1 Newsletter for Nordonia Hills Garden Club gardener s gazette THANK Around the Trellis June 2009 WOW is all I can say about our plant sale. The goal I had set before the club was $2,000 in sales. We did $2,500 in sales. Thank you members for coming together to support the plant sale. There are several members I want to especially Lilian Coluccio - A new member from last years plant sale and who stepped up to take on being Ways & Means Chair. GREAT JOB Lilian! Board & Chair Members - for coming together and supporting the club. You all rock! Greenhouse planters - to the members who donated your time/and money, to go to the greenhouse and plant up our beautiful planters this year. (72 total planters.) Leanne Schroeter - For your wonderful and organized performance of the treasury during the 2 days of sales. Sue Jerabeck - You are a lifesaver. Your assistance on so many things helped the club be ready for our sale as well as clean up. Wayne Meyer - Assistance to Lilian, with seedlings and getting the sign up the week before our sale. Necia/Betty/Audrey Fischer - Our pricer s for this sale. Your pricing is what made it possible for us to make our goal, especially since we didn t have the same amount of plants as last year. Diana Tirpak - Your tent was an answered prayer for shelter. Necia & Wayne - For the use of your tents for our pricing area. Betty Stricharczuk - for securing 10 tables from the Macedonia Fire Department. Jeanne Dombrosky - Pictures and clean up. Members - Your support by working the sale was PHENOMENAL, YOU should be PROUD of yourselves! All Chairs are encouraged to attend. Clematis Tour: Saturday, June 13, 2009, 10:00 a.m. Group to meet up at Rushwood Elementary school parking lot. Once everyone is there we will car pool down to Columbus. Members Only Garden Tour: Sunday, June 14, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.. Each Garden will have a sign w/ballons at the end of their driveway for easy identification. Members please wear your club shirts so that our Garden Hostess will know you are a member of the club. If you don t have a shirt then please wear your club pin. Our tour will conclude with everyone ending up at Necia s garden. All members going to Necia s are asked to bring an appetizer/snack along with your own drink of choice and lawn chair. Members Only Plant Exchange: Wednesday, June 17, 2009, 6:30 p.m. Sagamore Hills Park, back pavilion. You will received 1 ticket for each plant that you bring with a total limit of 10 tickets (you can still bring more than 10 plants if you want). For those who are new members and getting started gardening, not to worry as you will receive 2 tickets so that you may take part in the exchange. 3 Gardener s MEMBER S ONLY PLANT EXCHANGE WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2009 Our yearly Member s Only Plant Exchange is here. So go searching through your garden for some unique plants to bring to the exchange. Make sure you label them with name and the environment they do best in. We will be meeting at the Sagamore Hills Park at the back pavilion this year. For each plant that you bring to the exchange you will receive one ticket - up to 10 total tickets. See Jan Matherly for your tickets. To all of our new members and new gardeners, please come even if you have no plants to exchange as we will be giving out 2 tickets so that you may take part in the exchange Club Theme of the Year A Year to GROW! Not only in memberships and community projects but in club friendships as well. Sunshine Report Sue Jerabek - Oral Surgery If you know of any other members who might be ill, facing surgery or who just need our thoughts and prayers, please notify: Linda Uridel at TOUR Clematis Tour in Columbus, Saturday, June 13th. We will meet at Rushwood Elementary School at 10:00 a.m. and work out the car pooling then. This lady has over 200 varieties of clematis and is opening her home to let us view them. She will even show us some demo s while we are there, there are several smaller garden centers within a few miles of her home so we will make a few stops before finding a place for dinner before we head home. We are pleased to announce and present the winner for 2009: Golden-striped Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonechloa macra Aureola ). Not only is this one of the few shade-tolerant ornamental grasses, it s also very low maintenance and not the least bit invasive. Also for this season, the American Hosta Growers Association has selected Earth Angel as the 2009 Hosta of the Year. This spectacular variegated giant makes a terrific large specimen in a border or all by itself in a container. Talk about a total contrast to the miniature Blue Mouse Ears selected for 2008!
