Welcome to After reading a bunch of other newsletters it seems that it is common to look back at last year and comment on the years events. Who am I to differ from the norm so here goes? We (meaning me and some friends from the chapter) visited many different states in We traveled to the southern most tip of the US (Key West, Fl) and to the northern most eastern state (Maine). Not content going that far north we left the country and went to Nova Scotia, Canada. We visited most states between these two extremes when we went to Wing Ding in Greenville, SC. Not only did we travel east this year but we also went west to New Mexico. Some members on that trip also went up to Colorado. As you can see travel was key in Wing Ding in 2014 will be in Madison, WI so travel will be north and northwest this year. A note for those that have not heard, Wing Ding in 2015 will not be over Independence Day but will be over Labor Day. What other changes happened last year; we picked up new members (fiends) and lost a few. Programs in GWRRA changed along with upper management. The one thing that hasn t changed is the purpose of GWRRA and why I am a member, joining with other Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. 2 Volume 33 2 The gathering for January has been changed to the second (8 th ) because the first is the 1 st and we have our normal New Years Day lunch ride starting at 10:00 AM. Come out to the meeting at Logan s Roadhouse at 7:30 PM. Come early for dinner with your friends. The MidWinter Roundup (Texas District business meeting) will be on the 11 th. Let me know at the meeting if you want to go. I have room for four others in my car. I plan on leaving early and returning in one day. Location is in Waco. Ride Safe and Often Bruce MacMaster, CD Rider Education Rider Educator Sam & Anita Belinoski Region H Use Your Head: Protection Starts at the Top Many riders would say that a helmet is the most important piece of safety gear. A good helmet starts by insuring significant impact and accident protection and also helps you hear and see better when you're riding. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, a rider without a helmet is 40% more likely to suffer a fatal head injury and helmets saved over 19,000 lives from 1984 to Snell vs. DOT: Dueling Helmet Standards When shopping for helmets, riders may notice decals from either the Department of Transportation (DOT) or Snell Memorial Foundation (Snell). Both standards address rider safety, but there are important differences between the two certifications. Every motorcycle helmet sold in the U.S. is required to meet the DOT's FMVSS 218 standard. The Snell helmet standard, however, is based on a rigorous test developed by the Snell Memorial Foundation, a notforprofit organization that develops voluntary standards for motorcycle helmets and other headgear. Helmets are voluntarily submitted by the manufacturers for testing which includes 7 test types, from impact to shell penetration tests to flame resistance testing. Helmets are certified only after technicians verify they meet Snell standards. Guidelines to Selecting the Right Helmet Get the proper fit. The helmet you buy should grip your cheeks, your jaw, and the top and sides of your head. Avoid used helmets. Unfortunately, there's no way to guarantee a used helmet hasn't been compromised by a crash. Remember that wear and tear may significantly reduce protection over time.
3 Volume 33 3 By the Book articles are intended to help familiarize GWRRA Volunteer Leaders and Members with the policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer s Handbook (OHB). A copy of the Officer s Handbook can be found at the following Internet website: What Else is There? Why did you join GWRRA? That is a question we all get asked from time to time. While many of the answers revolve around riding and the fellowship of Chapter life (which is the part I like the most!), there are many who join for other reasons. Which spawns the question, are you getting the most out of your GWRRA membership? How long has it been since you checked out the ever expanding list of benefits available as part of your membership in GWRRA? There are many ways being a member of GWRRA can save you money and not just when traveling. Do you mention having taken GWRRA rider courses when you renew your bike insurance? Many companies will give you a discount for keeping those current. And speaking of insurance, how many of you are paying for roadside assistance as an addition to your bike insurance premium? We get it for free as part of our GWRRA membership, so you can eliminate it from your bike insurance (if you have Rescue Plus you can remove roadside assistance coverage from your car insurance as well). There are discounts on life, health, and longterm care insurance, cell phone plans, office supplies and other nontravel related purchases. When traveling, do you have the GWRRA discount information on lodging, car rental, or even cruises? Have you taken advantage of the GWRRA trip planning services? Many of the benefits are described in the Officer Handbook, however I always recommend going to the 'Benefits' page under the 'Members' tab of for the most current list. The more money you can save by taking advantage of discounts offered to GWRRA Members, the more money you'll have available for participating in GWRRA events or purchasing that all important 'safety chrome'. The more you know, the better it gets! Jack Wagner Region H Trainer A student comes to a young professor's office hours. She glances down the hall, closes his door, and kneels pleadingly. I would do anything to pass this exam," she says. She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, and gazes meaningfully into his eyes. "I mean," she whispers, "I would do anything..."he returns her gaze, "Anything?""Anything." His voice softens, "Anything?" "Anything," she repeats again. His voice turns to a whisper. "Would you... study?" Three friends a surgeon, an engineer, and a politician were discussing which of their professions was the oldest. The surgeon said, "Eve was created from Adam s rib a surgical procedure." The engineer replied, "Before Adam and Eve, order was created out of chaos, and that was an engineering job." The politician said, "Yes, but who do you suppose created the chaos?"
4 Volume 33 4 Just a quick reminder of what is needed for the upcoming Best Hat in Texas competition at the District Convention on 810 May We think it would be lots of fun if the CD s scheduled one of their upcoming Chapter Gatherings as Funny Hat night to inject even more fun into your Gatherings for your membership. We re going to call this contest the Best Hat in Texas. We want this to be fun for everyone and since we re not going to have much time to accomplish this, we re only going to have a couple of rules and run the competition like this: NOTE: Added requirement for pictures in RED. 1. Each Chapter CD should schedule a Funny Hat night for one of their Chapter Gathering. a. RULE ONE: Funny Hat night must be scheduled anytime between now and April 30, Each Chapter will declare a Male & Female winner for their group. 3. After selecting your Chapter Male & Female winners, submit a photo and name (as soon as possible) of each winner to the District MEC s (Steve & Donna Van Gilder). Need photo of both the hat by itself and each winner wearing them. a. RULE TWO: Submit your photos in 800 x 600 pixel format. (If you have any questions about doing that, please call me at ) 4. As we receive the pictures, we will forward them to the District Newsletter Editor and have them put into the Monthly District Newsletter. 5. At the District Convention, we will set up a Best Hat in Texas table with pictures of the Male & Female winners from each Chapter and a ballot box. 6. When you sign in at the District Convention, you will receive a ballot card for the contest in your packet. You can select your winners and place your ballot card in the ballot box. a. Ballots must be completed before 3:00 PM on, 9 May b. Ballots will be counted and tabulated by the District Staff. 7. At the beginning of the Costume Dance on, 9 May 2014, the winners from each Chapter will be announced and presented to the rest of the District Membership. a. RULE THREE: Chapter Winners must be present and wearing their hat s during the presentation to be eligible to win the Best Hat in Texas award. 8. Chapter winners (Male & Female) with the most ballots will be declared the winner of the Best Hat in Texas competition.
5 Volume The winners of the Best Hat in Texas competition will be crowned and rewarded for their efforts. So as you can see, there s not going to be a lot of rules, hopefully only FUN. We sincerely hope that each Chapter participates in this competition and has as much FUN as possible with it. We will do our best to make it a rewarding and FUN experience for all your Chapter winners at the District Convention. So come on Texas, let s find the Best Hat in Texas and have some FUN. Should you have any questions/concerns, please let me know. Steve & Donna Van Gilder TX District MEC s Let s Have Some Fun Texas We will have this contest at our April gathering. Robot slaps the father The mother laughs and says, "He certainly is your son!" Robot slaps the mother

But by the time he decided to go, his office assistant, Seamus, had already booked three appointments right in the middle of the day. Doc McTavish came up with a plan. "Seamus," he said, "I can't cancel the appointments, so I want you to see the three patients." "Yes, sir!" the always obedient Seamus replied. The doctor has a great round of golf, and then rushes back to the office to see how things went. "How did things go?" the anxious medic asks his assistant. The first patient had a headache, so I gave him Tylenol." "Bravo, and the second one?" asks the doctor. "The second one had stomach burning and I gave him Maalox, sir," says Seamus. "Excellent! You're good at this! And what about the third one?" he asks. "Sir, I was sitting here and suddenly the door opened and a beautiful young woman burst through. Like a flame, she undressed herself, taking off everything, and she lay down on the table. She spread her legs and shouted: 'HELP ME! For five years I have not seen any man!'" "Fierce, Seamus!" said the astounded doctor. "What did ye do for that one?" "I gave her eye drops!"
12 Director Corner Jack Wagner Region H Directors Thanks for the Memories I hope looking back at 2013 gives you as much pleasure as it gives me. It was an amazing year and I can't believe it went by as fast as it did. There are so many great memories of times with my Goldwing family. Seems like only yesterday folks were enjoying the camaraderie of a New Year's Day get together, or for the more fortunate, celebrating with a New Year's Day ride. Then it was the flurry of District Business meetings in January, and the first thing I knew it was time for Region H to kick off the rally season. What about the imagination and creativity shown in the theme bike show TXT out in force with their Wings all wearing sunglasses. Or what about Dale Tritsch from KS in his 'minimal' Hawaiian outfit. And who can forget Sam Belinoski's performance during the crazy legs contest? Okay, some memories may best be forgotten! Then it was on to more memories made in conjunction with rallies in Louisiana (I nearly froze to death riding nearly all the way from Edmond in the rain with temps in the mid40's to that one), Texas (when I spent all day with friends riding over 300 miles to get to our destination which if taking a direct route would have been only 2 hrs from my home), Arkansas, and Kansas (another wet ride) before the last one of the season in Oklahoma (yet another wet and cold adventure). Oh yeah, the soggy Wing Ding came in the middle. Hmm, sounds like I ride in the rain a lot all of my friends will attest to that! Maybe that's why I have to ride alone a lot. There were also a multitude of other great rides and memories too numerous to write about here. While there are two 'once in a lifetime' events from 2013 I will never forget (being named International Trainer of the Year at Wing Ding and being appointed your Region Director), the things I cherish the most are the times spent with all of my Goldwing family during the year. The friendship, the laughter, in some cases the sadness, but always the joy of just being together both with and without the bikes. That is what this great Association is all about. It s often said the motorcycles are what brought us together; it s the relationships that keep us together. Here's wishing everyone a happy and prosperous New Year. I know everyone can't do everything placed on the calendar. However, I look forward to seeing each of you as we all participate wherever and whenever we can. Until next month ride like your life depends on it! Jack This farmer had a wife who nagged him all the time. One day while he was outside plowing the field, she came out and started nagging him. While she was doing this, the mule kicked her and she died. At the funeral, the ladies came up and talked to the farmer. The farmer nodded his head "yes". The men came up and talked to him and the farmer nodded his head "no". Well this other man wondered why he nodded his head "yes" to the ladies and "no" to the men. Then, he went up to the farmer and asked him why. The farmer replied, "Well, when the ladies came up, they told me how pretty my wife's dress was and how pretty she looked. When the men came up, they asked, "That mule for sale?"

You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus: 1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die. 2. An old friend who once saved your life. 3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming about. Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car? Think before you continue reading. This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again. The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: "I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams."
