In Memoriam Our loving thoughts of support go to Lone White, long-time CAS member and indefatigable supporter of local arts, for the recent passing of her husband Bill. The artist is the opposite of the politically minded individual, the opposite of the reformer, the opposite of the idealist. The artist does not tinker with the universe, he recreates it out of his own experience and understanding of life. Henry Miller

2014 ENTRIES ARE OPEN $15,000 SWELL SCULPTURE AWARD Artists are invited to submit entries for the 12th annual Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach, Queensland 12-21 September 2014.

The free to the public exhibition attracts visitation of around 190,000 over 10 days. We were pleased to announce in 2013 that the top award was the $15,000 Swell Sculpture Award (nonacquisitive).

2 2014 ENTRIES ARE OPEN $15,000 SWELL SCULPTURE AWARD Artists are invited to submit entries for the 12th annual Swell Sculpture Festival at Currumbin Beach, Queensland September Exhibiting up to 55 sculptures, Swell Sculpture Festival supports full freedom of expression for all forms of sculpture and encourage submissions with entry open to all artists nationally and internationally, working in any medium. Swell Sculpture Festival provides artists with the opportunity to exhibit in a highly regarded exhibition set within a visually stimulating, expansive coastal landscape. Kate s Coral Reef earrings Kuranda jewellery maker, Kate Prynne has developed a specific range the range of earrings using metal that has been patinated. Kate calls them her 'Coral Reef' series as they look like the reef when you look down on it with the darks of the reef and the aqua shades of the sandy areas. These beautiful wearable artworks are available at the Co-op Gallery. 4

Media release Artist needed for city centre signature piece Artists are encouraged to think beyond the traditional fish and coral motifs to develop a public art piece to take pride of place in the

Cairns Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest from Queensland artists to create the art work to be located on the corner of Lake and Aplin streets in the Cairns Central Library park.

We have chosen the Great Barrier Reef as the theme of the piece, to tie in with street scaping and furnishings, including the new bus stations that will feature the reef and rainforest.

7 Media release Artist needed for city centre signature piece Artists are encouraged to think beyond the traditional fish and coral motifs to develop a public art piece to take pride of place in the rejuvenated city centre. Cairns Regional Council is calling for expressions of interest from Queensland artists to create the art work to be located on the corner of Lake and Aplin streets in the Cairns Central Library park. This piece will provide a real statement at the entry to the city centre and therefore has to reflect our way of life and where we live, said Acting Cairns Mayor Cr Terry James. We have chosen the Great Barrier Reef as the theme of the piece, to tie in with street scaping and furnishings, including the new bus stations that will feature the reef and rainforest. This piece will be a highly visible focal point of the new-look city centre and as such must make an impact. I urge artists to look beyond traditional reef themes to develop a signature piece that packs a punch. Council s Public Arts Advisory Committee will coordinate the two-stage application process. Artists have until Tuesday 18 March to answer stage one criteria with a shortlist of proposals to be determined by 31 March. The final artwork is anticipated to be in place by Friday 29 August.
