2 OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS (continued) MILFORD S 25th ANNUAL PUMPKIN FESTIVAL The Milford Lions once again provided a food concession during the recent 25th anniversary of the annual Milford Pumpkin Festival which took place during the weekend of October 10 12, Left: Lion Tricia Shea helping a customer make a selection at the concession booth. Below: Many, many pumpkins brought in for Milford s 25th Pumpkin Festival held Oct 10-12, Above photo courtesy of Lion Paul Dargie. After a few hours of some clouds, rain and mist, the morning soon cleared up and brought several hundreds of attendees to the festival. All in all, the weekend was quite successful. Many thanks to all who volunteered their time and service. We look forward to next year!
3 OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS (continued) COMMUNITY SUPPER After many months of renovation and construction to the new SHARE building, the building is now ready and the Community Suppers were resumed this month. Our first supper was held on October 28th with about 85 attending. Thanks to Lions Ray Hill and Barbara Stella for coordinating and getting us back on track. Many thanks also to all who came and volunteered their time and service. Without your help, we would not be able to provide this much needed meal. We will be returning in 2015 starting in January with the next supper as the SHARE hall be needed for their upcoming holiday preparations until then. NH WARMTH DRIVE As mentioned in the August newsletter, NH Lions Youth Services has turned their NH Warmth Drive into an all year round clothing drive to address the needs of our neighbors and children. Articles of new and gently-used adult or children s clothing that you donate to local organizations and agencies throughout NH. For example, donations to SHARE, to Goodwill or even donation boxes found in parking lots throughout communities. Here s what was asked that you could do to help. Clear out those closets and those storage bins that you keep saving year after year! collect the items to donate, take a count of the number of items you are donating, and then let ME know how many items you have to donate. I do not need to know what you are donating. I just need to know the NUMBER OF ITEMS. Final step; drop off your items at one of the donation locations listed above. It s that easy! I will keep a record of the number of items donated and report it monthly. Thank you so much for taking the time to make a difference! To date, I have a total of (111) items donated..did you make a donation and forgot to tell ME?
4 OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS (continued) HALLOWEEN By the time you read this, Halloween will be over but All Saints Day will be upon us. Halloween is the one of the oldest holidays still celebrated today. It s one of the most popular holidays, second only to Christmas. While millions of people celebrate Halloween without knowing its origins and myths, the history and facts of Halloween make the holiday more fascinating. Halloween is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Halloween was referred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago. All Hallows Eve is the evening before All Saints Day, which was created by Christians to convert pagans, and is celebrated on November 1st. The Catholic church honored saints on this designated day. Traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe, roots lay in the feast of Samhain (pronounced Sow-en) to honor the dead. Samhain signifies summers end or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning a new one. The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure the next year s crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating. Some people view Halloween as a time for fun, putting on costumes, trick-or-treating and having parties. Others view it as a time of superstitions, ghosts, goblins and evil spirits that should be avoided at all costs. Turnips or rutabagas were carved as depicted in the photo on the right prior to using pumpkins as we use today. While at the Community Supper the other night as I was decorating the table, an elderly woman came up to me and told me that she did not like Halloween, never cared for it. I asked her why, she replied, very seriously, that it was a night that she was afraid of and as a child she was always scared despite the treats and the coaxing of her friends. She would often fake being ill so she could go to bed and hide beneath her covers until she fell fast asleep. Does Halloween frighten you a little now that you know its history or do you think it s just hocus-pocus? HAPPY HALLOWEEN..
