1 2018 INTERPROVINCIAL AIR TOUR PILOT BRIEFING Flight Itinerary Contacts: Page 1 Nav Canada Flight Service Contacts: Lee Arsenault Marilyn Staig Jeff Page Quebec FIC (Quebec) London FIC (Ontario) En Route Frequency (Position reports) Pilot Air-Air Frequency ROUTE Thursday Friday Saturday Saturday Saturday Saturday Sunday CNJ4 Orillia CNJ4 CRL2 CYS4 CSD4 CST3 Orillia Westport St. Donat Mont-Laurier St. Lazare 133nm 45nm X 2 106nm X 2 77nm X 2 95nm X 2 AS PIC YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE Weather decisions Flight planning NOTAMs Pilot briefings are mandatory and will help provide you with the necessary information The information provided here is supplementary only and NOT TO BE USED FOR NAVIGATION. AIR TOUR This is a VFR tour. The Air Tour organizers have done their best to make this Tour enjoyable for all and is designed to be a VFR event. Alternate arrangements will be made if VFR flights are ill advised. If weather conditions dictate a change in plans, options will be discussed at the daily weather briefings. Regardless of decisions that others are making, remember YOU are the pilot in command of your aircraft and you make you own decisions. RADIO En Route Frequency Position reports Cessna Alpha Bravo Charlie is 30 north of Westport To inform IPAT aircraft (especially when overtaking visual separation) To inform non-participating aircraft Monitor during flight, when not using ATC for flight following Pilot Air To Air Avoid chatter on Use for conversation Be Concise At Airports Registrations only required when contacting UNICOM Blue high wing, 5 east, 2000 feet White Cessna, downwind 32, behind Bonanza Transponder Required in Class C and above 6500' within 65nm of Ottawa.
2 2018 INTERPROVINCIAL AIR TOUR PILOT BRIEFING Page 2 SAFETY The is a VFR tour, mostly in uncontrolled airspace. It is very important that you fly safely, and in particular, watch out the window for other aircraft. It is important that we make position reports, indicating prominent landmarks, so nonair Tour pilots will know where we are. FLIGHT ITINERARIES Flight Itineraries are assumed with the Tour for the flight from Orillia to. The arrival of each aircraft on the registration list will be confirmed at. If you fail to arrive we will notify Search and Rescue. Therefore, it is very important to let one of the organizers know if you will be deviating in any way from the plan. Please speak directly to an organizer, rather than assuming a text message arrived and was read. The Air Tour starts at Orillia and ends at. Follow your normal flight planning procedures and file your own flight plan flying to Orillia and home from. If you are leaving Friday morning from an airport other than Orillia, file your own flight plan. BUDDY SYSTEM Pilots are strongly suggested to have a buddy airplane who you keep up to date with your plans. Your buddy should know that you departed and have an idea when you should arrive and should notify one of the organizers if you fail to do so. This is especially important for Saturday fly outs. The organizers are not providing flight itineraries on Saturday. Either use the buddy system, or file a VFR Flight Plan. FLIGHT SERVICE Some of the Saturday fly out destinations are in Quebec. If you call to file or close a flight plan, or to get a weather briefing, the system will select an FIC based on your caller id, which will likely incorrectly give you London while you are in Quebec. The direct dial numbers are at the top of the first page. If you fly from to St. Lazare, you will call London FIC to get a weather briefing and file a flight plan. On landing, you will call Quebec FIC to close your flight plan. On your return flight, you will file with Quebec FIC while in St. Lazare and then close with London FIC when you return to. EN ROUTE The airports on this year's tour are close together, so aircraft will not tend to spread apart as much as usual. En route, stay well clear when passing an aircraft ahead and notify them on Make a note of other aircraft near you and maintain situational awareness. Near airports, stay in line and follow the aircraft ahead. Go around and re-join if there is inadequate spacing. CIRCUITS Follow standard Canadian circuit joining procedures (see diagram). Stay in line. Follow the aircraft ahead. Leave adequate spacing in the circuit between you and the aircraft ahead. At some airports, aircraft may have to backtrack to exit the runway. Do not slow too much trying to increase spacing and stall! Go around if necessary and re-join. Aircraft tend to arrive in packs. If you return in 5 minutes, you may have the circuit to yourself. PARKING Most aircraft will be tying down in grass. You must bring your own tie down stakes, ropes and wheel chocks. Some aircraft are heavy or are unable to park on grass due to prop clearance. Airports have limited space on the apron, usually without tie down rings, so you should bring chocks for each main wheel. There will be ground marshalling at Orillia and. Tell them if you need to park on the apron. Follow their instructions.
3 2018 INTERPROVINCIAL AIR TOUR PILOT BRIEFING Page 3 SURVIVAL GEAR We will be flying over some rugged terrain. It is recommended that you review what survival equipment you will carry. Although will will alert Search and Rescue promptly, it may still take quite a while to find you if your aircraft is under a canopy of trees. Please be prepared. A tracking device such as a Spot could be very helpful! Aircraft using the runway fly 1000' circuits. Float planes landing on the lake do circuits to the west of the lake at 800'. Grass parking will primarily be alongside the grass runway 04/22. There are also 11 grass spots along the main taxiway. There is some asphalt parking on the apron. Float plane parking is at the docks. There will be marshals to direct you to parking. For apron parking, or if you require fuel, plan to exit at the taxiway and follow the red line to the ramp. If you are grass parking and do not require fuel, if safely able, exit at the intersection and follow the yellow line. Fuel is a card lock system on the apron and there will be someone there to assist both on arrival Thursday and departure Friday. Price is $1.85 HST included. Page 4
