1 THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON WOMEN S CLUB Peggy Walchalk / Carrie Tomko, Editors / August / September 2014 Save the Date: Fall General Meeting Please join us for a unique performance by the German Choir. Brought to us by Gerhard Kunze, professor emeritus from the geology department at The University of Akron. The German Choir is a unique group of immigrants who formed singing societies all over the United States and the Arion Singing Society, named after the Greek poet and musician Arion. The group was founded in 1894 in Canton, Ohio. The Arion Singing Society has currently 19 active singers and they are participants in periodic singing festivals regionally and nationally, joining approximately 1500 voices from all over the United States. They also participate in local events, such as Oktoberfests and other cultural celebrations throughout Stark and Summit County. 2 Spring Salad Luncheon On Saturday, May 17, 2014, Leslie Bain hosted the annual spring salad luncheon. Highlights from the meeting included the following: The Prince of Wales Hotel Installation of the new Board Shaw Festival at Niagara-on-the-Lake Scholarship money raised will support three $2,000 awards Holiday party to be coordinated by Bev Brockett and hosted at the O Neil House The University of Akron Women s Club will be sponsoring their second trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) to attend plays at the Shaw Festival. The dates for the trip are October 1 3, 2014 which are a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The proceeds from the trip will help to support the scholarship fund of the UAWC. The fee for the trip will include: comfortable roundtrip transportation, all tips and admissions; three fantastic plays (you may purchase a fourth), two night accommodations at the elegant Prince of Wales Hotel; dinner on Wednesday evening, and lunch on the way home; and time to enjoy the ambiance of the picturesque village of Niagara-on-the-Lake. We will all see the one-act play A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur, The other plays are Cabaret, When we Are Married and The Philanderer. Cost is $750 per person, based on double occupancy. 3 Things to Do Women s Club News and Notes Afternoon Book Review August 25th (12 pm) Lunch at the Women s City Club September 29th - Host Kathy Zbinden Long time UAWC member, Ruth Kult passed away on January 9, Her husband, Milton passed away on December 16, A scholarship memorial to the UAWC was received from their daughter, Elizabeth Kult. Note: If you have any news regarding our members such as illnesses, births, or deaths, please call our Corresponding Secretary, Barbara Clark, at (330) or bclark2275@att.net. Carolyn Cox will host the Evening Book Review group on Wednesday, September 17th. Please plan to meet at 6 p.m. for a potluck dinner. Attendees are asked to bring either a salad or dessert and suggestions for books to review in the coming year. The October book will be The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.
4 Things to Do (continued) Lunch-and-a-movie To be determined Bridge Groups Women s Afternoon Chair: Iris Kuehls (330) This group meets the fourth Thursday at noon for lunch and bridge at the apartments at Rockynol, a very nice place to meet. There are usually three choices for lunch. Please call Iris to learn of the choices, as she lets Rockynol know ahead of the meeting what everyone would like. Schedule: August 28th and September 25th Tour Group Canton Museum of Art Intent to Deceive - date to be determined Women s Evening Chair: Anais Webb (330) Evening bridge meets the first Monday evening of the month at 7 p.m. ending the evening by 10 p.m. We meet in members homes for bridge and dessert. Anyone is welcome to join this group or join the sub list.
