P a g e 3 Hi Flyers Hopefully Summer has arrived with a passion and were ready to take the next step by jumping into an Aircraft and flying to one of those places you ve been thinking about all Winter. To wet your appetite, we ve arranged some tasty Fly-outs, Fly-in s, BBQ s, Open Days, Aviation Museum visits & Airshows, all we need is you presence. The most important aspect of a Flying club, is its members. They can create the buzz that lifts spirits off the ground, so please attend as many of the events as you can - you will have a million miles of Fun. So what s been happening around planet Tayside? You may have noticed that some of the Instructors have departed the circuit and joined Loganair as 1st Officers, which then heralds the arrival of some new instructors - Welcome. Tayside s Pilot placement program ensures it will be a regular event that sadly we have to say goodbye to our pilots as they join the airline. Montse has just left to join the scheme with Loganair but will return to us late July for a few months. Whilst awaiting a position she starts the SAAB 340 type rating course this week. Montse has loved her time with Tayside and leaves with 900 hrs. Russell Mounce has also been successful in getting selected for Loganair on 18 th June. Melissa van Geldere will join Loganair in August Congratulations & well deserved to all who have made the Giant Leap into the Airline World. Remember to come back & visit us regularly, especially if you wear your Uniform!!

P a g e 4 The new Instructor chappies have been in place for a few months now and are a Multi-National force that would grace any Squadron: They are... Liam Kelly ( Malta) Henri Kiilunen (Finland) Neil Walker ( from the other side, Glasgow) Jose Maria Rodriguez Fernandez De Liencres is our FI instructor and one of the longest name badges we ve ever printed. Soon to start with us will be Juan Gamundi from Spain, So everyone can remember his name He will become Tayside Delta 11 and will be called that every day except a Monday. Also soon to start at Fife will be Anne Schmuler from Holland but it s not true that she will pay for half your flight. A New addition to the Fleet is a Warrior G-BGKS which is based at Fife. Shiny Silver & Blue paint job, & fully refurbished leather interior (very nice). Equipped with Garmin 430 GPS and Garmin Aera 500 GPS. Available to hire & look Cool!

P a g e 5 There is currently a project involved in looking at adding premises to the existing club + hangers, this would allow us to have a larger clubhouse & more rooms available for instruction / flight planning, and the availability to hanger the aircraft fleet. Nothing concrete to report at this stage but it would definitely be a welcome addition to Tayside Flying Club. There are so many organised Fly-Outs that you really need to sample one or all of them! Its a great chance to meet club members & experience flying to different locations and share the cost!!! Details in this Flyer and TFC Website Yearly Membership fee s due - you can apply online at the TFC Website. The fee remains the same price whether you join in January or in June. If you pay fee s now your membership is valid till the end of December Parked outside the Flying club is a shiny new Warrior III G-BXOJ, which Tayside bought for instruction and touring. Everyone is required to take a 15 minute ground brief to understand how to operate the new Kit before you can fly her. She is an absolutely beautiful aircraft to fly & will be a favourite for Summer touring! And last but not least. We now have Royalty among us! Marjan Bledowski attended a formal gathering in London whereby he met Prince Philip and received an award from Him. Marjan has flown in excess of Hours! WoW! Some say that he now has a title, Knight of the Trim Wheel and has exclusive Royal rights such as sending cadets to the Tower, having afternoon tea whenever he feels the need, He will now be called Sir at all times. He will give you a gentle wave only if He recognises a Salute or a Bow when he enters the room. Joking aside, Congratulations Marjan! This is an exceptional Award to an exceptional fellow and well deserved! ( I hope I have now redeemed myself from Sir Marjans Backlash )

P a g e 6 Tayside Aviation, Scotland s largest flying school based at Dundee, were delighted to have one of their flying instructors receive an award from HRH Duke of Edinburgh. Marjan Bledowski was presented with an Illuminated Scroll from the Duke of Edinburgh at an award ceremony held in St James Palace Thursday 31 st May This prestigious award is from The Air League in recognition of services to flying training and outstanding flying instruction with young students. The Duke of Edinburgh is Patron of the Air League and Marjan and his wife Joyce from Arbroath were thrilled to receive the award and to meet HRH in such a magnificent setting. Marjan who turned 60 last year has been a flying instructor with Tayside Aviation for 24 years and has amassed 14,000 hours flying experience. In his time he has sent over 700 students on their first solo flight, many of whom now fly with airlines all over the world. Tayside Aviation also deliver the RAF Air Cadet Pilot Scheme at Dundee and Marjan is the Chief Flying Instructor for the RAF scholarship programme. Marjan has also trained over 1200 Air cadets and has trained pilots for the Hong Kong search and rescue services. Tayside Aviation s Managing Director, James Watt said I am very proud that Marjan has received this recognition from The Air League. He is an outstanding flying instructor who has never lost his drive and enthusiasm to help students achieve their goal of becoming a pilot.

P a g e 10 Congratulations to Mike for these excellent adventure piccies of Tayside Teds visit to Wick airport in May. Ted enjoyed his furthest journey to date, and commented on the very smooth landing at Wick & tasty Burger & chips at Inverness. Not bad for a days work! One Hours Free flying will be credited to your Tayside Account - Well done Mike!

P a g e 11 Despite countless cancellations, I finally managed to complete my qualifying cross country on Saturday the 31 st of March. What an experience! I decided on the following route: Monikie-Montrose-Blairgowrie-Dunning-Dunblane- Cumbernauld-Polmont-Bridges-Kelty-Fife-Crail-Broughtly Castle-Dundee. I chose this route as it would take me through various different types of airspace and would be a good opportunity for me to practice my RT. My QXC slot was booked for 12.30pm so I had plenty of time in the morning to incorporate the weather into my flight plan and make some final calculations. I checked the METARS and TAFS before leaving for the airport and it was showing a northerly wind which was never a good sign as there is always turbulence and of course a cross wind at Dundee. I was unsure whether to go ahead with the flight or not, so I decided to speak to an instructor who had already flown that day and could let me know if I was capable of completing the whole route. I then set off for Dundee with the thought that it may not happen. Luckily I received a phone call from Melissa telling me that conditions were good enough for me to fly and that she was happy to sign me off. I was so happy, after numerous cancellations I was finally going to do my Cross Country! Once I arrived at the airport, I done the aircraft walk round and then Hendry kindly filled the aircraft up to full tanks. After a briefing from Melissa, she signed me off and I was on my way to the aircraft. It was so exciting! I taxied out to the south side of the apron, finished the power checks, and ATC told me to backtrack and line up runway 09. I was sitting on the runway, and then I was cleared for takeoff. I love the part when you apply full power and then you get pushed back in you seat! I rotated and there was quite a bit of turbulence up to about 1500ft because of the north wind however when I arrived at Monikie it settled down and there was only a bit of turbulence here and there. After leveling off at 3000ft, I done a FREDA check then set course to Montrose, I had to make a small track correction at the half way point because I was slightly off track. Then, Montrose came into sight and I passed over it at my ETA. After that, I turned towards Blairgowrie and contacted Scottish Information and passed them my flight details. I think the wind was slightly different to that which was planed as when I arrived at the quarter way marker, I was much earlier than expected and therefore had to adjust my ETA for Blairgowrie. After flying to the West of Perth and reaching Dunning, I turned to fly to Dunblane, I really like this part because when you re flying to Dunblane, there are only a couple of towns and you have mountains on either side in which there is not much in the way of civilization, but as soon as you turn from Dunblane to Cumbernauld, it s like a different world: Seeing all of Stirling, the Wallace Monument, busy motorways, factories it s great! I then contacted Cumbernauld radio and was told that there was only one other aircraft in the circuit so I decided to enter downwind for runway 08 instead of making an overhead join. I was relieved when I saw the windsock and it was almost completely dead so the landing turned out to be very nice!

P a g e 12 After vacating the runway, I was told where to park, then finished the shutdown checks and went up to the air traffic control tower to pay my landing fee, I got a nice surprise when the controller gave me club rates! I then went out to the aircraft and done a walk round before strapping in and starting up. By this time, the wind had picked up considerably and there was now a full crosswind on takeoff. After departing, there was a lot of turbulence over the industrial area towards the end of the runway but after this point it was a smooth climb up to 1800ft. I made a zone transit to route through Edinburgh controlled airspace to Fife, and as a result I had to quickly change frequency and tell Edinburgh my intentions as it s not long after takeoff before you arrive at the Polmont VRP. I was then told to orbit over Falkirk as Edinburgh ATC were quite busy so I made around 4 orbits then I was cleared into their airspace and was routing towards the bridges. This is the part I love, as you fly almost parallel to the approach into Edinburgh and you hear all the commercial traffic on the radio and I also saw a Ryanair on the approach path to land. After reaching Kelty, I changed frequency to Fife radio and told them I was making an overhead join for runway 07, the wind sock was really strong and the runway at Fife is half the length of that at Dundee so I was ready incase of a go around. Luckily I managed to land first time but there were quite a few aircraft making go arounds. I vacated the runway and taxied to the parking area. I then shutdown the aircraft and went to see the ground controller to sign my sheet. After that I made a quick call to Tayside Aviation to let them know I d landed safely. Afterwards, I went out to the aircraft and done another brief walk round, then started up and taxied out to do the power checks. When I was in the plane, there were cars parked and people watching me as I taxied, I remember thinking how only a few years ago, I was in their position watching other aircraft take off, but now I was actually at the controls! I waited for an aircraft to touchdown then I taxied onto the runway. The wind was still quite strong on take off but I managed to keep straight down the runway until lift off, then I flew overhead at 2000ft and joined my flight plan route to Crail. When I got to Largo, I contacted Leuchars and requested MATZ penetration and received my clearance to fly from Crail to Broughty Castle. As I passed the runway at Leuchars, I was told to contact Dundee to get my rejoin instructions to land, once I left the MATZ, I turned left and entered a downwind leg for runway 09. I was then finals to land and there was a 10kt x-wind which made for a challenging approach, but I managed to land safely and I was cleared to vacate via taxiway alpha. It was at this point where I was so excited that I d managed to fly 150nm in quite challenging conditions and bring the plane back to Dundee safely. I felt so happy. I got out the aircraft and Melissa was there to congratulate me, then we done the paperwork and had a quick de-brief. I had now completed my Cross Country and couldn t stop taking about it for days after. It was just such an amazing experience which I ll never forget. Tom Hall

P a g e 13 A SCOTS teenager is on cloud nine after gaining his private pilot licence at the tender age of 17. Tom Hall is believed to be the youngest pilot in Scotland after gaining his licence earlier this month. The Perth schoolboy has been flying since he was just 10 years old. Tom has since flown across Scotland and hopes to become a commercial pilot in the future Gaining the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) means he can now undertake solo journeys an transport passengers in certain classes of aircraft. Tom said: It began when I was 10 years old and my parents brought a trial lesson at Tayside Aviation for my birthday. I really enjoyed it and decided then that I wanted to be a pilot. I had a lesson every so often but when I turned 14, I could officially start to log my hours towards my licence and this was the time I really began to take it seriously. I tried to have a flying lesson every month, although sometimes this was not always possible due to the weather conditions. Although not old enough to vote, Tom flew solo for the first time on his 16th birthday in December Tom said: I always dreamed of flying solo on my 16th birthday as this is the youngest possible age to achieve this. In December 2010, this dream was achieved and I managed to do my first solo flight without an instructor being in the aircraft. It was so exciting as it was the first time I was pilot in command. I will always remember the weird feeling looking to my right and seeing that no one was there. As I taxied off the runway the controller congratulated me on my first solo. It felt amazing. Pressure In addition to the flying lessons, Tom, a sixth-year pupil at Perth High School, had to take several difficult exams before he could get his licence. He said: To gain my PPL I also had to pass seven written exams, covering a vast amount of subjects from air law and meteorology to human performance. These were very difficult exams, plus I also had the pressure of studying for my school exams at the same time. After spending January clocking up the solo hours needed to take his test Tom was ready to sit his skills test. He said: This is the part where I fly with an examiner and I am tested on everything I have learned. The flying test lasted for two hours 10 minutes and I was really tired by the end, but as soon as I was told that I d passed, I was on cloud nine as I d finally achieved what I d always dreamed of. I hope to continue my training with Tayside Aviation and one day become a commercial pilot, but for now I need to start learning how to drive. A spokesman for Tayside Aviation said: Tom is as keen as mustard and has been from the moment he came in here. He s been a model pupil and we re delighted for him. We can t recall anyone younger doing this 17 is a very, very good age to complete the licence.

P a g e 14 Tom pictured with Dad Geoff on the return of their 1st Flight together. Congratulations Tom.

P a g e You may have revelled in awe when you saw the new Tayside Coat of Arms and wondered what it meant / are we moving to Cardiff? Well, do not fret my friends, I shall explain to the best of my ability. Essentially it is an amalgam of Dundee cities coat of arms and introducing in aviation what Dundee remains famous for ; The nonstop flight to south Africa in 1938 of the Mercury and Maia aircraft which were tested and launched from Dundee. So on the CoA you will see the dragons guarding Dundee and a modified shield with TA old logo and the piggy back Mercury and Maia. I Aim High

P a g e 16 For more details ABCT unveiled two new memorials over the weekend of 19th/20th May in Angus. The first was at the former RAF Montrose where all the volunteers who staff the Montrose Air station Heritage centre were most helpful and welcoming. The event was marked by a dedication by the Rev Dr Ian McLean, the Minister of Old & St Andrews Church of Scotland; Gordon Miller, of the Angus branch of RAFA was the standard-bearer. After the event ABCT's Director Kenneth Bannerman and Jill Brown were given a tour of the fantastic museum which is extensive and extremely well-organised. It is a fascinating place in which you can easily spend a couple of hours looking at the amazing exhibits, asking questions of the extremely knowledgeable volunteers, and reading about the characters based there, not forgetting Bamse, the only dog during WW2 to receive a medal during WW2 for heroism! The second unveiling was at Tealing, on the outskirts of Dundee, where the Community Council had planned a great afternoon. The village hall was decorated for the occasion and refreshments provided. Thanks to the retired Bishop of Brechin, Dr Ted Luscombe as well as piper Ross Henderson of Fintry Pipe Band. We were honoured too to be in the company of former WAAF members Mabel Langlands and Margaret Erskine, both of whom were based at Tealing Airfield. Mabel actually plotted Molotov's landing in the Operations Room and looks amazing for 90 years of age, as does Margaret! The mystery surrounding the onward travel of Russia's Foreign Minister, Vyacheslav Molotov, to London, is an intriguing one and thanks to Sandra Burke, Community Councillor, who has not only done a lot of research into Molotov's arrival but also put in a great deal of effort to make sure the unveiling was a special occasion. We must also thank pilots Drew Dudgeon and Jim Watt of Tayside Aviation for providing a great flyover at each unveiling. Kenneth Bannerman RAF Montrose

P a g e 17 If your planning on Flying in or around London during the Olympics Remember there are major restrictions in place Once you ve landed back at Dundee can you please make sure that the aircraft has enough fuel for the next flight? Some peeps are leaving the tanks on the rather low side, & this is causing the next customer having to wait while the aircraft is being re-fuelled. Don t be Cruel Remember & Re-Fuel!

P a g e 18 The amount of preparation that goes into organising a fly-out cannot be underestimated: Call the visiting flying club chairman and ask if there s anything already planned at the airfield for your big day to fly there? Call diversion airfields to see if they are open? See what airfields have fuel? Print a colour poster to advertise the event, everyone asking if they want to come along? Put the advert in the forums, Hold a planning meeting, put lines on maps, contact the Special branch for permission to fly there, laminate Frequency s & procedures for entry / exit at the airfield, Book aircraft & organise crews & also answer tons of s from people who want to come along but, don't have aircraft! Then just when you pause for breath, the weather decides its time for the plants to enjoy a drink - and all of the above has gone to waste! But every now and again, it all goes to plan, and the sweet smell of success can be sampled like a fine Liqueur. The planned May trip to Newtownards in Northern Ireland was one of the Napoleon Brandy tasting trips that went according to plan. ( Ah Bliss... ) Everyone met at the club early bells, covers taken off, Aircraft were fuelled, A checks & walk around complete - and Bingo, the Sun was out! Its now Time for the group photo before we leave Dundee and the essential visit to the little boys room to save using the portable Little John that s as useful as a fish needing a Bicycle. One last group hug then were off! Route: Dundee - Dunblane - Loch Lomond - Helensburgh - Dunoon - Rothesay - Isle of Arran - Campbeltown - Coast out at the Mull of Kintyre... Oh Mist rolling in from the sea, then its a hop over to Northern Irelands North East coast, Cushendall - then track south along the coast to Larne, Whitehead, Bangor and then slightly inland to Newtownards.

P a g e 19 For anyone that s not flown to NI, then I can highly recommend it. The RT around Belfast increases constantly, and you really need to be on your toes with frequency changes and read backs. But, with careful planning and the combined efforts of a good crew - its a piece of cake! Our journey time was two hours and five minutes, and despite being overtaken at the Kilbrannan sound by Evie, we still landed safely at Newtownards before the old girl did! Newtownards airfield has three runways ( or 6 ) and we were given Runway 26 to land. On the downwind leg we were then told the wind had changed & did we want runway 22 instead? This being the longest runway we were more than happy to accept, and duly made a greaser of a landing, much to the delight of our crew and the appreciative people watching from the clubhouse. Loch Lomond Campbeltown and Machrihanish Airfield You cant grumble at the ten quid landing fee, Northern Irish hospitality at its best. We then headed into the Flying club which has really fantastic facilities & a marvellous Cafe where we had a tasty lunch. Its now time to sit back, relax and watch the multitude of helicopters, motor gliders, Warriors, Cessnas, all doing circuits. Its a really busy airfield & we spoke with flyers from England, Wales and Ireland who make regular trips there. With the wind picking up and the sight of very black clouds coming in from the west, we decided it was time for Leg 2 which our planned route back was a visit to Carlisle airfield. A phone call for PPR revealed Carlisle was temporarily closed at the time we wanted to land, so to kill some time we sampled another cuppa and another check of the maps / route / walk round to see the aircraft was in tip top condition.

Pa ge 20 The three Tayside aircraft then departed Newtownards, one heading back direct to Dundee, whilst the other two aircraft chose an Easterly track to Carlisle, albeit one going North of the Solway Firth and one going South. We coasted out at the Copeland islands and set course for Stranraer, Castle Douglas, Gretna VRP, all pretty straight forward stuff. The two Warriors landed at Carlisle and headed for more cups of tea then a look at the Vulcan bomber which is situated near the control tower. Its one of those aircraft that leaves quite an impression on you once you see her, if you ever have the chance to go and take a look, do so, and mightily impressed you will be! Remember and ask for Request Engine start, as Carlisle like this type of witty banter - if you don't ask you ll still be waiting on the apron as we speak!!! We took off and tracked on a Northerly route going through all the Border towns of Hawick and Galashiels before coasting out at North Berwick ( amidst a perfect calm sunny early evening ) to Earlsferry. Then through the Matz and safely back to Dundee. We all had a fantastic day in its entirety. All crews worked well as a team & I m sure that we all learned something be it, Navigation, Radio work, ETA s, or flying in unfamiliar surroundings. This is the kind of trip that people develop their skills, and lose any fear of landing at a different airfield. Nine people, three aircraft, three countries visited all in a day! As for the next sortie, Count me in, & I hope you can join us too... Mull of Kintyre Hot Shots of Newtownards

P a g e 25 Dundee Airport from the East CAA announces change to night flying regulations A change to night flying regulations will enable pilots to operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) during hours of darkness. Currently, civil aircraft flying in the UK must comply with Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), but the CAA has announced that from 8 June 2012 this requirement will be removed. As a result, pilots will be able to choose whether to fly VFR or IFR. Visual Flight Rules are an internationally agreed standard set of operating rules designed to help prevent collisions between aircraft and the ground. It ensures that pilots fly in weather conditions that allow them to see a potential collision and take action to avoid it. Instrument Flight Rules are a more restrictive set of internationally agreed operating rules. They include additional measures to help prevent collisions between aircraft - particularly when flying in weather conditions where pilots may not be able to see other aircraft or obstacles and in areas with high volumes of traffic. The changes have been made in order to take into account new and upcoming European Aviation Safety Agency Regulations that cover pilot licensing and rules of the air. The CAA has said that the majority of requirements for VFR at night are similar to existing Instrument Flight Rules. This means that UK pilots will be able to continue flying at night, as long as they hold a valid Night Rating or Qualification. Those who hold an Instrument Rating or IMC Rating will continue to have to choice of flying IFR at night.

P a g e 26 Relax outside & enjoy some tasty BBQ food & some Aviation chat with friends. Whenever its Hot then its time for a BBQ. Dates throughout the Summer evenings and weekends. Send your entry to Drew@Taysideflyingclub.co.uk One Lucky person will win the Monthly draw, which will be decided by: Teds Furthest Destination Or Teds Most Unusual Destination ( in a Tayside Aircraft )

P a g e 28 This Photo is a Birds eye view of Tayside Aviation from above. After your flight when parking the aircraft - can you position your aircraft as per the photo above. ( But don't park in the Avgas area) The plan is to create enough space for incoming and departing aircrafts convenience. The most notable change is to Not park any aircraft on the grass near the taxiway where the white line has been drawn above. Appreciated...

P a g e 29 Congratulations To Marjan Bledowski for completing his th Flying Hour! Some very Important changes are being made by EASA regarding changes to All Pilots License s in that come into effect in the UK in 2012, the changes will affect us all. Rather than trying to explain the changes ( there are basically so many ) I d rather give you the link to a Website that will explain it all in 22 pages of easy reading in its Quick Guide.

P a g e 30 One of the highlights on the aviation calendar is the Leuchars Air-show. It has something of interest for the entire family to enjoy. Tayside Aviation will have a stand at the show with at least three static aircraft on display to the public. If you want to spend some time on the stand handing out leaflets to the public & showing potential aviators around the aircraft - then speak to Jim Watt, as he may reward your efforts by giving you an Entry pass for Free!!!

P a g e 31 AeroExpo is a fantastic show based at Sywell airfield in Northampton annually in May. Its aim is to show you the latest GA Aircraft, gadgets and Gizmos on offer in today s market. Four of us from Tayside made the pilgrimage to Northampton, and was greeted with 80 degree heat, blue skies and an excellent show. If any of the Tayside flock are ever thinking about buying anything from a brand new aircraft, or want to try out anything from a pair of Aviator sunglasses to viewing the latest Navigation gizmos on offer, then this is the show for you. Not only can you view all the latest Aviation gadgets but, you will be able to try them out to see if they suit your needs? As usual, the offer to attend all these kind of events are put on the Forums section of Taysideflyingclub.co.uk Feel free to come along as you will no doubt have an amazing time. The photo is of Drew & the two lovely ladies who greeted us at the entrance to AeroExpo. I didn't catch their names but was visual with them on approach!

P a g e 32 J o i n a s a n a d u l t v o l u n t e e r Over 20? Seeking a new challenge? Would you like to develop skills, leadership qualities and gain qualifications too? At Air Cadets, we constantly assess our past achievements, implement changes to meet the challenges of today and make plans for the future. And a huge part of that planning is you. As the backbone of our organisation we're always on the look out for high-calibre individuals to become volunteers, helping to run the activities that play such an important role in the lives of our young members. All kinds of people make up our volunteer staff, coming from a range of backgrounds and interests. Obviously if you have direct experience of working with young people, or any relevant skills such as flying or gliding, you would be particularly welcome. These aren't essential though, as we will train and support you at every stage. That said, you'll have some personal qualities that are essential, such as patience, maturity and responsibility along with an understanding of young people and their needs. You needn't be an athlete, but a good level of physical fitness also helps to ensure you can keep up with the cadets! Are you Officer or SNCO material? We rely on our volunteers to help us operate as effectively as possible. Being well organised is an obvious must, ideally with good managerial and administrative skills, and an ability to listen to problems and deal with them tactfully and appropriately. Really show your skills in these areas and you could end up taking on more responsibility and moving up through the ranks as an officer or senior non-commissioned officer (SNCO). Of course, first you have to join as a Civilian Instructor and then have selection interviews at Wing HQs and Regional HQs but we guide you through that if you have the potential then we ll spot it! The above is from the Air Cadets website where more information can be found. The BIG QUESTION FOR MOST IS: Attendance on the unit! We operate 2 nights a week and various weekends. For Civilian Instructors the only expectation is that they attend as often as they can, no minimum number evenings. Just come down and help the cadets with the activity that you can provide. Uniformed staff are expected to attend four parade evenings minimum (City of Dundee) Squadron contact information: Flt Lt Alistair Murray Commanding Officer oc.1232@aircadets.org 1232 Sqn meets: Mondays and Thursdays from 1900 to 2130 hours Craigiebarn Road, Dundee DD4 7PH

There is always a chance to do volunteer work at weekends to help with refuelling. Ask at the Operations desk to become trained in this operation TFC Website - We now currently have 115 members signed up / Registered to the site. So to all of those who are too shy, come on in the waters lovely... Out of Hours Permits - Have been bought for Highlands and Islands & Argyll and Bute Airfields. This really opens up Scotland for Tayside Aircraft, so if you fancy travelling a bit further and experiencing some fantastic locations - then the skies the limit - enjoy! Airside: There is now a requirement from the Airport Manager to have Photo I.D. authority to be airside. Tayside will issue each member an Airside I.D. Card, lanyard and a plastic holder for a 5. Remember the next time your at the club to give Bernadette a Passport Sized Photo of yourself and she ll add it to the I.D. Card which you ll then have to wear airside. Membership forms for rather than using pen and paper, use the membership form located on the Taysideflyingclub.co.uk Website. Once completed, you can then add it to Bernadette - Job Done. The price is 98 in total whether you join in January 2012 or July Aircraft Folders - If you take an aircraft for a land away remember and take the appropriate Aircraft Folder with you. If your flying around the local area then put the Aircraft folder on the Top shelf before you leave - and then put it in the bottom shelf when you return. This way Operations will know whether your Aircraft is in the air or on the ground?

If you enjoy watching low level Tornado bombing practice runs, or Tornado s skimming above the ocean or through the Falkland islands then this would have been the night for you to attend. Sue Freemans talk was totally interesting and made quite an impression to everyone in attendance. Why not come along to the next Talk night at Fife - I always advertise them on the Forum section - You ll genuinely enjoy the hospitality and Presentation. Fife also hosted a First Aid night, whereby me and nine others got taught CPR, how to aid someone who s choking, mouth to mouth resuscitation - all taught from the Scottish Ambulance Service. Thanks for such an excellent and informative evening. I ve managed to organise 2 consecutive monthly trips to Edinburgh control Tower and a presentation form those nice people at Nats. As a result, we have 20 Tayside Flyers who now have full confidence about entering Edinburgh Airspace in the correct manner, and exiting without any fear! Both trips were well attended - Big thanks to James Hogg from Nats for hosting these visits and allowing us to browse in the Tower ( spectacular). April saw the Tayside Open day; It was the best attended open day to date with 38 people in attendance. Everyone had the chance to visit Dundee Air Traffic Control Tower and see it in operational mode; View the new Pooleys/Tayside Aviation Nav Plotter in use for flight planning both on the ground and in the air; Fly the Alsim Flight Simulator on a trip around Malaga ( I ve never before experienced Snow, Rain, Crosswinds, both engines failing / total electrical failure, flaps wont function... All at the same time when I was on the approach to Malaga. Luckily, or extraordinarily - I still managed to land saving the lives of the 100 people onboard! Everyone in attendance thoroughly enjoyed this event, which is proving to be a winner. Thanks to Jim Watt for co-organising, supplying the Nav briefs and the exceptionally tasty Buffet, and thanks to the people in the Control Tower for hosting & explaining the complex tasks they perform.

P a g e 35 Wings and Things W h a t s b e e n G o i n g o n i n o r A r o u n d T a y s i d e A v i a t i o n / C l u b h o u s e The CAA Safety Evening was hosted by Tayside Aviation on a glorious sunny evening in March. Flyers from all over the Central belt, Angus, Perth and Aberdeen were in attendance and were treated to some inspirational accident footage and video s of what not to do in certain situations. Jims Talk Nights: Throughout the Spring we have hosted a series of Talk nights. These were designed to give structured flight information & therefore a more informed Pilot that will have the confidence to deal with different situations to a favourable outcome. All Presentations were well attended and received favourable feedback. Hopefully see you all next Spring for more... BBQ Anyone - Its as simple as buying some Burgers and heading down to the club and get them sizzling... Sounds a good idea? Then get texting / ing or calling your flying buddies and make an enjoyable summers evening with friends and a bite to eat. Congratulations to Tom Hall who passed his PPL and is now something of a celebrity being the Youngest Pilot in Scotland at age 17 years young. His story has been in the Daily Record, the Internet, and he also took a female Breakfast Tv Newsreader up for a flight!!!! I also witnessed him taking Geoff his Dad up for a flight which he received a resounding Thumbs up. Fantastic news and we hope Tom can enjoy some celebrity status with us on the next fly-out. Could ALL Flying club members please send an ELECTRONIC PICTURE of themselves to Bernadette, for the purpose of our Future NEW TECH log system. Can you send the photo to Bernadette@taysideaviation.co.uk

P a g e 36 Wings and Things W h a t s b e e n G o i n g o n i n o r A r o u n d T a y s i d e A v i a t i o n / C l u b h o u s e Dundee has a Citation simulator that s just simply amazing for all pilots who want to practice their landing techniques from Cannes to Malaga, from Rotterdam to Marseilles airports. Or if you want to use it for fun and test your skills against one of your work colleagues then come on board! It definitely looks and feels like flying a jet so come along a book a slot for a full hour on the jet plus an ILS, Rnav brief. The Jersey Air Rally is not being organised for Summer This is the 2nd year in a row that they have decided not to run this event, which is a pity as its possibly one of the best Fly-Ins in Europe! Fingers crossed they resume their Air Rally next Summer... Fife Open Day is a Must attend event - it has so much going on that you need to attend and find out for yourself. Lets say that you wont be disappointed, its an aviation / fun packed day for the whole family. Lots more planned for the coming Summer lots of Fly-outs to England, Northern Ireland, and the Western Isles of Scotland. Really hope you can come along & enjoy the events!
