2 THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF NELSON REQUEST FOR DECISION DATE: January 23, 2017 Special TOPIC: Request for Letter of Support PROPOSAL: Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club Application to CBT Recreation Infrastructure Grant for funding to develop a multi-generational recreation part at Art Gibbons Park PROPOSED BY: Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club ANALYSIS SUMMARY: The Chair of the Rosemont Multi-Generational Park Project (Meg Milner) and President of the Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club (Sandra England) have asked Council to provide a letter of support for their application to the CBT Recreation Infrastructure Grant The grant application is to develop a multi-generational park in Rosemont at the Art Gibbons Park in Nelson A Council resolution is required for this request BACKGROUND: The attached letter explains how the Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club collaborated with the City of Nelson and other stakeholders to develop the skateboard park at the Art Gibbons Park in Rosemont, Nelson During the fall of 2016 the club met with staff to discuss developing a multi-generational park at the same location as the club would like to start raising funds for this project City Parks and Public Works Supervisor, Karen MacDonald, has welcomed the opportunity Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club has presented to contribute further to developing the Art Gibbon Park, making it a wheelchair accessible and age-friendly recreation area Attached are the renderings for the proposed additions to the park together with the playground equipment Karen will also be available at the January 23 rd Council meeting to explain the project and answer any questions Council may have The Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club is requesting an official City letter of support for the project with written confirmation that the City will make an in-kind contribution of the building equipment (eg playground equipment) and remain committed to the ongoing maintenance of the park and installed equipment The Chairperson of the project will be away in early February and has requested that Council provides the letter of support in January The CBT Recreation Infrastructure Grant deadline is February 15, 2017 BENEFITS OR DISADVANTAGES AND NEGATIVE IMPACTS: A letter of support will not only serve to strengthen Nelson Daybreak Rotary Club s grant funding application, but the funding received will significantly assist the City in developing a multi-generational, wheelchair accessible recreation park at Art Gibbon in Rosemont and benefit the whole community LEGISLATIVE IMPACTS, PRECEDENTS, POLICIES: It is within Council s authority to provide the requested letter of support
