1 Hi Flyers We now have 163 Members of Tayside Flying Club, which is a fantastic amount of people who all share our love of aviation. All members are welcome to attend the TFC - AGM on 17th February Everyone is actively encouraged to participate in all aspects of Tayside Flying Club. Remember, this is Your Club, if you have an aviation related question, criticism or burning ambition to see Ben Nevis from above, then please ask any committee memb er or se nd m e a n . We will endeavour to solve the problem or make it happen!! Next years calendar already has quite a few dates worthy of mention, especially the Flyouts. Its essential to get your name on the list as early as possible to avoid disappointment. More regular updates related to these events can be found on the notice-board. 3 !# TFC Chairmans Message 2008 Gordon MacKenzie What a year! Fuel prices went through the roof, the weather was unkind, and latterly the credit crunch hit us, and yet, despite all these discouragements, the members of Tayside Flying Club continue to fly. What is the mysterious and magical property that flying possesses that grabs people s imagination and desires, and makes them want to repeat the experience? Is it the technical challenge of learning a new and demanding skill? Is it the freedom of moving through the air like a bird, high above the ground? Is it the feeling of pride of belonging to a very exclusive group of individuals who have worked hard to become pilots? Perhaps it is all of these and more. I don t know what it is that keeps you coming back for more, and more, and more of this drug we call flying. I can only hope that despite the difficult times that seem to be ahead of us, that you continue to remember the reasons and emotions that drove you to take up flying in the first place, and re-apply yourself in 2009 to maintaining that enthusiasm for flying light aircraft. To help you along, here s my wish list that I m sending to Santa: 1. Really, really good weather (failing that CAVOK would do) 2. Good aircraft availability 3. Good flying companions 4. All of the above, and some maybe some more really good weather? I promise to be a very good boy. Honest.! I look forward to seeing you all next year, in the clubhouse, and out flying! 4 !$ Tips for Avoiding Infringements 1. NOTAM Checking Check 'NOTAM's before flying ( Learn to use an efficient method such as 'narrow route brief'and make best use of 'saved briefings', which can be re-run at later dates to cut down checking time. If using a commercial or graphical product, do not put the plotted graphic printed on a clubroom wall without the 'not plottable'list displayed just as prominently. 2. Restrictions of Flying To look ahead, planned restrictions are issued as Air Information Circulars on For checking just prior to flight, the number ( from abroad) will give the very latest situation. 3. Transit Routes During planning for any zone transit, think about your routing in relation to the active runway alignment. You are much more likely to get a crossing approved over the runway if your track is perpendicular to it than aligned with it. There are also useful airspace guides written by local ATC for most of the CTRs in the UK, giving tips, photos, and preferred routings - they are all on the FlyOnTrack website, available via 4. Plan B When planning a route including a controlled airspace crossing, always have plan B to avoid it too. If you wish to transit controlled airspace or a zone, think about what you need to say in advance and call the appropriate Air Traffic Control (ATC) unit at ten nautical miles or five minutes flying time from the airspace boundary to give notice. Make a decision checkpoint on where to take this avoidance route if a clearance is not possible. It's much easier to get round a block of airspace from a few miles distant than it is to successfully divert around tight up to the boundary. Remember to plan time and fuel calculations using the longer route. 5. Radio Calls Thinking before you transmit. Using the correct radio phraseology helps air traffic control to help you and sounds more professional! A handy free kneeboard insert is available from the CAA or from the Tips tab. It will help you form any request for a zone crossing by giving you a 'template' mask to slot your words into. 6. Specific Clearance You need a formal specific clearance to enter or cross controlled airspace. The instruction Standby, or the provision of a transponder squawk, or even the provision of any type of service is not an ATC clearance. An instruction to Remain Outside Controlled Airspace on the first reply from the controller does not mean your transit is already refused, it merely warns you not to enter until a formal clearance and routing is agreed.

5 !% TFC Cost Share Flying Cost Share Flying is growing in popularity throughout the U.K. and TFC is fortunate to have a number of active members who are available to be your flying buddy. Student PPL s, low hours NPPL s, low hours PPL s TFC Cost Sharing is available to all of our members. Doesn t matter if you don t have a current licence, Doesn t matter if you don t have a current medical. Doesn t matter if you ve not flown for ages.treat yourself to a flight and enjoy the thrill of flying again. TFC will buddy you up with an experienced pilot who flies regularly and all of the participants simply share the cost. Examples Three up in a Piper Warrior will simply cost each participant 25 for a 30 minute flight. Two up in a Piper Warrior will simply cost each participant 35 for a 30 minute flight. Treat yourself to a trip to Oban from Dundee, 3 in a Warrior would cost 99 per person. Ask for details) TFC Student PPL Eric Dawson now CPL Congratulations to Eric Dawson on passing his Commercial Pilots Licence Skills Test on Monday 24th November Eric is an ATPL Student with KLM s Flight Academy and we understand Eric will shortly commence his Instrument, Multi Engine and MCC Ratings. Jerry, Wykie and Colin Dawson will all be thrilled on hearing of Eric s achievement!!! As an 18 year old Student Pilot, Eric was a TFC Crew Member who participated in our 2007 VFR Adventure to Jersey. Clearly, being lost en-route to Compton Abbas (with a Tayside Instructor acting as Pilot in Command) didn t put Eric off a career as a Professional Pilot. Every flight is a lesson. Well done Eric Dawson.

Available in all sizes / Grey or Blue - from the Ops desk, TFC Committee members or wings@taysideflyingclub.org.uk Adult Size 15 Childrens size 11 Tayside Operations Desk We welcome Keith Edmunds to the role of Flying School Administrator based at Dundee Keith Edmunds joined Tayside Aviation in October 2008, with the unenviable task of following in Linda s very capable footsteps. Previously an airborne electronics wizard on the RAF Nimrod Force commonly known as the kipper fleet Keith claims he can still send and receive Morse code at many words per minute as well as telling the difference between a whale burp and Red October in a Gale Force Nine. After 27 years, and 5000 hours, counting fishing boats and looking for missing yachts, Keith retired from the RAF in Following up on a latent computer hobby during a resettlement course, Keith somehow ended up with job working for Dell as a field service technician. Further IT jobs followed before he ended up working for EDS on the RAF AMPA system. Whilst delivering AMPA to the C130, Merlin and Typhoon, Keith spent time at Benson, Coningsby and Lyneham; which was weird because he never visited any of those bases during 27 years in the mob! He also alternated from 45 degrees in Saudi, working with the RSAF Tornado, to minus 30 degrees in Cold Lake, Alberta, working with the RCAF Hawk. Keith lives with his wife Lynda in the Ferry and says he is delighted to be at long last working with the flying fraternity without having to travel 500 miles to work each day. There are also rumours of a PPL in the summer watch this space.
