Edinburgh Control Tower visit - November Have you ever wondered what goes on in a busy Air Traffic Control Tower? Here s your chance to see how these real professionals route all the traffic around our skies and guide them safely to their destination. This is an excellent chance to gain an insight into what goes on behind the scenes. If interested put your name on the noticeboard date to be announced soon! NEW TFC POLO SHIRTS AVAILABLE TFC Polo Shirts with brand New Logo available from the Tayside Ops Desk, TFC Committee members or contact wings@taysideflyingclub.org.uk Adult Sizes 15 Child 10 TFC Winter Fly-Out 8th & 9th November We plan to take 2 Warriors to either the Scottish Western Isles or route South to England, depending on the weather. This will be an overnight stay for 6 pilots. If you fancy some challenging flying, magnificent scenery and fantastic camaraderie, then get your name on the notice-board to book your place!

TFC s Highland Fly Out TFC s plans to attend Saint Omer s 52nd Annual gathering in France were quickly revised due to the severe weather conditions forecast for the South Coast of England and Northern France. Undeterred, nine eager TFC pilots made use of two Piper Warriors and one Cessna 172 reserved for the weekend and set course for Inverness. The IMC trained pilots routed direct Dundee to Inverness, whilst the valiant VFR pilots set course for Huntly before taking a 90 degree turn to port (overhead Sandy s uncle s farm) towards Inverness. After a very warm welcome from the Highland Flying Club we appreciated a hearty plate of Scotch Broth before tracking VFR along the Great Glen - Loch Ness - Loch Lochy - Fort William - Loch Linnhe where we witnessed some of the most breathtaking scenery. Avgas, Jammy Dodgers and a tricky crosswind at Oban ensured we were ready to tackle anything. We were then rewarded with the most astounding scenery flying over the Isle of Mull, Iona, Tiree and Coll - the beaches look more Caribbean, than the Western Isles. Just to add a more glamour to our adventure, we were thrilled to hear former Tayside Instructor Almu on Scottish Information s ATC Radio, whilst piloting a Loganair Saab inbound to Glasgow. Anyone lucky enough to fly in this part of the Scotland will realise that it is heaven sent, the tranquillity, freedom of space - very special from 1500ft.

October 2008 TFC s Highland Fly Out The evening was spent at the Glenforsa Hotel on Mull. Our aviation hosts, Brendan and Allison Walsh, treated us to the best steak on Mull, and one of the best sunsets ever witnessed from their restaurant. The next morning we refuelled at Oban and headed in a northerly direction to take in the views of Morar, Mallaig, Isle of Skye before landed at Plockton, the infamous town of Hamish MacBeth. We didn t see Hamish or wee Jock, but we did meet a number Foresters and Bog Trotters who apparently frequent Plocton s airfield during the month of September. Flying around Scotland s West Coast is simply magical. We also benefitted from having a good crew in each aircraft and we all used the traditional navigational techniques and our GPS gadgets. Our planned route to Stornoway was abandoned when strong winds, rain and a low cloud-base prevailed. However, a planned diversion to Oban provided an excellent choice of location for our second overnight stay and the heroic stories around the Falls of Lora Hotel camp fire that evening even put Douglas Bader to. shame!!! The next morning saw us taxi and depart from Oban to track VFR for Inverary and over the hills towards Helensburgh, Loch Lomond, Dunblane, before landing at Perth and finally home to Dundee. Everyone had a fantastic time on this trip, and I for one can t wait for the next Fly-out. (See page 10) Drew Dudgeon

!! TAYSIDE FLYING CLUB S WINGS NIGHT Saturday 27th September 2008 Discovery Point was the setting for Tayside Flying Club s 2008 Wings Night. 60 TFC Members and guests enjoyed a welcome drink reception before dining in the Falcon Scott Suite. Tayside s Wings Night VIP guest was Pamela Patten, daughter of the late Evie Saunders. Having travelled from her home in Portugal to participate in TFC s Wings Night, Pamela enjoyed two flights aboard Piper Warrior G-EVIE and piloted Tayside s New Flight Simulator. Pamela also managed visits to St. Andrews, Gleneagles and Stirling, during her long weekend trip to Scotland. Pamela gave a short talk on the aviation achievements of her late mother and was clearly delighted that G-EVIE is being operated by Tayside Aviation and The Air League to fulfil Pilot Scholarships and encourage young pilots into a rewarding career in aviation. In addition to hosting the event, long-standing TFC Member John Brompton spoke about the superb work carried out by the charity CLIC SARGENT. TFC s Wings Night Auction and Raffle Prize Draw raised 880 which has been donated to this charity Tayside Aviation s Captain Pete Gilmour Commercial Pilot Trophy was presented to TFC Member and former Tayside Instructor, Barry Holt. On accepting the trophy from Jim Watt, Scot-Airways Captain Barry Holt was clearly delighted that Tayside Aviation had recognised his achievements and thrilled to have his name engraved alongside past recipients, Captain Pete Anderson and Lindsay Craig. On behalf of Tayside Flying Club, Chairman Gordon MacKenzie presented Lyall Smith with a Certificate to acknowledge Lyall s Excellent contribution to Tayside Flying Club. Which is very much appreciated by all...

" October 2008 TAYSIDE FLYING CLUB S WINGS NIGHT A big Thank You to all who helped make the evening a great success. It was good to see those who attended the Wings Night enjoying themselves. I particularly enjoyed seeing those people who had worked hard, and who had spent large sums of money learning the skills to become a pilot, being recognised for their achievements Even in this time of financial uncertainty, such is the hold that flying has on people, that they will acquire, maintain and improve their skills base, even when times are hard. So I would like, on behalf of the Tayside Flying Club committee, to say again WELL DONE to all those, who throughout the year gained qualifications and ratings Gordon MacKenzie Chairman Whats that chord? - Steve Murphy and Pamela Patten
