1 Serendipity Winter newsletter 2017 Hats off to our volunteers In recognition of National Volunteers Week, Phillip Island RSL Committee and Management extend their sincere thanks to its loyal team of volunteers who undertake a wide range of welfare activities for veterans and members of our local community. Phillip Island RSL has a number of community projects that are assisted by volunteers. The medical transport team volunteer their time driving veterans and their families to doctor and specialist appointments both on and off the Island. Last year, a total of 176 trips were made. Breakfast Club team The Phillip Island RSL Breakfast Club team have been getting up early each Wednesday morning for over nine years between May and December, preparing a healthy breakfast for up to 500 school children at the Cowes Primary School. On the menu is freshly cut fruit, fruit juice, milk and toast with vegemite or jam. There can be anything from 27 to 33 loaves of bread and 50 muffins being toasted which are kindly donated by local business. ANZAC badge sellers Husband and wife team, Michael and Sue Curwood and their dedicated team of ANZAC badge sellers, worked around the clock in the ten days leading up to ANZAC Day all of whose efforts raised over $21,000 a record breaking result - which will provide welfare assistance to veterans and their families. Member s General meeting Sunday 25th June at 10:30am in the ANZAC room. Contact Chris Thompson, Secretary, Phillip Island RSL on Continue over... 2 Hats off to our volunteers Committee member, Terry Heffernan has been co-ordinating activities at the Phillip Island RSL Community Men's Shed, for seven years. The Men s Shed provide men, particularly retired men, the opportunity of coming together to participate in a wide and diverse range of community projects. The men offer a diverse range of skills and individual knowledge that they are happy to share with others. With many people downsizing as they grow older, the Shed offers them the opportunity to continue their hobby or pass on their skills whilst combatting social isolation. In addition to these teams, the Phillip Island RSL appreciates the loyal support given by other volunteers who help co-ordinate the Islanders Day Club, Friday night raffles, sporting clubs, Legacy and collating memorabilia and books. Volunteer, John Laver, has teamed up with Bruce Shelton, Phillip Island s memorabilia co-ordinator, to assist with a number of activities including setting up displays, cataloguing and documenting the extensive memorabilia and library. John has been a member of the RSL for over 16 years and was originally a member of the Victorian Lighthorse Regiment an auxiliary unit attached to the 1st Armour at Puckapunyal before it was transferred to Darwin over 20 years ago. It was a labour of love as John was an avid horse lover and keen to keep the Light Horse tradition going attending many parades and ANZAC Day events. John is pictured here with Sandy the Lighthorse located in the Phillip Island RSL s member s entrance, which he and Bruce meticulously put together with original tack and even John s Lighthorse hat! Sandy is the only Lighthorse who successfully made it back by ship from Gallipoli. You can read more about Sandy s adventures next time you visit. It s all about helping to keep what the RSL does, functioning on an ongoing basis. Many of the members are aging and unable to continue volunteering, so in my opinion, I think as a member, it s time to step up and assist wherever possible. I get a lot out of volunteering and helping the RSL s various community activities, which also includes being a member of the Breakfast Club. If you enjoy it, it s not hard to do and it s a nice thing to be able to give back to our community John said. If you are interested to get involved with any of these activities, please visit www. phillipislandrsl.com.au/community or contact Welfare Services during business hours on
3 ANZAC Day Thank you! The Phillip Island RSL Committee and Management thank our local community and visitors for attending ANZAC Day commemorative services and supporting the RSL by purchasing ANZAC badges. A record breaking amount of over $21,000 was raised which will go towards the welfare of veterans - an outstanding effort by our volunteer badge sellers and the community. Sincere thanks to our hardworking volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly beforehand and on the day, together with, Bass Coast Shire Council, HMAS Cerberus, Event Operations Group, Production Corporation, Paul Cooper, Kelly Foster, RJ Houston, Shadow Protection, Production Resource Group and Over the Top Events who made the event the success it was. And finally, thank you to the Phillip Island CFA, SES, Police, Girl Guides, Scouts & Cubs, School Captains and bugalist from Newhaven College, Newhaven College Andrew Foon - Middle School Choir, student leaders from Wonthaggi Secondary College, San Remo & Phillip Island Rotary Club, St. John's Ambulance, Victorian Military Vehicles Corp and John Ackers who all braved the wet conditions in order to make the event it was and thanks to Silverwater Resort and Coles Cowes for their donation. PIRSL ANZAC Community Award winner Helen has lived locally all of her life, being a descendant of a Phillip Island pioneering family. After operating a travel business in Cowes for many years, upon retirement has given tirelessly of her time to many local organizations. Helen is an unsung community volunteer in Cowes, working on committees which enriched the community over the past five decades. In her youth she was a member of the Woolamai Beach Surf Lifesaving Club, the Phillip Island Football Netball Club and Tennis Club. Whilst her children were growing up, she was a member of the Newhaven Primary School Parents Association including a number of years as President. She was also a member of the Warley Hospital Board of Management for many years. Helen was the founder and coordinator of the Rotary Op Shop in Cowes, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years. Helen has also co-ordinated the Phillip Island Good Friday Appeal for the past twenty years. This is a year round task with collection tins distributed throughout the year, and co-ordinating all the volunteers. Whilst Helen has totally committed herself to the community and community work, she has been ably assisted by her husband Reg. Helen is a most worthy recipient of the 2017 Phillip Island RSL ANZAC Community Award. Congratulations Helen. 3
