Pg 8.from our house to yours Milford Lions District 44N Community House Union Street Milford, NH ZONE 2 SPOT SCREENER TRAINING On Saturday March 7, 2015 approximately 25 Lion members from the Amherst, Brookline, Merrimack, Milford and Wilton clubs attended a meeting to get familiar with the new SPOT Screener. FVDG Scott Wilson and PDG Terri McGrew were on hand to go over the details, to answer questions and to allow an up-close hands on understanding of the screener with those present. From comments made, it was an informative and helpful meeting. However, some members are still a little tentative in the use of the new screener. As with any new process, the first step is always the most difficult. Once a screening is done, we will learn what, if anything, was done wrong and learn from our missteps. Hopefully, it is not as complex as it may seem to some. With that being said, if you are scheduled to do a screening in the near future, it may be beneficial to attend another club s screening to be present to see first hand how they conduct their screening. The club meets 6:30 pm every 1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month from September through June unless otherwise noted The Amherst Lions club will be holding their annual Pancake Breakfast at the Wilkins Elementary School, 80 Boston Post Road, Amherst on Sunday March 29 from 8:00 am to noon. During this breakfast, they will be conducting a public vision screening and will be using the new SPOT Screener. If you are interested in learning more about the screener, please don t hesitate to attend. Introduce yourself; I know that you will be more than welcome. 2 ...your Milford Lions Monthly Newsletter! WHERE S ED? ID Ed and Lion Elaine Farrington have been busy this month visiting Lions of District 13F in Columbus, Ohio. During their visit, they had the opportunity to tour the facility of the Pilot Dogs, Inc. The Pilot Dogs provides guide dogs for the blind; similar to Fidelco Dogs here on the east coast. They also visited the Lions of Missouri District 26M4 during their convention. (Photo on left) And the Milford Lions had the pleasure and the opportunity of having ID Ed and Lion Elaine visit and speak to our club during our St. Patrick s Day membership meeting. 3 ...your Milford Lions Monthly Newsletter! Scrabble Scrambler The first annual Milford Community Scrabble Scrambler was held on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at the Milford High School. It was a huge success raising over $1800 in net proceeds. Our commitment to the community is that these funds be used to support Literacy initiatives. (Part of the Lions International RAP). Lion Don Jalbert has not lost steam as yet and is already organizing a follow-up meeting scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Milford High School Library. He is looking for help to plan next year s tournament to do it even bigger and better. He has tentatively set Sunday, March 20, 2016 as the date for next year. Lion Don has set two agenda items to be discussed during the April 13th meeting: Agenda Item #1: Feedback from the 3/15 event and preparations and suggestions for 2016 event Agenda Item #2: Consideration for specific proposals for the expenditure of the funds that were raised from the 2015 event 44N Cabinet Meeting The 44N Cabinet Meeting originally scheduled for the same day as the Scrabble tournament was postponed due to inclement weather and was re-scheduled for Sunday, March 22, The Cabinet Meeting was attended by KL Ray Hill, Lions Sandy Hill, John and Rhonda Wynne. Various topics discussed included the SPOT Screener, Twin State Soccer program, the Peace Poster contest, Lions Training Forum, Lions Symposium, LSHF Brunch Cruise, the Spring Convention etc. You will find more information on these topics in your next issue of the ROAR newsletter. Community Supper The Community Spaghetti Supper was resumed after the building was closed for several months. Many, many members came to help along with several members from the Amherst Lions and the Brookline Lions. Thanks to all for the support which is always greatly appreciated. This was Lion Barb Stella s last Community Supper as she and Lion Joe will be leaving for Atlanta, Georgia early next week. KL Ray will be looking for assistance due to the Stella s move. Lion Barbara has been a stupendous help in organizing the suppers and she will be greatly missed by all. 3

4 ...your Milford Lions Monthly Newsletter! April Fools Day April Fools Day is celebrated every year on the first day of April as a day when people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other. The jokes and their victims are know as April fools. Hoax stories may be reported by the press and other media on this day and then later explained on subsequent days. As well as people playing pranks on one another on this day, elaborate practical jokes have appeared on radio, TV stations, newspapers, web sites, and have been performed by large corporations. With the advent of the internet and readily available global news, April Fool s pranks can catch and embarrass a much wider audience than ever before. The practice of April Fool pranks and hoaxes is controversial. The positive view is that it can be good for one s health because it encourages jokes, hoaxes, pranks, and belly laughs and brings all the benefits of laughter including stress relief and reducing strain. The negative view describes the day as creepy and manipulative, rude and a little bit nasty as well as being downright deceitful. When genuine news is published on April Fools Day it is occasionally misinterpreted as a joke. In any case there can be adverse effects causing confusion, misinformation, waste of resources even legal or commercial consequences. So on April 1st, be careful when you plan your joke, hoax or prank; it may be funny to you but could backfire and cause you in the end to be the fool. I found a copy of a ticket (photo below) in which you would be admitted along with a friend, to view the annual ceremony of Washing The Lions? Thought it was funny, were they talking about the animal or our fellow Lions of London? Hahaha, since it was from 1857, one would have to say it was the animal.. An 1857 ticket to "Washing the Lions" at the Tower of London in London. No such event ever took place. 4

Through the years, the club has been involved in completing numerous large projects for the benefit of the Milford community. A Skateboard Park at Keyes Field along with a Pavilion at the MCAA field on North River Road and most recent a community park known as Lions Park located off Route 13N. The Milford Lions strive to meet the needs of their community and to serve the community whenever the need exists. These projects were completed for the benefit of the community to be enjoyed now and for many years to come recognizing all the men and women who volunteer and dedicate their lives through community service. In addition to the service to the blind and the hearing impaired, Lions participate in service activities emphasizing on health, education and research, work with the physically and mentally impaired, environmental issues, community welfare, international understanding and our youth. To the Lions, We Serve is not only a motto, but a definition and a philosophy. No pessimist ever discovered the secret of the stars, or sailed to an uncharted land, or opened a new doorway for the human spirit.
