8 Whatever you want from the river, you ll find it here in Richmond upon Thames, where the capital meets the countryside. heron, ducks, and moorhen - even cormorant and egret. Out on the water, why not hire a traditional Thames rowing skiff at Out on the water, why not take a passenger boat upstream to Westminster or down to Hampton Court? The River Thames The Thames Path takes you through busy riverside towns brimming with restaurants, cafes and pubs, and past wild commons and woodland. Islands dot the river, ranging from deeply wooded to bustling industrial, complete with boat yards and moorings. Modern luxury flats, grand historic homes and palaces, and little plotlands houses, found on Eel Pie and Trowlock Islands, overlook the water. And everywhere you will see waterfowl - grebe, coot, swans, geese, Richmond, Marble Hill or Hampton Court. Ferries depart from Hampton and Ham, and whether on the water or the towpath, you can watch boats glide through the locks at Richmond and Teddington. In Richmond upon Thames, the river has a special magic. Richmond upon Thames is the open spaces The jewel in the crown is majestic Richmond Park, with its gently rolling hills, ancient copses and herds of free-roaming deer, little changed from the days of CharlesI. 11 Richmond Park London s largest park with 2,500 acres of hills, woodlands, gardens and grassland with stunning views as far as St Paul s Cathedral. Home to large herds of red and fallow deer, the gated park was designated as a National Nature Reserve in The adventurous can enjoy a host of activities including horse riding, cycling and power kiting. 18 Richmond and East Sheen Cemetery The borough s tombs are among the less well known but fascinating places to explore. Among the most remarkable is the final resting place of adventurer Sir Richard Burton in Mortlake. His tomb takes the form of an Arab tent built of Forest of Dean and his mistress, Priscilla Hoste, whose coffins lie side-by-side. Memorials reveal fascinating aspects of the borough including the Chilean link. The founder of modern Chile, Bernardo O Higgins, who lived in the borough in his early years, and beautifully restored Grove Gardens Chapel. The borough is also home to the Poppy Factory in Petersham Road where 32 million Remembrance poppies and 80,000 wreaths are made every year. Tombs and history stone. The sides are sculpted to create an illusion of canvas tugged by a desert wind. It can be found in the cemetery of the Church of St Mary Magdalen in North Worple Way. Equally unusual is the Kilmorey Mausoleum in St Margarets, opposite the Ailsa Tavern. This Egyptian-style tomb was designed for the Earl of Kilmorey has a memorial and square named after him next to Richmond Bridge. And in Richmond Cemetery a memorial which bears a striking resemblance to The Cenotaph in Whitehall honours South Africans who were killed during World War I. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed them both. 27 Suggested Itineraries Full-day trips Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Hampton Court Palace - Arrive by boat from Westminster, Kew, Richmond, Kingston or Hampton Court Half-day attractions The following attractions will take about half a day to visit and therefore could be combined with one another: London Wetland Centre Marble Hill House Ham House - Sit on opposite banks of the River Thames and from April to October a small ferry runs between them, takes 5 minutes, much quicker than going by road! 50 travel A wide range of buses cover the borough. Most run on a frequency of between minutes. A guide to bus routes and railway information, Exploring Richmond upon Thames by Public Transport, is widely available free of charge from tube and railway stations and the Tourist Information Centres. (Throughout the guide walking times from buses are approximate. If no time is stated assume less than 5min walk.) Richmond and Kew Gardens are connected to the London Underground network via the District Line. A journey into central London takes approximately 30 minutes. The relaxing way to travel to and around Richmond upon Thames is by train. There are up to eight off-peak trains an hour leaving London Waterloo, taking approximately 20 minutes to reach the centre of Richmond upon Thames. Travel to one of the many South West Trains stations within the area including Richmond, Hampton Court, Twickenham and Kew Bridge. Locations are marked on the map (see back cover). For train times and fare information call National Rail Enquiries on: (calls may be recorded) Richmond is also the terminus of Silverlink Trains, which link Richmond via North London to North Woolwich. Heathrow Airport is on the doorstep bringing visitors from far and wide. The following buses leave from Heathrow: Bus No. 111, 726 (to Hampton), 285 (to Teddington) and 490 (Hatton Cross to Richmond). The Piccadilly line from Hammersmith Underground goes to all terminals. Taxi services are widely available. There are several marked cycle lanes and many visitor attractions provide cycle racks. Richmond Park has a marked cycle route around the perimeter. Leisure cycling guides are available from the Richmond Information Centre and local bookshops. The borough is an ideal place for walking in picturesque surroundings. The Thames Path links Hampton Court Palace, Ham House, Twickenham, York House, Orleans House Gallery, Marble Hill House, Richmond, Kew Gardens and the London Wetland Centre.
