A new power supply will also be installed for the new light. This is a replacement for the old streetlight on the verge opposite the cemetery access which will be removed when the new light is connected. Honeybourne Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) The Council has agreed to investigate the creation of a Neighbourhood Development Plan for Honeybourne as the South Worcestershire Development Plan is nearing final adoption thereby giving a planning policy base to construct the Honeybourne NDP on. This equates to an increase on a band D property of 2.03% or The council has healthy reserves and are very aware of the considerable financial support the new community centre will require as external funding has not been secured to date. 9 Honeybourne Village Hall and the New Community Centre The Village Hall Committee is facing an exciting time ahead and it is important to explain our aims. With the new house building taking place in Honeybourne, the Parish Council has been able to negotiate with the builders Taylor Wimpey to set aside land on which a new Community Centre can be built. A key aim of the Village Hall Committee is to raise the necessary funds to build and furnish the Community Centre to suit all age groups and organisations in the village, and to provide as many amenities as we can. This will be a challenging task led by Richard Kendrick and a dedicated Committee. We are aiming high to give Honeybourne the best possible facilities and at the same time we will be keeping the current Hall running and providing a valuable service to the Village until the new Community Centre is open. We are very grateful to people like Mrs. Matthews, who is going to be retiring as Bookings Secretary, for the many years of devoted service to the Hall but also delighted to welcome new people who are keen to get involved. We have lots of exciting fund raising events planned for 2015 including the Honeybourne Village Show on 5th September. We really do need more people in the Village to give support. You may not have a lot of time to attend 9 meetings but we would be pleased to hear from anyone who is willing to help. Doug Rushton Village Hall Trustee

What exactly is a Hardy Plant? Vivienne McGhee, previous National Chairman of the Hardy Plant Society, shared her love of plants and Hardy Plants in particular during her lively presentation to the Club on Thursday 8th January. The HPS has 8,000 members many of which belong to local or specialist groups and has a conservation scheme to preserve some of the older plant varieties. When determining if a plant will grow and survive in your own garden it is important to understand aspects such as environment, climate, soil and life processes. Vivienne shared the RHS Plant Hardiness Ratings and members took part in a quiz to test their knowledge on which plants are the hardiest. She also shared photos of some of her successes (and failures!) in growing hardy plants and gave recommendations on good varieties to choose.. Our Annual General Meeting takes place at 7.00 pm on Thursday 5th February in Bretforton Memorial Hall. This is the meeting when we elect members to the Committee, choose the charities we wish to support for the Open Gardens, and receive reports on the business and finances of the Club. We will also be welcoming Bob Brown as our speaker for the evening. Bob will be known to many of you as the owner of the Cotswold Flower Nursery and is speaking to us on So Many Flowers, So Little Space. There is no better way to banish your winter cobwebs than by admiring the snowdrop display at Colesbourne Park. New varieties are added each year, with the collection now totalling some 250 cultivars. We are planning a coach trip from Bretforton on Saturday 21st February. The gardens open at 1.00 pm and the charge for entry and coach travel will be for members, for non members.
Bretforton Garden Club provides an opportunity for local people to learn about a variety of gardening topics in a friendly environment and enjoy interesting days out. We have members from a number of villages including several members from Honeybourne and lifts to the events can usually be arranged for anyone from Honeybourne needing transport. We would be delighted to see any new members who wish to join it only costs 5.00 per year. Please ring Rita Booth on or go to our website for more information. 16 Letter from the Vicar Dear Friends Christmas now seems long in the past and sadly we cannot really claim that 2015 has got off to a very good start if we look around the world. The shooting in Paris has cut to the core of our western belief in the importance of freedom of speech and of religion. Nothing can ever justify such a barbarous act and I do not want to live in a world where there is no opportunity for shining a critical light onto religions, indeed if we are to be true to our faith then that seems to me essential, but I question a practice that is so knowingly offensive. The post massacre edition of Charlie Hebdo shows a picture of the prophet shedding a tear. It is intended to be conciliatory and strikes a chord with Christians. Such a picture reminds us of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem or suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, the God whose strength is made perfect in weakness, the God whose nature is forgiveness. For peace loving Muslims, however, with the prohibition of any visual representations of the Prophet or of Allah, this can only be a source of pain. Even more shocking has been the use of a child as a human bomb, not a suicide bomber because the child had no part in the decision. To me this speaks of evil not a word I use often and a deep sickness, an absence of humanity and morality that makes me weep. So how can we go forward into the year without being cast down? I am constantly heartened by the small acts of kindness that go on without really being noticed, I am heartened by the care that people show one for another, I am heartened by couples who come to see me about getting married, so clearly committed to each other and so clearly in love, I am heartened by the elderly who display the wisdom of years, I am heartened by the faces of children and I am heartened by the renewal of the land, the snowdrops that tell us that spring and summer really will come again. God is faithful in the darkness and in the hope.
February brings with it the season of Lent. Time for chocolate depriv ation or whatever else we think might fit the bill! More importantly though, it is a time when we commit to spending time together once a week to reflect on elements of our faith and its relationship to the world. Last year we looked at Les Misérables and this year there will be meetings at Weston sub Edge Village Hall to look at Puzzling Questions, for example, why is there suffering in the world? These are the sorts of questions that I often hear posed as I go around the parishes so I hope that many of you will take the opportunity to come along. Do not lose heart. Look around you and day by day be thankful. With love and blessings Debbie 17

CHURCH NEWS November/December 2014 Wedding Cordelia Scott to Gareth Grassby Dear Friends It is with great sadness we have to report that there seems to be a small element hanging around church who are causing a few problems. The honesty box in church has had its padlock cut off twice in the last three months and candles are being removed and burnt within the churchyard. Could we ask all of you who either walk dogs or children through the churchyard just to keep an eye open and give us a ring should you be unhappy at what you see. Please note the new service on week four of the month, please do come along and join us. Mary Miller Churchwarden

A 5.5-Mile Walk with wonderful views Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended.this route is clearly signed (signposts and waymarkers). Pets should be kept on leads at all times. The walk starts at the Gate Inn. Adjacent to the pub car park is the footpath to the Church. Follow this path through two fields and into the churchyard. Keep to the left hand edge and exit at the kissing gate. Follow the road round to the right until you arrive at the T junction at the cemetery. Opposite you will see a stile in the right hand corner near to the cemetery fence. Over this stile and another stile into the main field where you will follow the hedge on your left hand side until you arrive at the stile onto the Mickleton Road. TAKE GREAT CARE when crossing this road. Over the next stile into the field. Do not follow the direction of the signpost as this is incorrect, but head towards the railway bridge in the far left corner of this field. Over another stile and out onto Stratford Road. Turn right and, TAKING GREAT CARE, walk (facing the oncoming traffic) under the two railway bridges. Immediately after the second bridge turn right onto the bridleway. Pass by the cattle grid and follow the tarmac surface to a large field gate. Pass through and follow the track up the hill. When you get to the footpath signpost at the top of the hill, turn around to admire the view a lovely spot for a picnic (but remember to take your litter home with you!). You will see Honeybourne church below, and sweeping views including (from the left) Cutsdean Hill (305 m high), Oxenton Hill (223m), Dumbleton Hill (168m), Forest of Dean (up to 290m) with the Black Mountains (up to 886 m) behind, Bredon Hill (299 m) and the Malvern Hills (up to 425 m high). Turn left and follow the footpath sign along the top of the hill
with the fence on your right hand side (hedge on left), you will pass through two large fields before passing a large barn and arriving at the Pebworth Road near the top of Baylis s Hill. Look over your right shoulder to see Meon Hill. TAKE GREAT CARE to cross the road and pass through the field gate. This is not a right of way, but you have permission to pass through on this walk *. Walk along the stone track to the left hand corner of this field, then turn left with the hedge on your left and head towards the metal gate and then on to a stile in the far left hand corner of this field. Step over the stile and ditch bridge cross the driveway, and look for a wooden ditch bridge near the left hand hedge, then straight ahead until you reach a ditch bridge leading onto a stile into the next field. Over the stile and straight ahead to the next stile on the opposite side of the field. Over the stile, then straight ahead to the next stile (to the left of the track). Over this stile then walk straight ahead with the hedge on your right until you meet a small metal frame that you should take care to climb over. Continue in the same direction until you meet another stile leading onto the road. Turn right and follow the highway for 200 meters to the church. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds before retracing your steps back to Honeybourne. We hope you have enjoyed your walk today, and that 25 we have whetted your appetite for a variety of future walks in and around the Parish of Honeybourne. * To obtain permission to access this and other walks in the Heart of England Forest telephone steve@stephenbullen.com for copies of any walks, to express concerns, or seek advice on how to best enjoy Honeybourne s Rights of Way.
Grey Partridges Last week I was walking my dogs over the airfield. It s a circular route that I ve done at least weekly for as long as I ve been in the village, and takes me down the Leys, across the first field and up to the big ridge. I turn right and follow the concrete paths along the high hedge row, past the grain barn and then along the track either to squeeze through the hedge onto Gloster Ades or over the gate. I was shown this walk within weeks of coming to Honeybourne and I know a lot of people enjoy it too. Last week though, a couple of men stopped me and told me that the concrete paths round the airfield weren t public rights of way. I don t think I m alone among dog walkers in thinking that as long as we clear up and keep the dogs under control we are not doing anything wrong walking along pathways or the edges of fields. But these gentlemen explained that just being in the fields was disturbing a conservation effort to help Grey Partridges. Dogs running and sniffing and barking and generally doing what they do when they re off the lead upsets the cages of birds that have been set up around the farmland. After my initial first reaction of wondering who they were to tell me to turn back, I checked with someone I know who knows things like this. He told me that Keep Off Our Partridges is a legitimate request. There is a Public Right Of Way over the fields, but instead of turning at the big brambly ridge you just go through the gap and keep walking straight on, following the way posts through the fields. Please do not walk around the farmland, especially at the moment, as this is when the grey partridges start to pair up. They nest on the ground, in the thick vegetation under hedges, and once their eggs are hatched the hen takes her brood to look for insects and seeds. Wheat and barley crops provide cover from predators and is an ideal habitat. It is estimated that one hundred years ago there were more than a
million pairs of these birds breeding in Britain. Since then, following the use of herbicides in modern farming, a loss of hedgerows and fewer gamekeepers, it is thought that the grey partridge population has declined to under 75,000 pairs. By the end of February pairs will have formed and the birds start looking for nesting sites. Eggs hatch mid May to Mid July, the time that insects such as sawfly larvae are most prevalent. The chicks need to consume a lot of high protein food like caterpillars in the first few days after hatching to encourage strong growth and feathering. This conservation project is a very worth while cause, so please, keep to the signposted rights of way around the village and no matter how innocent you think your off track walking is, it could be having a dramatic effect on local wildlife. Pots for Charity! Honeybourne Pottery's recently-renovated studio and shop was launched on Sunday 25th January with a "Charity Pot Throw." Visitors were invited to have a go on the potter's wheel and make a donation to SNEHA, a Mumbai-based charity that focuses on women's health and the education of children in India. For more information visit their website at The cover photo shows how much fun pottery is! Thank you to Annabel and Alan for a very enjoyable afternoon!
