1 The Newsletter of Tayside Flying Club December 2009 Hi Flyers! It s been a challenging year for most of us, with the economic climate being much in our thoughts. Hopefully the grey skies are behind us and we can look forward in 2010 to blue skies and happy landings. I would like to thank John Brompton for all the help, encouragement and free aerobatic demonstrations he gave us all. John and the Tipsy Nipper are moving to a Squadron down South. All the best John and please come back and visit us at Dundee anytime - there s always a brew ready! It s also been another year of memorable trips within the UK, and I heard some pilots even made Europe their base! AGM - Tuesday 16th February 2010 at 7.30pm: we d like to see a decent turnout for this event. Remember its YOUR Flying club and you can voice your opinions at this meeting. 3 Page 3 Summer VFR Adventure By Neil Houghton (Part 1) raditionally, June is the month in which the Jersey Air Rally is held and after a T fantastic flying trip last year that took in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and finally the Rally itself, Gordon Mackenzie and I were keen to repeat the experience. After much discussion of the various options, we decided our goal for this year would be to start from the UK and reach the Mediterranean. The previous year we had rented an aircraft from Limoges in France, however this year we elected to hire from Flying Time in Shoreham and cross the channel ourselves. The aircraft in question was G-CCKH, a well equipped Diamondstar DA40 TDI with twin Garmin GNS430 s including a Stormscope a feature that would come in handy during the latter part of our trip We departed Edinburgh early on Saturday 20 th June on-board a British Airways flight to Gatwick, and from there we had a short train ride to Shoreham and taxi to the airport. Before letting us disappear with one of their aircraft for a week, Flying Time were keen for us to demonstrate our ability to bring it back in one piece, so check flights were the order of the day for us both. Having successfully completed PFL s, stalls, and steep turns near Bognor Regis and Butlins holiday camp, and then demonstrating all manner of approaches and landings in the circuit, we were deemed not to be a threat to ourselves, others, or more importantly the aircraft and were given the green light by our instructor to start our adventure the next day. After a pleasant nights stay in Brighton, we awoke to a glorious morning for our departure and hastily made our way to the airport before the weather decided to change its mind. Fortunately, Gordon had once again taken on the role of mobile ops department and had completed a flight plan, plog, NOTAM and weather check before I had even finished devouring my full English breakfast! After a weight and balance check and loading of our luggage, I flew the first leg, departing from Shoreham and flying along the coast in very pleasant VFR conditions, passing over the hotel we had stayed in the previous night, and coasting out to cross the channel for an uneventful arrival at Le Touquet, where we cleared customs.

It had been a great first days flying in fantastic weather and we enjoyed an excellent meal in the very pleasant town before heading back to the hotel for the next days planning session. The plan for the next day was for me to fly a single 2.5 hour leg to Angouleme. Once again the weather was on our side and we filled in our flight plan as the sole occupants of the very nice café in the airport terminal building, looking out across a seemingly deserted airfield in glorious sunshine. French airports usually have an excellent system of electronic terminals for checking weather and filing flight plans, however on this day we were to discover something that was to become a recurring feature of our trip it was knackered! No problem we thought, we had been to Deauville before, and knew that there was a computer in the flying club we would simply walk across the airfield on the designated walk way to the club and use that. Having done so and starting to make our way back to the terminal, we saw an angry looking man in suit and black shades accompanied by two armed customs officers striding purposefully in our direction. We (very slowly) reached for our passports and pilots licences and braced ourselves for the inevitable bollocking we were about to receive (fortunately delivered in English) for wandering around the airside of the airfield! Having established that we weren t terrorists in high-vis jackets, and that we had quite properly used the designated pathways, we were allowed to return to the aircraft and depart for Angouleme.

Next morning we arrived, ready to depart, to discover that the only other aircraft on the airfield was G-JADJ a Piper Archer which had been flown here by fellow Tayside Flying Club members Bob, Dave, and Penny who were taking their own scenic route to the Rally. There are many lanes of military low flying airspace that criss-cross much of France, and as our planned route crossed over several of them, we decided to take advantage of the good weather and get up above them all. As we spent the next couple of hours at around 6000ft, weaving lazily between the puffy cumulus clouds in the bright sunshine, we experienced one of those moments that I m sure all pilots must have had at some point where all the hassle, expense, and bureaucracy involved in flying melts away and you spend the rest of the day grinning like an idiot! Neil Houghton Having photographed the two aircraft together we set off on the next leg from Angouleme to Bergerac to be flown by Gordon and a second leg to Carcassonne to be flown by me. Bergerac turned out to be our least favourite airport that we were to visit during our trip an ugly collection of buildings with a very confusing layout. We spent a long time searching for someone to pay the landing fee to, and discovered once again that the flight planning terminal was out of action, so Gordon elected to file our flight plan online using his iphone whilst we ate lunch. 6 Page 6 Night Flying & Curry Evening As the winter nights approach have you thought about adding the night qualification to your Licence? Night flying is an enjoyable experience and a useful addition to your licence privileges. Those moving on to the CPL are reminded that the night qualification is a requirement and it is a lot easier to do it in the winter months than the summer! Tayside Aviation will be conducting night training throughout the winter period from Dundee Airport. The night flying programme will commence with a Night Flying & Curry Evening where pilots and students will have the opportunity to experience a dual night flight followed by a warming curry. There is no fixed date for the event yet. As soon as the forecast indicates a suitable evening, we will contact those interested. The night training syllabus consists of:- 2 3 hours of briefings. 5 hours of flight at night to include:- Dual (min 3 hours) Night familiarisation Night cross country (min 1 hour) Night circuits Solo 5 full stop landings If you are interested in the Night Qualification or would just like to experience a flight by night, please add your name and details to the list on the notice board in Clubhouse, and join us for the Night Flying and Curry evening. 8 Page 8 Page 8 The Night Before Christmas -- Aviation Style 'Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the ramp, Not an airplane was stirring, not even a Champ. The aircraft were fastened to tie downs with care, In hopes that come morning, they all would be there. The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots, With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots. I slumped at the fuel desk, the fuel barn now shut And settled down comfortably, just resting my butt. The radio lit up with a loud noise and chatter, I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter. A voice clearly heard over static and snow, Called for clearance to land at the airport below. He barked his transmission so lively and quick, I sworn that the call sign he used was "St. Nick". I ran to the panel to turn up the lights, The better to welcome this magical flight. He called his position, no room for denial, "St. Nicholas One, turnin' left onto final." Then what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer! With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came, As he passed all the fixes, he called them by name: "Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun! On Comet! On Cupid!" What pills was he takin'? While controllers were sittin', and scratchin' their head, They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread. The message they left was both urgent and dour: "When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower." He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking, He took a left at Charlie and taxied to parking. He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh Then stopped on the ramp with a jolly Ho, Ho Ho!

9 Page 9 Page 9 The Night Before Christmas -- Aviation Style Continued He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk, I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks. His helmet and goggles were covered with frost, And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust. His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale, And he puffed on a pipe, but he did not inhale. His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly, His boots were as black as a crop-duster's belly. He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red, And he asked me to fill it, with hundred low-lead. He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump, I knew he was anxious for drainin' the sump. I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work, I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk. He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief, Then he picked up the phone for a Flight Service brief. I thought as he silently wrote in his log, These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog. He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear, Then put on his headset, and I heard him yell, "Clear!" He laid a finger on the button: push-to-talk, He called up the tower for clearance and squawk. "Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction, Turn right three-two-zero at pilot's discretion" He sped down the runway, the best of the best, "Your traffic's a Grumman, inbound from the west." Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed thru the night, "Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight."

The car park charges will assist the Airport in retaining all the services it currently provides.
