Parish Council News A VACANCY EXISTS FOR A COUNCILLOR TO BE CO-OPTED ON TO THE PARISH COUNCIL Those who are interested in serving the community in this way and want to become a candidate for co-option should obtain an application form for candidacy from the Clerk or phone Cllr David Cowan on Also available to download from Allotment Vacancies Anyone wishing to grow their own fresh fruit and vegetables can do so on the Honeybourne Community Allotments as several plots are currently available for just 20 rent per year. Some of the plots are just vacated and ready to be taken over without excessive input, so don t delay order one today by contacting Kevin Gisbourne on or the Parish Council Clerk. Recreation Field Development The Council are hopeful that contractors will be starting on phase one of the development works by the end of June or soon after. The Project Manager s report to the June Parish Council highlighted an issue with the planning department regarding the archaeological site survey which may cause a delay in having the full planning permission granted. Cllr Alistair Adams considered this would not cause a holdup as the permission was granted subject to satisfactory plans for changing rooms being submitted. He was asked to intervene on the matter to expedite the planning process. The amended changing room plans were approved by the Parish Council at their June meeting and will now be submitted to the planning officer to achieve the final planning approval. The pavilion with its changings rooms is in phase two of the project and will be constructed when phase one is complete, which includes the field drainage and pitch creation, the new access and the MUGA.

Streetlights High Street Light: several options were considered for the repair of the faulty streetlight #17 in the High Street and council agreed the old style lantern should be upgraded to a new LED lantern as part of the streetlight refurbishment programme. The new lantern will have a part night timer fitted for further economy. Stratford Road Light: a new LED streetlight is ordered for the junction of Church Lane as a replacement for the one opposite which has a rotted pole. The streetlight at No 35 is switched off and its fate is to be considered when the new light is installed and evaluated. Green Close & The Gate Inn cross roads new LED streetlights are expected to be installed in July after a delay of almost nine months. Community Centre Project: Taylor Wimpey have at long last issued a draft land transfer agreement document for the new Community Centre off Weston Road. Confirmation has been received from Taylor Wimpey that utility connections would be available as part of the transfer. The draft transfer document is currently with the County Council Conveyancer acting for the Parish Council who are waiting for their comments or considerations prior to the council agreeing to the transfer agreement. When the agreement is signed the council will proceed with gaining planning permission for the new Community Centre. The Parish Council meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings, which are held in the Village Hall and commence at 7.30 pm. Residents are welcome to speak on any issue of local concern during the Open Forum. 13 The Garden Club has a number of outings planned during the summertime and in June we went to see a garden in Offenham owned by Adrian and Sheila James. They bought the land in 2009 and literally built a garden from scratch. Adrian had talked to us about his experiences at our meeting in May and it was wonderful to see what had been created. The garden was divided into different areas with lots of interesting features and was a riot of colour. Members finished the lovely sunny evening with tea and cake which was very enjoyable. On May 31st Bretforton Open Gardens took place with a magnificent nine gardens on display including the beautiful gardens of Bretforton Manor where there was also a plant sale and refreshments. Despite the weather being unsettled nearly 500 people visited the gardens, including people from as far afield as New Zealand and Australia. The Garden Club will be donating 2,000 to St Richard s Hospice, Worcestershire, and 500 to the Evesham All Saints Food Bank from the proceeds, a really fantastic amount. Our thanks go out to everyone who supported the Open Gardens, making it such a successful event. Our next outing is an evening visit on Thursday 23rd July to the Walled Herb Garden in Worcester. Bretforton Garden Club provides an opportunity for local people to learn about a variety of gardening topics in a friendly environment and enjoy interesting garden visits. We normally meet in Bretforton Memorial Hall on Main Street, Bretforton at 7.30 on the first Thursday of the month and have members from a number of villages including several members from Honeybourne. Lifts to the events can usually be arranged for anyone from Honeybourne needing transport. We would be delighted to see any new members who wish to join it only costs 5.00 per year. Please ring Rita Booth on or go to our website gardenclub.co.uk for more information. Rita Booth Secretary, Bretforton Garden Club

Letter from the Vicar Dear Friends Almost a year ago life changed dramatically for me. As a newly ordained deacon, I joined this group of parishes as a complete stranger. I have been greatly blessed by your welcome and encouragement. Once again this year I can expect life to change having just been ordained priest. This doesn t mean a move a priest s training spans five or six years before being considered safe to be let loose alone among you! But whether curate or vicar, we have to accept change with good grace if we are to do our job well. One source of energy and refreshment to which all clergy are committed is time spent in daily prayer and worship. Just as we need to spend time with friends and family to get to know them better, prayer and worship are the way we get to know and develop a closer relationship with God. And strong, healthy relationships are a source of energy and security, through good times and bad, through periods of change and during times of stability. The changes I have experienced have been truly energising, not least because I know that family, friends and colleagues have been praying for me. All of us experience change in some shape or form many times throughout our lives. Whether it is of the hatched, matched and despatched variety, a change of job, a house move or some other event, we cannot avoid change at some point in our lives. The changes for our six parishes have been both challenging and encouraging. We have morphed from four parishes to six. We now belong to a larger team ministry as well. We have had to say farewell to the familiar and begin to understand different ways of doing things and different people doing them. As we work together to become a united group of parishes we will inevitably experience further change. Change can create uncertainty, fear and a loss of confidence. New housing developments, property used only at weekends or as holiday lets and isolation for those who become housebound is changing the shape of our communities. While some of these changes seem difficult and our instinct is to preserve the familiar, change doesn t need to be daunting or fearful if we keep an open mind and adopt a positive attitude. Hospitality and thought for others are key elements of Christian living. Such an approach leads to growth while looking inwards generally runs the risk of imploding on ourselves. Christians underpin these principles of hospitality and welcome in a life of prayer and worship.

Growing a relationship with God helps us to grow relationships with others. Looking outward, being positive and seeking to learn how we might grow good relationships in our communities will mean that change will no longer feel unwelcome. Prayer helps us in this enterprise. Our diocese has published a little booklet called Try Praying. The booklets are available in our parish churches. And in each of our churches you are invited to leave any prayer requests you might have. That prayer request will be said on your behalf by a member of the clergy team during the week. As we learn to adjust to continuing change in our village society and churches, I encourage you to give it a shot try praying occasionally you might be surprised by the outcome! With love and blessings Celia 17 1

A 5 Mile History Walk to Weston sub Edge Distance: 5 miles flat terrain. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended. This route is clearly signed (signposts and waymarkers) Pets should be kept on leads at all times. Start at the The Gate Inn and cross the Weston Road (TAKE GREAT CARE) and walk up High Street to the Thatched Tavern then take the road alongside the Thatched Tavern into China Corner, walking straight on until you pass through the narrow gap opposite, between the houses. This leads up some steps and into a large field that is currently under development for housing. Turn right and follow the fencing / headland until you come to a waymarker post deep in the brambles, and adjacent to the pool (site of the Honeybourne murder in 1809). Currently the path to the old chicken sheds at Weston Road is blocked by the electric fence of a paddock. If this path has not yet reopened, then continue on to the bridge and then turn left along the headland to the Weston Road. TAKE GREAT CARE when crossing this road. This is a very fast road, and visibility is not very good. Follow the grass verge to your right where, after 100 metres, you will join a footpath towards Weston Fields Farm. After 20 metres fork right to the stile opposite the farmhouse. Follow the path with the brook on your right, crossing two more stiles before coming to a gate that leads into the garden of Long Stretch Farm. Through this beautiful woodland garden before crossing over the brook bridge to follow the path with the brook now on your left side. Over another stile, continuing to follow the brook until you meet a stile leading onto the dismantled railway (to the right of the brick culvert). Cross over the railway and through the gate into Gloucestershire. Continue straight ahead to the next gate where you will turn right and climb over the fence next to the field gate then immediately left to walk alongside the electric fence surrounding the new woodland planting. Over a stile just past the dilapidated wartime airfield buildings follow the field edge with the stream on your left. Over another stile and ahead again until you reach the bridge on your left. The industrial estate you see to your right was part of RAF Honeybourne. It has been said that these buildings were used in the filming of some scenes from the BBC TV series Tenko. Cross over the stream and then straight across the young tree plantation until you reach the next stile. With your back to the stile take a 2.30

o clock direction to the next stile. Over the stile and follow the track to your right until you meet the main road in Weston sub edge. TAKE GREAT CARE to cross this road and continue ahead along Church Street until you reach Parsons Lane on your right, taking time as you pass under the large cedar tree to turn back to look at the barn with two white doors, noticing the fire plate at the apex of the roof (erected by an insurance company "Which Mark is to be number'd with the Number of the Subscribers Policy, and there to remain so long as the Subscribers continue to pay their Quarteridges") above a stone dated Walk down Parsons Lane past the old almshouses (Meon Cottage) until you reach the green footpath sign on your left. Along this footpath passing the 19th century water point. Turn left to follow the footpath between the gardens and out into the field. Continue to follow this path until you reach the bridge over the stream. Pass through the kissing gate onto the site of the moated manor. This manor was already owned by the Giffard family1279, when Walter Gifford (Archbishop of York) died, and it passed to his brother, Godfrey, Bishop of Worcester. Follow the path straight ahead with the first telegraph pole and the moat on your left. Walk towards the far right hand corner of this field until you reach the last telegraph pole. Turn left along the edge of the header pond. The medieval ponds are now clearly visible. Continue walking around the pond edge in the direction of the church. If you take a short detour on your left to the high ground you will have an excellent over view of the site. It is interesting to note that when we experience flood conditions, this moat and the ponds are full of water. When you reach the cemetery, pass through the kissing gate and on to the church door. Follow the path to the right until you reach the main gated entrance. Turn left into Church Street and walk down to Parsons Lane. Now you can retrace your steps back to Honeybourne, perhaps stopping at the Seagrave Arms for refreshment. We hope you have enjoyed your walk today, and that we have whetted your appetite for a variety of future walks in and around the Parish of Honeybourne. steve@stephenbullen.com for copies of any walks, to express concerns, or seek advice on how to best enjoy Honeybourne s Rights of Way.

CHURCH NEWS Dear Friends Can we say very big thank to everyone who supported and helped with our Fayre in May. For those of you who have not heard we raised over It was lovely to meet up with so many friends of St. Ecgwins and to make new friends who joined us at the village hall. By the time this magazine is delivered Celia, our Curate, will have been priested and held her first Communion at Willersey Church, we look forward to welcoming her to Honeybourne in her new role! If anyone has any ideas for fundraising please do get in touch with either myself or Sylvia Matthews, new ideas are needed to help in the raising of funds for Church. Mary Miller Churchwarden

Help required re Honeybourne s Jurassic Ichthyosaur In the Almonry Heritage and Tourist Information Centre in Evesham there is a large slab of rock (about a meter long) containing numerous shells and a partial skeleton (mostly ribs and backbones) of a fossilised ichthyosaur. These reptiles resembled dolphins but lived in the seas millions of years ago when dinosaurs were roaming the nearby landmasses. This particular specimen is labelled as possibly being from Honeybourne but there is no other data with it. The village of Honeybourne certainly isn t known for its ichthyosaur fossils so we (two palaeontologists specialising in the study of ichthyosaurs) would like to track down exactly where this specimen was found so that we can date it accurately and also look for more! So, please take a look at the picture.

Do you recognise the specimen? Do you know who donated the fossil to the Almonry Heritage Centre? Do you know where it was found? Even if you know nothing about this specimen, have you heard of other fossils (not just ichthyosaurs) being found in or around Honeybourne? If you think you can help us, please do get in touch. Nigel Larkin at this address: Or contact the Honeybourne Village News. Christian Aid week update: The final total was considerably more than reported in the June magazine was raised, which is definitely a record.
