Challenge for the Simulator portion of the event get out of the plane and into the Control Tower BACKGROUND INFORMATION RUNWAY SELECTION Assign the operationally suitable runway most nearly aligned into the wind if the wind speed is 5 knots or more. You may assign the calm wind runway provided: (N) A. the wind speed is less than 5 knots; and B. you clearly indicate the wind direction and speed to the aircraft. You may suggest, or approve a request for, another runway provided: A. you or the aircraft will gain an operational advantage; and B. you clearly indicate the wind direction and speed to the aircraft. A calm wind runway is one that offers an operational advantage because of: A. length; B. better approach; C. shorter taxiing distance; D. noise abatement procedures; E. necessity to avoid flight over populated areas; or F. other reasons. April 5,

TAXI INFORMATION Hint have to know the airport layout like the back of your hand TURN NOW or TURN LEFT/RIGHT. CONTINUE or CONTINUE TAXIING. TAXI ON RUNWAY/TAXIWAY (number) CROSS RUNWAY (number). 4 Do not authorize airport traffic to use an airport or any part of an airport that is closed by the Airport Operator. (N) WESTJET 371, UNABLE CLEARANCE. RUNWAY ZERO SEVEN IS CLOSED FOR MAINTENANCE UNTIL 1900 ZULU AS PER NOTAM. ADVISE INTENTIONS. The Airport Operator is responsible for closing an airport or any part of an airport s infrastructure or manoeuvring area. Although the lack of airport ARFF services will affect certain aircraft operations, it does not constitute grounds for denial of clearance by controllers. April 5,

RONLY AND NORDO (Receiver Only) (No Radio) You may request a RONLY aircraft to acknowledge a transmission in one of the following ways: A. to aircraft on the ground: 1. by moving the ailerons; or (P) 2. by moving the rudder; (P) ACKNOWLEDGE BY MOVING AILERONS. ACKNOWLEDGE BY MOVING RUDDER. B. to aircraft in the air, by rocking the wings; (P) ACKNOWLEDGE BY ROCKING WINGS. C. at night, to aircraft on the ground or in the air, by a single flash of landing lights. ACKNOWLEDGE BY A SINGLE FLASH OF LANDING LIGHTS. April 5,

NORDO (No Radio) Boring when you cannot talk to anyone April 5,

CONTACT TOWER (frequency) NOW/AT (location/time)/ HOLDING SHORT or MONITOR TOWER (frequency) NOW/AT (location/time) To cross more than one runway or taxiway while taxiing towards the departure runway TAXI VIA BRAVO, DELTA, CROSS RUNWAY 28 AND RUNWAY 33. To an intermediate point TAXI VIA ECHO AND FOXTROT, HOLD SHORT OF RUNWAY 28. To a departure runway or an intermediate point, while yielding right of way to an identified aircraft or vehicle at a specified position TAXI VIA ECHO AND FOXTROT, GIVE WAY TO (description and position of other aircraft or vehicle) (other pertinent information). To resume taxiing CONTINUE TAXI ACROSS RUNWAY 28 AND GOLF. April 5,

TAKE-OFF PROCEDURES LINE UP (if no delay anticipated). LINE UP AND WAIT (reason for delay if not apparent). WAIT (reason for delay). (If it becomes necessary to delay take off clearance after line up). Delays may be caused by preceding landing/departing traffic, IFR delays or CRDA positioning. Example: LINE UP AND WAIT, TWO MINUTE IFR DELAY. BACKTRACK RUNWAY (number) TO LINE UP AND WAIT, TRAFFIC LANDING RUNWAY (number). LINE UP RUNWAY (number). BACKTRACK AND LINE UP RUNWAY (number). or LINE UP RUNWAY (number) BACKTRACK APPROVED. April 5,

DEPARTURES TRAFFIC (aircraft type) TURNING (left/right). CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY (number). FLY HEADING (number) and if an altitude restriction is required CLIMB TO (altitude). Example: GOLF CHARLIE ROMEO FOXTROT, TRAFFIC IS A DASH 8 IN A LEFT TURN, CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY 27. TRAFFIC (details as required) (if required CAUTION, POSSIBLE WAKE TURBULENCE), CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF RUNWAY (number). CLEARED FOR IMMEDIATE TAKEOFF RUNWAY (number) IF UNABLE, HOLD SHORT OF RUNWAY. ARE YOU ABLE AN IMMEDIATE DEPARTURE? if pilot able, then CLEARED FOR IMMEDIATE TAKEOFF RUNWAY (number). LINE UP (location, if not the threshold), BE READY FOR IMMEDIATE DEPARTURE. April 5,

(aircraft identification) LEFT/RIGHT TURN OUT, CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF RUNWAY (number). CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF RUNWAY (number) - or - FROM (name of taxiway, runway intersection or threshold), CLEARED FOR TAKE-OFF RUNWAY (number). CLEARED FOR THE OPTION RUNWAY (number). (Normally this clearance is used during light traffic conditions.) A take-off clearance is normally issued on a tower frequency published in the Canada Air Pilot for that unit. Use caution when issuing turn out instructions to an aircraft that has not already lined up for an intersection departure as the aircraft could mistake the turn instruction for the line up direction. In such cases, the phrase AFTER DEPARTURE may be inserted between the turn instruction and the intersection name in order to prevent confusion. Example: DELTA TANGO MIKE, RIGHT TURN OUT AFTER DEPARTURE, FROM BRAVO CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF RUNWAY TWO SEVEN. (Inform a departing aircraft of the reason for a delay and the type and position of the preceding departing aircraft) NEGATIVE, HOLD SHORT WAKE TURBULENCE (type and position of wake-creating aircraft); or LINE UP AND WAIT, WAKE TURBULENCE, (type and position of wake-creating aircraft).
