1 Serendipity Summer newsletter 2017 BUMPER SUMMER EDITION It was with great sadness that the Phillip Island RSL Committee, Management and Staff mourn the passing of their esteemed President, Tom Mallaghan, on 23rd October at 9pm. We are devastated at the loss of Tom but treasure his achievements in his capacity of President of our Club. Tom was a Service member, having entered the Royal Australian Navy at the age of 16 and saw active service in the Vietnam war. He served on HMAS Leeuwin, Penguin, Sydney, Cerberus and Albatross across 12 years. Tom has been a long time resident on Phillip Island for close to 30 years. He married his wife Gailene in the back yard of his home in Cape Woolamai 25 years ago. He was a member of the San Remo SES until he got lung cancer 11 years ago and was forced to give up heavy duties. He was an active member of the Phillip Island golf club and was one of the founding members of the Dirty Dozen golf team since 2002 where he became a life member. He loved his fishing he had 2 boats but lost one from its mooring off Rhyll which ended up on the San Remo coastline. Remnants can still be seen at low tide. Overnight fishing with Gailene was one of his favourite past times. Tom will be sadly missed by all at Phillip Island RSL but will be remembered as a warm, fun, loyal and visionary leader. 2 Remembrance Day A sunny, warm Saturday morning greeted those who attended the 2017 Remembrance Day service at the Cowes Cenotaph on 11th November convened by Acting President, Peter Paul and fellow committee members. RSL Life member, Roy Gunn laid a wreath on behalf of Phillip Island RSL. Other wreath layers were the Mayor, Cr. Pam Rothfield, Mick O'Keeffe on behalf of Greg Hunt MP, Grossard Court and the Lions Club. Record breaking poppy sales A huge thank you to our local community and visitors for helping us achieve the record breaking $15,000 earned through the sale of commemorative poppies pre Remembrance Day. This is $3,000 more than last year, and poppy co ordinator Michael Curwood said: it s an outstanding result and on behalf of the committee, we thank our team of 115 volunteers who helped make this happen. Funds from poppy sales assist in funding a variety of support programs for our veterans. Michael said. 2

9 Welfare Services Update RSL Chaplain The Phillip Island RSL is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Amy Turner as our new Chaplain. We look forward to working with Amy in the coming years. I grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. I was married at 21 years and have two daughters both of whom are in their thirties. In my late twenties I commenced theological study at Ridley Theological College, having sensed a call to serve as a Minister of Religion. I have been an ordained minister in the Anglican Church for thirty-one years and served in the parishes of Croydon South, Toorak, Croydon Hills, Beaumaris, and Drouin. My husband served for 17 years in the RAAF as a Reservist (21 Squadron City of Melbourne) until his death. I have been connected to the RSL for many years firstly at Ringwood Sub Branch, then Beaumaris, Drouin and Inverloch. I have now returned from full-time ministry and when invited serve as a Locum-Priest where there is need. I have for six years served as a volunteer Victoria Police Chaplain caring for our police members in the local area. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with people, walking, good books, holiday travel, good music, and walks on the beach. I appreciate the recent opportunity to connect with the Phillip Island RSL Sub Branch. Volunteer Management Two volunteer first aid training sessions were held at Phillip Island RSL on 18th October where 17 volunteers took part updating their skills. The end of year volunteer Christmas thank you event is on 6th December. This year, volunteers are being treated to a three hour Wildlife Cruises tour from Rhyll to Cape Woolamai. Portsea Camp Eight application forms have been received for children attending the camp in early There are two children attending each from Cowes Primary School, San Remo Primary School, Newhaven Primary School and for the first time, Newhaven College. Community grants Seven local community groups benefited recently from community grants provided by Phillip Island RSL which will result in the following projects being funded. These projects will benefit a cross section of our local community in a number of different ways. The funds will allow Cowes Yacht Club to purchase two new Opti training dinghies which will be available for young people specifically in the age group of 7 to 12 years over the summer period. Phillip Island Soccer Club Phillip Island Soccer Club is the fastest growing soccer club in the league within South Gippsland and replacing soccer balls is a constant activity, so their funding will enable the Club to purchase plenty of balls for their Under 11 players. The Phillip Island District Cricket Club The Rhyll cricket ground is well over 100 years old and has fallen into disrepair over the years. Cricketers complain that it feels like playing on concrete in summer. The Phillip Island District Cricket Club have a program to reinvigorate the ground by installing a watering and drainage system at the Rhyll Cricket Club. Bass Valley Friends of the RSL One hundred and twenty people from the Bass Valley area went to WWII including a nurse from French Island. To commemorate these people, Bass Valley Friends of the RSL will add a memorial plaque honouring them on the memorial wall at Grantville. Phillip Island Fire Brigade Phillip Island Fire Brigade will be able to construct a new shed required to house the 1967 Austin Small Town Tanker which was donated to the Brigade as part of its 80th birthday celebrations. This tanker is currently being restored by members which will 9

10 eventually be used for public relations activities helping the Brigade to raise essential funds. Artist s Society of Phillip Island Artist s Society of Phillip Island are producing a one off project as part of the 150th celebrations in 2018 which will be a prestigious, major award as part of their Easter Exhibition. The award will celebrate Phillip Island s history through the creation of portraits of Phillip Island community members. The National Vietnam Veterans Museum The National Vietnam Veterans Museum s ultimate aim is to collect all Vietnam War memorabilia and artefacts and currently have 25,000 at the Museum. The funding will allow the Museum to acquire, prepare and transport a Kiowa Helicopter A from Oakley Queensland by December which will complete the aviation collection. Phillip Island RSL Community Grants are available to local clubs and organisations located on Phillip Island/San Remo area with applications open from 1st July Men s Shed During the past month, there have been three new members join the Shed community. The total number of active members is now thirty three. We continue to have high attendances at each of the weekly sessions. Projects recently completed or underway include the restoration of a school desk, repairing and sanding two lounge chairs, reducing the size of a dining table, restoring two church pews, manufacturing a mailbox, door stops and chopping boards and constructing a work bench for a community member, completion of a number of bird boxes and as usual some members are involved with their own projects. On Saturday 4th November 2017 the Shed conducted an Open Day for members of the community to visit the Shed. While the attendance was modest it was a success in so far it provided the opportunity for the general public to inspect/view the Shed, engage with members, enjoy a sausage and purchase sale items. Members of the Shed participated in a BBQ after the normal session on Tuesday 14th November; these events are becoming more regular and provide members with the opportunity to get to know one another at a social level. The Men s Shed Christmas lunch will be held on 14th December at the Lone Pine Bistro. The Shed will close on Thursday 14th December 2017 and reopen Tuesday 23rd January CONTACT DETAILS: Terry Heffernan mensshed@pirsl.com.au or the PIRSL
