7 Glasgow, a City of Sports Glasgow is home to 3 professional football clubs: Celtic, Rangers and Partick Thistle Celtic F.C. Glasgow has a long sporting history, with the world's first international football match held in 1872 at the West of Scotland Cricket Club's Hamilton Crescent ground in the Partick area of Glasgow. The city is also home to Scotland's largest football stadia: Celtic Park with 60,355 seats. Glasgow also boasts a professional rugby union team, the Glasgow Warriors, which play in the Celtic League alongside teams from Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The 2014 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, from 23 July to 3 August It was the largest multi-sport event ever held in Scotland with around 4,950 athletes from 71 different nations and territories competing in 18 different sports. Glasgow was awarded a title of 'European Capital of Sport' in 2013 (European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation) Rangers F.C. Celtic's home ground is Celtic stadium is Celtic Park, which is in the Parkhead area of Glasgow. Celtic Park, an all-seater stadium with a capacity of 60,355 is the largest football stadium in Scotland and the seventh largest stadium in the United Kingdom. Rangers's homeground is Ibrox Stadium, which is in the south-west of the city. Ibrox Stadium is the third largest football stadium in Scotland, having an all-seated capacity of 50,817. Rangers play in the Scottish Premiership, the first tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. Celtic have won the Scottish League Championship on 47 occasions, most recently in the season, the Scottish Cup 36 times and the Scottish League Cup 15 times. The club's greatest season was , when Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup, also winning the Scottish League Championship, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, and the Glasgow Cup. Celtic also reached the 1970 European Cup Final, and the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. Rangers have won more league titles and trebles than any other club in the world, winning the league title 54 times, the Scottish Cup 33 times and the Scottish League Cup 27 times, and achieving the treble of all three in the same season seven times. 8 Home to Top-class Universities University of Strathclyde Glasgow Caledonian University University of Glasgow Named by The Times Higher Education Awards as Entrepreneurial University of the Year, Strathclyde is now closer to its goal of becoming one the leading technological universities in the world. Now home to students from more than 100 counties, it is committed to the highest standards of teaching and innovation applicable for the benefit of society and the environment. Formed in 1993, Glasgow Caledonian University is a vibrant, modern university. A small, single-campus institution in the heart of the city, it is considered an international centre of excellence, committed to delivering the ultimate student experience through its award winning Saltire Centre and the numerous on-campus facilities available to students. Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow has a tradition of merit as the fourth oldest university in the United Kingdom. It is consistently ranked amongst the top 25 institutions in the UK and is in top one per cent of the world, ensuring it regularly attracts high numbers of applicants from both within the UK and overseas. Glasgow Caledonian is the first Scottish university to open a campus in London and work has started to establish a base in New York with a view to offering executive training and short courses. The University of Glasgow is profoundly research-led and is both a member of the highly-esteemed Russell Group and Universitas 21. With more than 2,000 active researchers, research grants and contracts income totals more than 128m annually, making it one of the Top 10 earners for research in the UK. Glasgow schools are top of the class as national awards finalists (Scottish Education Awards 2016) Glasgow is a major centre of higher and academic research with 6 universities, 4 of which are within 10 miles of the city centre. There are also three further education colleges in the city: City of Glasgow College, Glasgow Clyde College and Glasgow Kelvin College. Higher education colleges in the city include Jordanhill Teacher Training College, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the Glasgow School of Art. These six-university offering that attracts 80,000 students to every year. Once in Glasgow, students are not only offered a world-class education, but a free education. 9 A Well-connected International City Rail 3 Glasgow Central Station was European Rail Station of the Year Glasgow Central has connections to all major English cities. London can be reached in four to six hours. There are 38 train links a day between Glasgow and London Euston. Glasgow Queen Street station connects Glasgow to the East and North of Scotland (Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness). Eight trains go to Edinburgh per hour, which can be reached in 50 minutes. The rail network also serves the scenic west coast towns and villages. Two rail stations in the heart of the city centre. Glasgow is a compact city and transport options are plentiful. Glasgow is within an hour s drive of three international airports, with Glasgow Airport only 15 minutes from the city centre. Rail and motorway links are also extensive and commuter/passenger services are frequent, reliable and well maintained. An on-going programme of investment in the transport infrastructure ensures that Glasgow is a connected city. Projects such as an extensive development and major expansion at Glasgow Airport and several motorway and rail line improvements are either underway or were recently completed. It is currently undergoing a 300 million refurbishment and modernisation programme. The subway has 15 stations, all fully Wi-Fi enabled, offering easy access to the city centre and West End with trains running every five minutes at peak times. It only takes 24 minutes to complete the full circuit. Airport Glasgow Airport is the UK and Scottish Airport of the Year Glasgow Airport has approx. 200 flights daily. 26 new direct routes for 2016 include Montreal, Toronto, Marseille and Seoul. 358 flights to London per week and up to 62 flights per day to/from London. One hour flight time to London. 7.7 million passengers pass through Glasgow Airport annually. More than 60 million investment in the airport over the last four years. Glasgow Prestwick International and Edinburgh International are each 45 minutes from Glasgow city centre. E-Connectivity Glasgow s digital connectivity can meet and exceed the most demanding technology requirements of today s progressive companies. Through the implementation of the Digital Glasgow Project, collaboration across industry and the public sector, the city aspires to reach 90% coverage by 2018, ideally with speeds of mbps and thus exceeding the Scottish Government target of availability of next generation broadband by Glasgow is the first Scottish city to award a wireless concession available in the city s streets and public spaces.

Glasgow s retail market grows year on year and a number of expansions and refurbishments are either underway or recently completed. The Glasgow City Region City Deal, worth 1.44 billion (1.13 billion GBP) are seeking to lever 4.2 billion (3.3 billion GBP) of private investment, this will provide a once-in-a-generation investment into the city region infrastructure over the next 20 years with a pipeline of major infrastructure programmes. The projects which, through public sector initiatives will create opportunities for private sector investment include Sighthill Transformational Regeneration Area (TRA) in the north of the city centre and the Glasgow Airport Investment Area in neighbouring Renfrewshire, where investment partners are being sought. Glasgow attracted 5.27 billion of commercial property investment in the past decade, ranking first in Scotland and third for investment outside London. (CBRE, Core Cities, Core Strengths) People Make Glasgow Home In 2015, in response to the city s growing population and to support our thriving economy and inward investment offer, Glasgow City Council launched a new housing strategy, People Make Glasgow Home, committing to building 25,000 new homes in the next 10 years period. Key areas of this strategy include: land release for the development of affordable homes, helping first-time buyers to access mortgages, turning empty shops into housing, releasing 20 sites for development by housing associations in the first year of the strategy and developing sites for self and custom-build houses.
