1 CALDICOT & DISTRICT Newsletter & Diary March 2019 Meetings in Caldicot Choir Hall at 2.15pm Reg Charity No THURSDAY 21ST MARCH 2019 SUBJECT: SPEAKER: TEA ROTA: THE HAPPIEST DAYS JOHN SHEEN SPANISH THURSDAY 18TH APRIL 2019 SUBJECT: SPEAKER: TEA ROTA: THE LIFE & WORK OF FRED HANDO DAVID HANDO TABLE TENNIS CHAIRMAN S LETTER Hello Everyone I hope you have all been enjoying the lovely weather we have been having. It has been hard to believe that, as I write this, we are still only in February. Also it s great to see the lighter evenings. Following our Committee meeting on the 21st February it came to our notice that a lot of people were very wary about filling in their next of kin details on their Membership renewal forms. So, to help explain the reason for this we have attached an explanatory note within this newsletter in the hope that this will put your minds at rest. Many changes have and are taking place at present and, as with everything, there will be teething troubles. Please be assured that all this is to help our U3A run smoothly and efficiently and once this is achieved I am sure we will return to normal. As explained in our January newsletter, our AGM will be taking place in September 2019 and new committee members will be voted in. I need to inform you now that approximately six present committee members will be retiring at that meeting so it is essential that nominations are thought about in order to keep our U3A up and running. Sorry to keep harping on about this but it is important that new committee members are voted in. So, before I finish I would like to thank Angela Hodson-Hirst for all the hard work she has put into making sure our GDPR and Policies are up to date and correct. Angela has put in so much work. Thank you so much. Pam Caines Chairman

CONDOLENCES Our deepest condolences were sent to the families of Patricia Dawe and Donald Wood both having passed away in February. PATRICIA DAWE It is with real sadness that we write about our dear friend Pat who passed away so unexpectedly on the 6th February. She was the loving mum of 3 children and grandma to her 10 grandchildren and was so very proud of them all. Pat moved from Egham to Portskewett in 2007, to be closer to her family who live in Newport. Despite having just recovered from a cancer scare, she didn t dwell on it and soon became involved locally in some of the favourite things that she loved. Pat loved music - she joined the Chepstow Choral Society, enjoying her passion for singing and performing many choral and classical pieces. Even though she wasn t particularly keen on modern music, she would still rehearse and learn her part, took part in the many concerts, mainly at St Mary s Church in Chepstow.

3 In a similar vein, despite her lack of interest in pop/popular music, she never complained when others of us had the radio etc. playing, and would politely say Yes, it s ok, but not for me - rather than Please turn that rubbish off! She played the piano and clarinet. Needing a new challenge, she decided to learn to play the recorder, and initially she joined the Chepstow U3A Recorder Group, before joining the Monday Consort (a smaller group of more accomplished players) and was soon performing in many concerts in local schools etc. Her love of music was something that she passed down through her family, with some of her children and grandchildren enjoying various aspects of the music spectrum. Pat had a great love of the outdoors - stemming back to the earlier days, where she had many happy family holidays walking in the Lake District. In 2007 she joined Caldicot U3A, initially joining the walking group, and walked regularly with the Strollers and in more recently with the Amblers. She went on several of the Walking holidays and was very proud of her achievements especially when she completed walks that she had initially thought were beyond her ability. Her love of the outdoors also included visiting gardens, historical buildings etc., and she spent many hours attending the Gardening Group meetings and trips. Pat also joined the Computer Group and for several years, was the Convenor. Whilst she always maintained that she didn t have any Computing expertise or skills she was always happy trying to help others, especially those with little or no computing knowledge. Her other great passion Photography, saw her regularly entering and winning the monthly Photography competition. Whilst initially, being a purist, she wasn t keen on the concept of Digital photography, and eventually accepted (to a certain degree), that Digital photography had some good points. Many members of the group will know that she took great pleasure in putting her own interpretation/ slant on the Competition Topic, and that she produced some very interesting, if obscure, photographs. The above paints only a small picture of lady with lots of interests, who enjoyed life and was admired and loved by many. Over the years, since coming to live in Portskewett and joining the U3A, she made lots of new friends and really enjoyed being involved in the many activities she took part in. She will be missed by all. Pam Simpson and Bridget Evans DONALD WOOD Don Wood was born in Swansea and moved to the Caldicot area to work at Llanwern, entering the priesthood in later life. Don was one time convener of the History group. He was a very kind and gentle man and loved by all. His funeral service held on Wednesday 27th of February packed the church with people standing inside and out. He will be greatly missed by a lot of parishioners in the Caldicot Benefice as well as the Mounton benefice where he regularly filled in. Sue Shepherd THANK YOU Reg Kelly Thelma would like to express her sincere thanks to U3A members who attended Reg s funeral and for the card sent to her. Reg was a member of the Music Appreciation group and enjoyed the Monthly meetings and reading the Newsletter.

7 At February s gardening meeting we were once more given a treat watching the film of the latest gardens we visited during the past year. Thanks to the film makers Ron Lapthorn and Jim Fenton for producing such an entertaining afternoon once more. Ron has been doing this for eighteen years and said he has decided to call it a day as far as film making is concerned, but watch out, you never know when he s lurking behind with his camera ready to catch a good shot! Luckily for us Jim will continue, as long as he has enough photos from gardening members to do so. Therefore, while we are out enjoying the garden trips this year do not forget to take some photos to send to Jim. As I am writing this, the sun is shining so let s hope we have a good summer this year to once more enjoy our gardens. GARDENING TRIPS Please make all payments in full by the April gardening meeting. This will be our last meeting before the Trips. Pauline Marx FRENCH GROUP Avez vous fait quelque chose intéressant récemment? If you understood the above, fine. If you did not you need to get out more often! So why not do this by coming along to our new French conversational group please read our new convener s introduction. The group s success very much depends on your support... The idea is to get the group off the ground. I have years of experience now doing courses in French and belonging to a French group in Chepstow. I should add that there are 3 groups in French in Chepstow and proposals for a fourth one! I have improved from doing courses and being in groups but feel that a more personalised approach would be very helpful. Although I am the convener perhaps a better description would be as a facilitator. So it is more a cooperative effort rather than me running the group It is not to be fluent in French. The goal is to be able to go beyond basic French but see how far we can go. So keep an open mind about how far we can develop in the language. So this applies to me too as I see myself as learning through the group. So to repeat this is very much a cooperative effort as it would involve contributions of different natures in the group. What expertise and knowledge do members of the group have already? So as a convener/facilitator I see myself having a low key sort of role. Members of the group can suggest what we can do in terms of learning to be that little bit more fluent and even about possible trip to France. John Plowman The next session will be the second and is again funded by the central committee as a new group initiative. Come along on Tuesday 5th March to the Day Centre at 14.00hrs for a free taster. Á bientôt Tony Hodson-Hirst

SPRING BREAK MILL RYTHE, HAYLING ISLAND Mill Rythe Holiday Village, originally called Sunshine Holiday Camp, opened its doors to the public in the early 1940s having been used by the Marines during WWII, and for holidays with their families immediately after the war.

9 Sunshine Holiday Camp was owned by a local management team and was eventually bought out by Pontins in the 1960s. It was later bought by Warner in the 1980s and became known as Mill Rythe Holiday Village. After a few years Warner decided to merge with Haven to become part of the Rank Group, transferring the ownership of Mill Rythe Holiday Village. It was here that the BBC shot scenes for the extremely popular sit-com Hi Di Hi, also the movie Confessions from a Holiday Camp was filmed entirely at Mill Rythe. More up to date, in 2004 scenes from Eastenders were shot here. During the 1990s the ownership of the holiday camp changed a few times. In September 2010 a newly formed holiday park operator, Away Resorts, bought the park and has made several investments and improvements throughout its ownership. These have resulted in comfortable cabins, good basic food and ample entertainment. Very good value. The good weather certainly lifted any Winter Blues although more normal February weather on Thursday (the free day) did curtail some of our expeditionary plans. However our planned outings were in glorious, unseasonal, weather:- First on Tuesday to Southampton. Mainly for shops old & new (West Quay) but some more venturous visited the older part of the city or found a museum. Second on Wednesday to Portsmouth. Some of us elected for more shops but a majority decided to follow our leader onto the Mary Rose where an enterprising member managed to negotiate a Group Deal saving us about 5 each. This is a display of real items recovered from the wreck extremely well presented conveying a feeling of the tough life of Tudor times - a recommended visit for anyone whether interested in history or not. The break was made so enjoyable not only by the good weather but by the relaxed efficiency of our pilot (NOT to be called driver), Rhys, as well as the staff at Mill Rythe. Jim Fenton AND... Once again Pam has succeeded in booking a great February break. The food was excellent, mostly buffet service with plenty of choice to suit all tastes. The staff were friendly and helpful and during the week we had winners at bingo, bowls, archery and quizzes amongst our group. The evening entertainment was first class, a female vocalist on Monday, a really funny comedian on Tuesday and two shows by the entertainment staff, Music Hall on Wednesday and Magic of the Musicals on Thursday. Both were fabulous the costumes, energy and enthusiasm of these talented performers were breathtaking. All in all a very enjoyable holiday, thank you Pam and perhaps you can be persuaded to book Mill Rythe again next year. Anne Duke HISTORY GROUP For the February meeting, the History Group had a talk by Stuart Fyfe entitled The Stuarts and the Civil Wars in the Three Kingdoms. Regarding the origin of the Stuarts, Margaret Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, married Walter Stuart, and that union was the start of the Stuart line in Scotland, ending when James VI became James I of England. That same Stuart dynasty then provided seven monarchs in England.

10 The members of the dynasty were James I, Charles I, Charles II, James II, joint monarchs William and Mary, and lastly Anne. The English Civil War started in Charles I s reign, a consequence of his attempt to rule without parliament, which he dismissed when they would not support his efforts to raise taxes. There had already been discord between Charles and Scotland, and this continued after In England, Charles attempted unsuccessfully to arrest dissident Members of Parliament on the floor of the House of Commons, causing further unrest. In August 1642 Charles raised his standard at Nottingham and hostilities began. Over the following 3 years many battles were fought. At first the royalists prevailed, but gradually the tide turned in favour of the parliamentarians. Before the end of 1648 the royalists were beaten and 1649 saw the trial and execution of Charles I, followed by 10 years of rule by Parliament, with Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector. In 1660 Charles Stuart, son of Charles I, was declared king and returned to Britain. Those who had signed his father s death warrant were tried and executed. In 1661, the exhumed remains of Oliver Cromwell were posthumously executed, and his severed head was displayed on a pole. Hostilities restarted briefly in various places, such as 1690, when King William III fought the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland, but parliamentary rule prevailed. Dave Edwards SIGHTFIRST PROJECT LIONS Unwanted spectacles/sunglasses will continue to be collected at the Monthly Meeting. The collecting box will be on the bar at the back of the hall.
