2 Context of Network Rail Network Rail a non for profit company Recently Network Rail has been reclassified One of the largest land and property owners in the UK. We lease and charge stakeholders who use our assets to fund maintenance, enhancements of the railway network. 20,000 miles of track 6,300 level crossings 2552 railway stations 7-Jun-17 / 2

9 Stakeholder Engagement Example Heart of Wales Line Aims: Determine what frequency is achievable with the current infrastructure What minimal infrastructure intervention is required to create a two-hourly timetable Method: Optimising the current timetable making use of the double track sections of the line, passing loops, and possible track improvements. Results: Option 1 - With the current infrastructure, and no line speed improvements, potentially a train every 2 hours 10 minutes Option 2 - By making minimal changes to the infrastructure to improve line speeds, such as through track improvements, a train every 2 hours could potentially be achieved 7-Jun-17 / 9
