3 Letter from the Editor There is a fairly good chance that by the time you read this, we will have a new government and a new prime minister. At the very least, the polling stations might still be open, so if you haven t voted yet, please, please do. It s going to be an interesting time as a new government tries to put itself together, but if you don t vote, even to spoil your paper, I strongly believe that you cannot complain about the result. Everything is blooming! Each time I go into the garden I see something else coming into flower, or popping up through the earth. My pond, finished less than a year ago, is teeming with life. Whenever I use my big poking stick try to get some of the dreaded blanket weed out, newts and frogs wriggle around in the depths, while tadpoles, snails and dragonfly larvae dart around in the shallow bits. The water plants are flowering, fruit trees are full of blossom and even the air smells of warmth and spring. I think this is my favourite time of year. Thank you to Janet Wilson for being our latest willing victim in Meet Your Neighbour this month! Please keep sending things in to magazine@honeybourne.org.uk As always, village news and events are publicised on the Honeybourne website, which is The Village News can be downloaded from there too, if you, or someone you know, would like a digital copy.

13 Not long now until the Bretforton Open Gardens which will be taking place on Sunday 31st May. There are a magnificent 10 gardens taking part this year ranging from attractive cottage gardens with rose pathways and herbaceous borders to the grounds of Bretforton Manor. The Manor dates back to 1605 and has 5 acres of mixed formal and informal areas with lots of unusual plants, listed buildings and structures within the garden including the dovecote, cider barn and a traditional walled garden. Refreshments with home made cakes, a plant sale and a tombola will also be taking take place at Bretforton Manor. A share of the proceeds will be donated to St Richard s Hospice, Worcestershire (Registered Charity number ) and the Evesham All Saints Food Bank. Tickets to view the gardens will be on sale from Bretforton Manor and the Ark Shop in Bretforton at a cost of 5 (free for children) and the gardens are open between am and 5.00 pm. There was no meeting in April but instead we had an evening outing to the beautiful 7 acre gardens at Conderton Manor near Tewkesbury. Thirty members enjoyed the opportunity for a private visit to this recently replanted garden and admired the flowering cherries and bulbs, along with magnificent views of the Cotswolds. The next meeting is on Thursday 21st May (new date to avoid the Elections on 7th May) when we are looking forward to Adrian James who will be talking to us about building a garden from scratch. Adrian and his wife moved to their new home in Offenham in 2009 and have created a fabulous garden designed to ensure there is something of interest all year round. This will be followed by a private tour around his garden on June 18th. Bretforton Garden Club provides an opportunity for local people to learn about a variety of gardening topics in a friendly environment and enjoy interesting days out. We have members from a number of villages including several members from Honeybourne and lifts to the events can usually be arranged for anyone from Honeybourne needing transport. We would be delighted to see any new members who wish to join it only costs 5.00 per year. Please ring Rita Booth on or go to our website for more information. 16 Letter from the Vicar Dear Friends Easter has come and gone, lambs are frolicking in the fields and before we know it, high summer will be upon us! This year brings the General Election to add to the excitement, and election fever seems to have hit our television screens, newspapers and advertising hoardings all over the place. We are fortunate to live in a country where our democratic right to vote is so established that it is taken for granted, but sadly it is not always taken seriously. The day after our elections, 8th May, is the 70th anniversary of VE day and also the anniversary of the liberation of Theresienstadt concentration camp, the last of eight such camps discovered by allied forces between July 1944 and May It is perhaps a fitting time to reflect on the importance of exercising our right to vote in a thoughtful and responsible way. Some may argue that religion and politics do not mix. That seems to me to be flying in the face of logic. Responsible citizens living in a peaceful and generally prosperous land have a duty to participate in the way our country is governed. And most people seek to live in a society which exercises fairness and justice for all. Politics is all about how we are governed, how our lives will be ordered and who we choose to lead us as a nation. Religion is a means by which we live out our own personal lives, how we behave towards others and what we choose to worship. Mixing the personal with the public seems to be an obvious course of action. People of faith seek to live in a way which honours humanity and the environment and seeks to reach out to help those who are in difficulty through sickness, poverty or other human tragedy caused by war or natural disaster. The life and teachings of Jesus Christ embodied a mission to challenge those who were power crazed, selfish and bigoted and to encourage people to live outin action, word and deed a way of life which provided protection for the weak and the poor and the disadvantaged. Whatever our views about politics or religion, our challenge is to think carefully about the published party manifestos and exercise our democratic right to vote on 7th May so that we may continue to live in a peaceful society which strives to do its best for each and every one of its citizens. Whatever our political opinion or party leanings, we should make every effort to step out to the polling stations or cast our votes by post before the polls close on Thursday 7th May. The right to vote is not to be thrown away as something we do if the mood takes us on polling day. With love and blessings Celia
