She has been in hospital for about two weeks and right now is still in ICU, but on the improve. She is alert, laughing, joking and thanking god that she is alive. She is so thankful and praising the medical staff. I think she will have a little different outlook on life after this. It is so good to see her back laughing smiling and joking. She can't remember anything from the day she was admitted to the hospital until they removed the breathing tube on Friday. May 2016 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 2

5 Arizona Speedster Run - Tucson April 2-3 Three HVMTC members decided to participate in the Sun Country T Club Speedster Run out of Tucson. The event follows the usual format with a checkout tour on the Saturday afternoon followed by the main run on the Sunday morning. The Saturday run was out to the North side of Tucson to visit a car collection, everything from Model Ts to muscle cars, John Pepe sure enjoyed looking the latter. My navigator was my 13 year old grandson who had never seen a RHD car. He was astounded that some folks, I blamed Canadians, use to drive on the wrong side of the road. I wonder what he will think when he eventually visits England or Australia? Rickie ran fine, but the terrible road surfaces loosened the box on the back so when we returned to the hotel we added a strap to hold on the gas tank. Anne Tunnell was navigator for Terry Loftus. Sunday found everyone up early as the first car was due away at 7:30. The Pepe's were ready before us so they set off at 7:45 while we got away by 8:05, initially along the same rotten road that we had Saturday... After wandering gradually North east we started to climb the famed Mt Lemmon Highway. Rickie was running good, took it in Ford High all the way, in fact I never used the Ruckstell. After climbing the mountain, over 4,500 ft, we dropped down to Colossal Cave park, where we accidentally took a short which ruined our timing. There is no way Rickie can be 20 minutes fast on a 80 minute section... Following the park, we drove through Vail, where we stopped for ice cream, then over to Green Valley, where we had a one of the Shoot Out Tours in the 90's. The drive up Mission was interesting as the surface is rotten so is best handled by running as fast as possible. John timed us at close to 50mph, though I think it was downhill and the wind behind us... Now the organizer found yet another mountain to the East of town. After all this running, about 170 miles that morning, we were quite tired and I really enjoyed the Italian dinner catered by Olive Garden. Neither the Pepe's, Loftus or the Bowker's placed, but Bob Hayne won and Les Trijilo placed third, both have participated and placed in the MTFCSD run. Great fun, over 24 Speedsters took part and several regular bodied cars participated and we are looking forward to the run out of Jucumba in October. 9 MTFCSD Coastal Tour Unfortunately this tour conflicted with the HVMTC tour, however there was good turnout of nine cars and about 16 people. We met about 9 am at Mission Bay, just North of the Visitors Center where Tony handed out the tour instructions. The route took us through the North end of Claremont and then onto Genesee and then past Torry Pines along Hwy 101. The traffic was not too bad and all went well until we reached the North end of Encintas where we detoured up some small hills to the beautiful new home of Roger and Eleanor Phillips. Eleanor had prepared coffee and goodies for all participants and various family members and other folks who dropped by for the event. They have a great view of the ocean from both the front and rear doors. We also raided Roger's old T spares box, which he no longer needs as he sold his last T, for the November auction. After a really nice visit, we dropped down the hill back onto 101 for the run into Carlsbad for lunch. Several of the members decided to stop by the Flower Fields while the rest of us wanted lunch. Unfortunately Fish House Vera Cruz is now closed, the sign is still up but they are firmly shut. Several of us went to a small Mexican restaurant next door but others fancied something else, they were wise... At 2pm we all reassembled for the run down 101, unfortunately Tony had problems with his Stromberg OF (again, three fails in 3 tours) and we left the Coupe in Encinitas and John Chapman drove me back to Mission Bay. I later found that everyone got home with no further incidents. Great day out, that coastal road is just perfect for the speed of Model Ts. TonyB May 2016 Hidden Valley Model T Club Commutator Page 9
