Milford Lions Club District 44-N New Hampshire Friend us on FACEBOOK Milford NH Lions Club MAY HIGHLIGHTS What a way to start off the month but with a Cash Raffle. The first weekend day of sales, May 3rd took place at the County Store. With the new modified Cash Raffle, one ticket for $5 for a chance to win $1000 (limited number of tickets) appeared to have appealed for the most part to the public. With the first attempt, we sold 91 tickets with some $$ donations. The second day of sales, May 17th at the Transfer Station brought in 131 tickets sold! With four more sale dates along with member s sales, it looks promising that we will meet our goal! The next scheduled sale date is Saturday, May 31st at the Shaw s Supermarket. There will be three in June; June 7th at the County Stores, June 14th at the Transfer Station and the final one is on June 15th back at Shaw s Supermarket. The drawing will take place on Tuesday, June 17th during the Installation meeting. (See schedule of June Events) On Saturday May 3rd, we held the club s second Zone Social with a celebration of our 55th year as a Lions club. Several club members and their spouses and friends from our zone attended, including our DG Sandra Hurd, DGE Melody Whitcher, and VDGE Bruce J. Trivellini and his wife Lion Marilyn. We had three wonderful performers singing music that brought us back to the 50 s, 60s, etc. There was lots of good food and drink and even some dancing. All in all, we had a great time. We even collected a few more items for the Time Capsule.
MILFORD CLUB MAY HIGHLIGHTS Sunday, May 4th there were a few members who helped out with the annual Souhegan Crop Hunger Walk. From left to right: Lions Herb Adam, Kevin Drew, Chuck Worcester, along with Susan Drew, Lions Barbara and Joe Stella and the man in the back with the blue cap and plaid shirt is a mystery? Does anyone recognize him? MELVIN JONES FELLOWSHIP On May 6, 2014, PCC Ed Farrington proudly presented this year s Melvin Jones to Lion Barbara Stella. Lion Barbara has been a member since 2005 and has served as secretary numerous times, as well as being recognized for all the service she has provided since she joined. She has served in many, many club projects and activities and is always ready to serve above and beyond. Many congratulations to Lion Barbara, very much deserved. A Vision Screening took place at the Jacques School on Thursday and Friday, May 8th and 9th. A hundred plus children were screened during the two days. Special thanks to: Lions Tricia Shea, Barbara Stella, Joe Stella and Ron Carvell for helping with this very important screening. We had use of the older camera for the screening so hopefully by next year, we will have access to the new SPOT screener and should be able to do a lot more with it by providing screenings to more in the community, from 6 months old and beyond.
MILFORD CLUB MAY HIGHLIGHTS On Saturday, May 10th we held our annual 55th Penny Sale at the high school. This is our biggest fundraiser, one in which we have been successfully holding since the inception of the club. We are grateful and appreciative and thankful to all the local businesses who donate to this sale. Many, many thanks to Lions Ed Farrington and to Paul Dargie for getting this organized. And special thanks to all the members who participated before, during and after the event. Without your help and support, this event would not be as successful as it is. Below L to R: Lions Rob Mikkelsen, Chuck Worcester, and Ernie Barrett 2014 Winner Boys Bike 2014 Winner Girls Bike Above, some of the attendees of the th Annual Penny Sale.
MILFORD CLUB MAY HIGHLIGHTS The weekend of May 16-18, 2014 brought Lions from all over District 44N to the Snowy Owl Inn & Resort in Waterville Valley for the 40th annual Spring Convention. An opportunity to meet with fellow Lions from various clubs within the district, to honor those who have given their time and efforts in serving their communities, their state, their country. Friday night began with a buffet-style dinner and a chance to get acquainted with the visiting ID Stephen Glass and his lovely wife PDG Cindy Glass of Bridgeport, WV. DG Sandra Hurd had an exciting and successful year as District Governor. She recognized many key people for her success, from (GMT Bonnie St. Jean) with her Give A Hoot new member campaign, all of her Zone Chairs who were successful in achieving the Silver Dream Achiever Awards that were earned by her Leadership Team (GLT Ed Farrington), followed by the first ever Women & Family Symposium titled Strengthening Our Community One Family At A Time chaired by Cabinet Chairperson Cheryl Ortega, to the result of conducting a Guiding Lion Training session (our own PCC Raymond Hill), wherein there are now six additional Guiding Lions in the district to assist with struggling clubs. And last but not least, the formation, a first time ever, of a new Lions Club in the New Boston/MT Vernon area (with sponsoring Goffstown Lions), along with reforming the Jaffrey Club (with sponsoring Souhegan Lions). Left to right: 2nd Vice DG, Bruce Trivellini PCC Ed Farrington DG Sandra Hurd 1st Vice DG, Melody Whitcher 2nd Vice DGE Christine Greenwood 40th Spring Convention Snowy Owl Inn & Resort, Waterville Valley, NH May 16-18, 2014
MILFORD CLUB (continued from pg 5) MAY HIGHLIGHTS Saturday morning began with a memorial service celebrating the lives of our departed Lions. It was a lovely service; humbling and respectful of all those to be remembered and celebrated for their service and contribution in life as a Lion. The service was followed by the district meeting wherein, 1st VDG Melody Whitcher, 2nd Vice District Governor Bruce J Trivellini, and Christine Greenwood were nominated elect. We are all looking forward to the International Convention in Toronto, wherein, VDGE Melody will become District Governor, 2nd VDGE Bruce will become 1st Vice District Governor and Christine Greenwood moves into the 2nd Vice District Governor s position. Perhaps even, Milford Lion s own, PCC Ed Farrington becomes the next International Director for New England! Lunch was followed by free time with an Ice Cream Social outside on the patio as the rainy weather from the day before had cleared to sunnier skies and warmer temps. To end the day, a banquet of great food, a motivating speech from ID Stephen Glass, an overwhelming amount of awards, gifts and praises presented from DG Sandra summed up a great convention and a great year for District 44N.
MILFORD CLUB MAY HIGHLIGHTS Brookline, Merrimack and Milford Lions May 20, 2014 Lions Tricia Shea and Joe Stella Left to right: PCC Ed Farrington, Lions Elaine Farrington and John Wynne, Background: Lion Lisa Lozeau One of the best meetings of the year perhaps is the meeting in May. Where our club celebrates with neighboring clubs such as the Brookline and Merrimack clubs. We began this meeting with visiting clubs a few years back on the first meeting of the month which usually fell around the 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo) but this year we moved it to the second meeting of the month due to some other conflicts. But you know what? It didn t matter as the theme continued with the Mexican fiesta and we were visited by an overwhelming amount of Lions from the two clubs including VDGE Melody Whitcher and newest member from the Manchester club Ann O Rourke. We were ecstatic and delighted that they all joined us as we all had a great time! Also appearing and attending our meeting was our fellow traveling Lion, George Congdon. Lion George and his wife Marcia spend the winters out in Arizona. They have motored back to the East and we were glad to see George and happy that he was able to join us for this fun meeting. VDGE Melody Whitcher anxiously awaiting to hear the winning number for the 50/50 Raffle drawing Many thanks to those who prepared the feast and to our Margarita Queen Lion Elaine Farrington. Unfortunately, for some, we had no room for a piñata or dancing but there is always next year! And, do you know what else? Next year s meeting actually falls on Tuesday, May 5th Cinco de Mayo! David Palance, Historical Society presentation May 20, 2014 And special thanks to David Palance of the Historical Society for his interesting presentation on time capsules. We learned a lot from him and will use his experience and expertise in our decision for the club s time capsule burial and recovery period.

MILFORD CLUB In honor of those who have fallen, Remembered on this MEMORIAL DAY MAY 26, 2014
MILFORD CLUB The Milford Lions Club was established February 3, The club will be beginning their 55th year of service to the community. The club constructed a park located off Route 13N, within the Hartshorn Pond area now dedicated as Lions Park. We, as a club, are dedicated to keeping great care of this wonderful park so that it can be enjoyed by the community for many years and will be kept to serve as a reminder to all the men and women who volunteer their lives to community service. In addition to the service to the blind and the hearing impaired, Lions participate in service activities emphasizing on diabetes awareness, education and research, work with the physically and mentally impaired, environmental issues, community welfare, international understanding and our youth. To the Lions, We Serve is not only a motto, but a definition and a philosophy. No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars, or sailed to an unchartered land, or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.
