed as part of this project. Guides highlight fun summer activities Planning a staycation in Port Moody this summer? There s so much to do in the City of the Arts! The 2014 edition of the Summer Cultural Guide is chock full with events and activities to keep you entertained during the summer. From festivals to film events, live music and art classes, there s something for all ages and areas of interest. If you love the great outdoors, Port Moody has lots of natural parks, trails and waterfront recreation areas for you to play, explore and enjoy. Public art is accessible in public spaces, ranging from buildings, to parks, walkways and greenspaces. While you re in the mood, why not explore the city s distinct heritage sites? These sites include properties, designated heritage sites, stone markers and heritage vinyl wraps (historical images wrapped around utility boxes). Use the separate heritage map that s also in the guide and enjoy your tour! You can also download the Summer Cultural Guide, Parks &Trail Guide and Port Moody Heritage and Public Art Guide on the City s website at 3. Ioco Road/Inlet Centre Paving Project In early 2014 the City assessed all the roads in Port Moody, looking at pavement condition and standards. The results led to the paving work recently completed on Ioco Road, between the Noons Creek Bridge and Murray Street. The work also included a small section of road on Guildford Way from Ungless Way to the hospital. This recent construction ensures the quality and lifespan of this important corridor for years to come. Additionally, when we painted new lines on Ioco Road, there was an opportunity to widen the inside lanes providing a designated shared lane for cyclists going both north and south bound. Understanding your 2014 property tax rate Property taxes are based on the assessed market value of a property which is established by the BC Assessment Authority as of July 1, Assessment is based on the physical condition of a property as at October 31, If your total tax bill increased more than 3.07%, it is likely due to your home s assessed value increasing more than the average amount. Contact BC Assessment Authority at for more information regarding the assessment of your property / Summer 3
4 Mossom Creek Hatchery returns! Since 1976, Port Moody s beautiful Mossom Creek has had stream stewards on its side. At first, they were the high school volunteers from the Centennial School Salmon Project, a club that operates to this day. Since 1992 the club has partnered with the Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society to restore salmon to Mossom Creek and other streams in Port Moody. Together the club and society built the Mossom Creek Hatchery in 1992 and its adjoining Education Centre was built in This facility became a much loved location for environmental learning experiences both formal and informal for all ages. It has served as the field site for unique high school fish and wildlife courses and the jumping off point for many students going on to environmental careers. Sadly, the hatchery burned to the ground last December 13. It was immediately determined that Mossom would be rebuilt. The kindness of the local community has been measured in emptied piggy banks, school bake sales, fundraisers, generous donations and countless offers of assistance. Here s just one example: Port Moody Council voted unanimously to allocate up to $10,000 to assist in the efforts to rebuild the Mossom Creek Hatchery, and provided a construction trailer to act as temporary headquarters. Sketch of Mossom Creek s new and improved facility. To learn more about the hatchery s rebuilding effots, go to Plans for the new hatchery include many sustainability features including an energy efficient and completely accessible design and a green roof. Salmon use the earth s magnetic field to navigate and return to their birth streams. Interference to this ability from normal reinforcing steel will be reduced by using non-magnetic building materials in the hatchery. Rearing tubs will be exposed to natural light and have windowed sections so that even the youngest of visitors can study the fry and smolts. A pond and wetland feature with a windowed viewing platform will provide habitat for frogs and other creatures and offer glimpses of life underwater. The new Mossom Creek Hatchery will serve the community well into the future, both as a salmon rearing facility and as a nature education centre with an excellent multi-purpose meeting space. If all goes well, it will be ready to receive chum and coho eggs this fall. Volunteers look forward to welcoming the community to the new and improved facility. Play a Round for Literacy Port Moody Public Library s popular Links to Literacy Golf tournament takes place on Tuesday, August 26th at Meadow Gardens Golf Course. Be a literacy champion! Join presenting sponsors Pacific Coast Terminals and Port Metro Vancouver for a fun day of golf, food and entertainment knowing that you are helping to build a legacy of literacy for your community. Proceeds from this year s tournament will support the establishment of a digital creation station in the Library. For more information, see or phone / Summer

Know your bear essentials Bears with access to garbage and other food sources, such as bird feeders, learn to become dependent on these rather than natural food sources. Dependence on unnatural food source can increase health and safety risks for both bears and humans. Managing attractants in your home and around the community is the number one way for you to help reduce potential bear-human conflicts and ensure the safe co-existence of bears and humans in Port Moody. Remember to lock your garbage and green waste carts with your bear-clip, and store them inside a secured area (e.g. garage, shed, or basement) between collections. It is also against City Bylaws to put out your carts before 5:30 am on the morning of collection. Finally, please ensure that any other attractants, such as bird feeders, fruits from fruit trees and compost bins, are either removed or inaccessible to bears and other wildlife. Sprinkle smartly this summer Did you know that most healthy lawns usually need only one hour of rain or sprinkling per week to stay green and lush? Often sprinklers are left on for much longer, which wastes valuable drinking water and is costly for all residents across our region. Port Moody has adopted sprinkling regulations to help reduce the amount of water lost and to conserve our valuable water resources. Demand for water is typically highest in the evenings, when most people prepare meals, wash dishes, do laundry, or take showers. Port Moody, along with many other communities in Metro Vancouver, has determined that morning sprinkling is best for both our water system and residential landscaping, since it lessens costly spikes in water consumption and delivers water to plants and lawns when they need it most. Our sprinkling regulations cut down on rapid increases in water consumption and overall demand on the water system. This eases electrical consumption and maintenance requirements at our water pumping stations across the City, which eases the annual cost of operating our water system. Sprinkling regulations are in effect in Port Moody from June 1 to September 30. Here s when you can sprinkle: Residential: Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle from 4-9am Mon, Wed, Sat Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle from 4-9am Tues, Thurs, Sun Non-residential: Even-numbered addresses may sprinkle from 1-6am Mon and Wed Odd-numbered addresses may sprinkle from 1-6am Tues and Thurs All non-residential addresses can also sprinkle 4-9am Fri Find more bear tips and water conservation tricks at / Summer 5

Why I adopted a street By Sheri DeVito, City of Port Moody Bylaw Officer I always considered Port Moody to be a pretty tidy town. Then I got a puppy! When I started bringing her on walks with me, I discovered that she needed to investigate every piece of trash that we encountered. It was during one really short walk that took a really long time that I realized that our tidy town really wasn t all that tidy. When I learned about the adopt-a-street program, I was very interested. I had seen advertising for this type of program in the United States before, but not in Port Moody. I signed up and chose David Avenue as it is pretty close to where we live, and a street I walk on quite frequently. I figured if I was already out walking, why not help out and pick up trash while I was at it. I enjoy doing it I get exercise, meet people, do something for the community and get quite a few thanks from people walking and driving by. I m just one person picking up garbage, but if everybody does something small like this, I think that together we can make a big impact! Sound up your alley? Contact our Adopt a Street Coordinator at or jowilliams@portmoody.ca. At the end of June eight groups had already adopted 25 blocks! 7 Port Moody celebrates Public Works Week Leafblowing with a twist! Despite the wet weather, over 200 kids from local schools got a behind-thescenes look at all the neat stuff our Public Works team does on a daily basis. This year s National Public Works Week ran from May 18 24, 2014 with celebrations and interactive community events taking place across BC, Canada, and North America. The theme Building for Today, Planning for Tomorrow represented the classic idea of stewardship embodied by the profession of public works and its practicing professionals. The City of Port Moody celebrated National Public Works Week by hosting hands-on interactive displays at two events. The first, a Public Works Day was designed for school aged kids, while the Community Open House engaged the community at large in celebrating the wonderful world of municipal public works. Approximately 200 children from local elementary and middle schools attended the Public Works Day. Although the weather was rainy and wet, spirits were high as staff did a tremendous job of connecting with the children through interactive displays, and explaining how Parks & Public Works makes Port Moody such a great community to live in. This year was also our first year hosting a Community Open House. We wanted to provide the community with a behind the scenes look at the many ways Parks & Public Works serves our community. Staff encouraged residents to explore our big trucks, take part in hands-on interactive displays, learn about City services and, most importantly, meet the people who make Port Moody tick. The event was a huge success attracting approximately 500 people who are all excited for next year s event! Want to know what construction Port Moody has planned over the summer?
