Where is Tunisia? North Africa, facing Europe from the south shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Tunisia is bordered by: North & East: Mediterranean Sea West: Algeria
Quick Facts Population Nearly 11,000,000 Capital Tunis Language French & Arabic Weather Mediterranean: Hot Summers and Warm Winters Desert: Hot Days, Chilly Nights Visa Requirement Not required for stays under 90 days
Why Visit Tunisia 8 World Heritage sites! Amphitheatre of El Jem Archeological site of Carthage Dougga Ichkeul National Park Kairouan Medina of Tunis Necropolis of Kerkouane Medina of Sousse
Tunis (TUN) Capital city Has European influences due to a French protectorate Its Medina is part of Unesco World Heritage Located a few minutes away from Carthage
Carthage Located on a picturesque promontory extending out into the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf of Tunis. Once the center of the ancient Carthaginian civilization. The city developed from a Phoenician colony of the first millennium BC into the capital of an ancient empire. Ruins from this time are still standing.
Sousse -Port El Kantaoui This maritime region in the middle of the country has been famous for its olive oil production since ancient times. Sousse is the chief town. The Medina overlooks the Kasbah and is surrounded by fortified walls which go all the way down to the port. The coast offers beaches and wonderful landscape with colorful sceneries. This beautiful landscape is known for its luxurious hotels with fabulous spas.
Hammamet Yasmine Located in the North East. Home of wonderful beaches and lots of high quality resorts. Using a typical Tunisian design, the medina is surrounded by traditional fortified walls and offers original and varied entertainment. Well-known for thalassotherapy.
Tozeur Located in the central west part of Tunisia. With hundreds of thousands of palm trees, Tozeur is a large oasis. Tozeur is the place to be for Star Wars fans, because there are lots of movie locations around the city: the Lars Homestead exterior, the Mos Espa set, the Sith infiltrator landing site and Star wars canyon. Onj Jemel is also know for its electronic music festival Dunes Eletroniques from the Star Wars set.
Tataouine Located in the South of Tunisia. The Tataouine governorate covers a third of the Tunisian territory. The area is a desert and offers lunar landscapes. Tataouine had given its name to planet Tatooine in Star Wars movies. Medenine is the major town in southeastern Tunisia. Its main attraction is Ksar Medenine, an ancient Berber fortified granary. North of Ksar Medenine was used as the exterior the Anakin Skywalker's home in many shots.
People & Culture An open and hospitable country, Tunisia is a true melting pot where Berber, Arab, African and European cultures have blended to create a unique Tunisian cultural identity. The vast majority of the population is Muslim. Jewish and Christian communities alike practice their faith in freedom, this contributes to enriching the diversity of Tunisia's culture. Tunisians are very welcoming. They are used to see people visiting their country and will always try to speak your language.
Cuisine Tunisian cuisine is a melting pot of culinary influences from the Mediterranean region, although many dishes are formed from a base of tomatoes, herbs, olive oil, and fresh bread. Lamb, veal, chicken, squid, sea bass and tuna are found on a vast menu of national and regional dishes, often in a stew (marqua) or soup (shorba). Due to the vast coast of Tunisia, sea food such as shrimps, mussels and sardines are a specialty of the country. National dish is couscous (coarsely ground semolina), cooked with delicately seasoned root vegetables, chickpeas, boneless chicken, peppers and tomato paste. Almost every dish will be offered to you with harissa which is a red chili paste that Tunisians love. 14
When to go Tunisia enjoys guaranteed sunshine almost all year round, with a Mediterranean climate in the north and along the eastern coast, and a semiarid climate in the interior and in the south. Low season: Winters are cool and wet in the north, warm and dry in the south. The average temperature is 60 degrees. High season: Summer is pleasant on the coast with the sea breeze, warm and dry in other regions. The average temperature is 89 degrees. Shoulder season: In spring and fall, the values are around 77 degrees.
