The transformation of its docklands from industrial remnants to its coolest residence and the emergence of Canary Wharf as the Capital s second city have triggered development on an unprecedented scale. This renaissance has not contained itself exclusively along the River. The old East End is now the new Cultural Capital, with the hottest Brit-Art galleries and artists preferring Hoxton and Shoreditch to their traditional west of centre haunts. 1 Canada Water Underground Station 2 Tower Bridge 3 St Katharine's Dock 4 Tate Modern 5 The South Bank 6 The City Even the once maligned Millennium Dome could not resist the east s Midas Touch, and has now reinvented itself as The O 2, undoubtedly Europe s premier venue. The rest of the Greenwich Peninsula is soon to follow, with bold plans for a new Canary Wharf on the former gas works site. The ripples of revival can be felt as far as the Thames Barrier with Excel fast becoming the exhibitor s venue of choice, in fact this stretch of river has played host to some of London s largest luxury residential schemes and has ambitious plans for many more. Much of this success is due to a well planned and well executed infrastructure. City Airport, a combination of new and improved roads and the Docklands Light Railway now connect these once remote areas. Add to this the extension of the Jubilee line, one of the most reliable modes of transport in London, and you have testament to city planning at its best. It is for these reasons that London s East End won the 2012 Olympic bid for Britain, sparking a whole new round of regeneration and improvement plans, making this Britain s largest regeneration zone. Maple Quays sits at the centre of what is undoubtedly New London, being on the doorstep of both the East End and the South Bank success stories, and is in the process of writing a chapter of its own in London's renaissance. 5 ROTHERHITHE, SOUTHWARK: SUPERBLY POSITIONED Although Rotherhithe benefits from an excellent position between the districts of Greenwich and Canary Wharf, and the City and the West End, it also occupies a fantastic location in its own right. Southwark has an attractive environment of meandering lanes, calm lakes, an interesting variety of buildings and architecture, and a total of 130 green open spaces. One of the greenest boroughs in London, 25% of Southwark is made up of open space, including Southwark Park s boating lake and stunning gardens, the Russia Dock Woodland and the 5.2 acre Stave Hill Ecological Park. 16 CANADA WATER: A BRIGHT NEW FUTURE We will ensure that this major regeneration scheme delivers fantastic opportunities and amenities to the local community, taking a major step forward David Taylor, Chairman of BL Canada Quays Rotherhithe & Southwark Rotherhithe has benefited hugely in recent years from the improvements to nearby Borough, Bankside and London Bridge, especially with developments such as the Tate Modern, the Globe and the Millennium Bridge. Cinema Bowling and Bingo Within the plaza, one of the first buildings to be developed is the striking state-of-the-art library. This shimmering aluminium clad structure will provide ample space for a variety of facilities, including a Heritage Centre and a performance space for music and art exhibitions and performances. From under fives play groups to Introduction to the Internet and ICT sessions, a full range of courses, learning packages and activities will provide for all members of the community, as will the free computer and Internet access, available until late into the evening. Surrey Quays Shopping Centre A café and extensive seating area within the square will make this a delightful arena for relaxing by the water s edge, forming the largest viewing platform throughout the development. As the arrival space to Canada Water and with the entrance to the underground station and bus exchange, the plaza will be a hub of activity and will establish the character of the whole development. Its thoughtful design has been devised to create a dramatic and elegant impact. Stunning, creative lighting proposals will make this a beautiful and exciting evening venue, with sculptural lighting effects, light art and detailed landscaping. As well as the library and Community Resource Centre, the plaza will also be home to a new aquatic centre, and the adjacent water s edge promenade will be the frontage for a collection of stylish cafés and restaurants overlooking the water. This boardwalk will lead to the shopping district and galleria, providing an array of shops to suit all. The future will see Canada Water transformed into a thriving community in its own right, with a proposed crèche, leisure centre, youth centre and health centre, and possibly even a farmer s market, health club, gallery and skating rink. These features will bring together the residents at Canada Water, as well as those from surrounding areas, to form a vibrant new urban district.

At the roundabout, leave at the fifth exit, Eastern Avenue (A12). Branch left onto Brunswick Road and then right onto East India Dock Road (A13).
