Club talks start at 2.30pm, and provide an opportunity to meet other members, hear about various aspects of gardening from experts and seek advice about your current problems from an experienced local gardener. Refreshments are included and there is usually a raffle. Please come along and support them. 4 FOREWORD Well by any stretch of the imagination the past 12 months have been a roller coaster, and that is probably erring on the side of caution. The financial year ended in very good standing, and again in no small measure, owing to the efforts of Maggie Martin who produced 2870 from Sponsorship and Advertising, the monies raised help to offset the deficit in respect of our shows. Kindly let our supporters know how much we appreciate their support when you visit their premises. Peter Jackson stood down, not only as Trading Manager, but also as Vice Chairman. As was mentioned at the AGM all the members of the Trading Centre Sub Committee can only pay homage to the tremendous amount of work that was carried out by Peter, the Society will never be able to acknowledge the commitment that Peter has given over so many years. Tim Speller was elected to the position of Vice Chairman, whilst still remaining as Show Manager. It was with sadness that Eve Osborne stood down as Outings Officer. It is timely to thank Eve for the past 10 splendid years, she has done a wonderful job. Thanks also to Clive, her husband, who has helped plan the various outings. Rosy Raines has kindly agreed to take over the mantle. I have relinquished the role of Holiday Organiser, so far no one has volunteered for that role, so if you would fancy taking on the mantle, give me a call. The Show Committee have still been unable to find a replacement for John Lark in his role of Chief Steward, any one out there who fancies taking over, you would have John available to help and advise you as necessary. John and his wife, Janet, will be sorely missed. Over the years I have time and time again referred to them as Mr & Mrs Reliable. President Ron Duffield s Presidential award went to Martin Clark, Martin has been the mainstay of the Trading Centre since Peter Jackson stood down. The award has well and truly been earned. The talk by Charles Dowding Healthy Growth with No Dig gardening, was well received, and members of the audience asked many questions. Gill Elton has already arranged our next guest personality, it will be Pip Bensley, who will appear at the Station Theatre on Wednesday 23rd October, 2019 at 7.30 pm. As a Society we approach 2019 in good stead, so I wish you all a Healthy and Happy New Year. Each member pays a subscription of 12 per year, or 1 per month. There is a monthly draw and for every 1 of entry fees, 50p is allocated to prize money and 50p donated to support the shows. The more members we have the better the prize money. 9 RULES FOR EXHIBITORS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY TO AVOID DISQUALIFICATION. GENERAL 1. Conduct and judging of the show, unless otherwise specified in this Year Book, will be in accordance with: a. The Royal Horticultural Society Handbook (2016 revised) available at the Show. b. Amended where applicable by the rules of The Daffodil Society, National Dahlia Society, National Sweet Pea Society and the National Vegetable Society. 2. The Show Committee reserves the right to interpret the rules in the best interest of the Show, including the right to refuse an entry, the Show Manager being the referee. 3. Right to inspect gardens of competitors. The committee reserves the right to visit by permission, before or after a show, gardens from which plants, flowers, fruit or vegetables have been entered for competition. ENTRIES 4. Home-grown. All horticultural entries must be bona-fide produce of the exhibitor, grown by him/her for a period of at least six weeks before the date of the show. 5. Cleanliness. To prevent possible disqualification and removal from the hall, all exhibits must be clean and free from disease. Containers should be clean and free from damage. 6. Loss or Damage. Entries are accepted on condition that the Society is not responsible for loss or damage to any exhibit or to the exhibitor s personal property. 7. Entry forms must be submitted to the Show Recorder by 6pm on the Wednesday prior to the show. Earlier entries would be much appreciated. Late entries are at the discretion of the Chief Steward and Show Recorder. Late entries are charged double. Alterations are 50p. 8. The entry fees for classes, unless otherwise specified are: 2 for Open Championships 1 for Members Daffodil Championship, Hayling Island Salver and special classes 50p for Open classes 30p for Members Only classes Free for Junior classes Afternoon Show entry is free to all adult exhibitors with more than two entries. 9. Limitations. a. No person shall stage more than one entry per class. b. Two or more people may not exhibit for prizes in the same class using produce from the same house, garden or allotment, with the exception of cookery, junior, photography, handicraft classes and floral art. EXHIBITING 10. Entry cards must be collected from the Show Recorder s table on arrival at the hall. Each to be placed name downwards by the relevant exhibit. If not entering, place the card on the show bench, marked No Entry. 11. Naming. The variety of blooms and plants should be stated on cards available from the Show Recorder. Cards stating variety not known are available. Please note, in the event of a tie, the one that is named will be selected. 12. Help for exhibitors. Stewards are present during staging to advise, but it is the exhibitor s responsibility to ensure that the entry conforms in all respects with the schedule. 13. Staging. Exhibits should be staged as attractively as possible. Quality and uniformity are vital and are more important than size

10 14. Moving of exhibits. Apart from the exhibitor, only Stewards may move exhibits for the following reasons:- a. Before judging, as little as is necessary to make room on the show benches for other exhibits. b. After judging, as much as is necessary to present an attractive and well balanced show bench to the public. 15. After staging and before leaving the hall, exhibitors must check that their entries are in accordance with the schedule, and the correct entry card is name down by each exhibit. HORTICULTURAL CLASSES 16. Constitution of fruit and vegetable dishes. Every dish must consist of one cultivar only, unless mixed dishes are permitted by the Showing and Judging Standards. Numbers in a dish and maximum points in a collection are specified in the Showing and Judging Standards, pages 50 and Members Only classes are open to families holding the Society s current membership card. 18. Flowers. Society Vases must be used whenever possible. The stems of cut material must reach water. Vases may be packed with clean paper provided or with natural material. Newspaper must not be used because of discolouration to the vases. 19. Rings are available for measuring exhibits for which sizes are quoted. They must pass through without touching. 20. Vegetables. Roots must be carefully washed. Beet, carrots, parsnips and swedes should have the leaves cut so that approximately 75mm of leaf stalk remains. Radishes should have foliage trimmed back to 30mm. Onions should be trimmed back to the basal plate. 21. Fruit must be shown on the plates provided. The appearance of fruit is enhanced by its natural bloom. Apples must not be polished. All fruit except apricots, peaches and nectarines should be shown with stalks. Currants should be shown in strigs as grown. 22. Definitions. Vase has a height greater than the width of its mouth i.e. bikini vase. Bowl has a width equal to or greater than its height. Pot/Container The diameter of a pot/container is the inside measurement made as close to the top as possible. With square or rectangular pots/containers it is the inside measurement made straight across the top at right angles to the rim. Cultivar is the international name for variety, e.g. Peace is a variety whereas rose is a kind of flower. House plants given reasonable treatment will thrive in a dwelling room for several years. Pot plants are for use in a greenhouse or for short periods in a dwelling room. Display is primarily for attractiveness of the arrangement. Novice is an exhibitor who has not won a lst prize in any relevant class at any HIHS show. Shrub is a woody stemmed plant, naturally branched from or near the base, lacking a single trunk. Stem A stem is the main stalk and flower(s). Foliage the inclusion of foliage from plants other than those of the flower/seed heads/fruits being exhibited in the vase is not permitted. Orchids must be of a minimum of 2nd year growth. First year growth will be classified as not as schedule. Daffodils For Daffodil Classifications see our website or the Daffodil Society Handbook. 12 COOKERY 23. Covers. All dishes exhibited must be covered by a display cover or cling film. Display covers are provided by the Society and can be obtained from the Show Recorder on the morning of the show. Plates, bowls and dishes must be plain and white, to assist anonymity. White plates are available from the Society. 24. Jars. The contents of a jar should be clearly labelled and with the day, month and year of making. Jams etc should reach within 3mm of the top of the jar and be covered with a waxed disc and cellophane top OR a brand new plain white metal top. Chutneys should reach within 12mm of the top of the jar. Jars containing vinegar must have brand new plain white metal screw tops. Coffee jars must not be used. Pickles and chutneys should be at least 12 weeks old, unless otherwise stated. They must be ready to eat. 25. Mixes. Pastry, bread, pizza and cake mixes are to be home made from raw ingredients. 26. Warning. Items of food exhibited in the Cookery and Juniors classes are not to be sold, raffled or given away, as they have not been stored in accordance with the Health and Safety Recommendations. Fresh cream must not be used for decoration or filling. 27. No meat or fish to be used. JUNIOR EXHIBITORS 28. Age limits. Juniors have separate groups. 4 to 8 years and 9 to 14 years. 29. Prizes are awarded for each class. 30. Own work. The design and construction of exhibits must be entirely the junior s own work. 31. Marking. A label naming the exhibitor must be firmly fixed to the exhibit and out of view. PHOTOGRAPHY 32. Own work. The photograph must be the work of the exhibitor. The photograph may be professionally developed and printed. No photograph may be entered into a HIHS show on more than one occasion. Maximum print size 190mm x 127mm unless otherwise stated. Mounting optional. FLORAL ART 33. Judging will be to the 3 rd Edition (2015) of the NAFAS Competitions Manual. Mrs Gilly Webster (Tel: ) has kindly consented to advise would-be exhibitors on any difficulties experienced in the interpretation of classes in Floral Art. 34. An exhibit is composed of natural plant material with or without accessories. Staging will be in alcoves approximately 560mm deep x 610mm wide. Height unrestricted unless otherwise stated. HANDICRAFT 35. Own work. Items of handicraft must be the work of the exhibitor. To be displayed in an area of 600mm x 600mm unless otherwise stated. Items may be folded to fit space. No item of handicraft may be entered into our show on more than one occasion. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR BEEKEEPER CLASSES 36. Honey and wax must be the produce of the exhibitors own bees, except where stated. 37. Beeswax may be polished or unpolished at the entrant s discretion. 38. Frames must be enclosed in a case visible from both sides and removable by the judge. 39. Extracted honey must be exhibited in matching clear unlabelled 454g squat jars with standard gold screw top commercial tops or screw offs. 40. Honey Colour. British Standard Institute (Number 1656) grading filters (glasses) Grading Filters are available from the Show Manager on show day (Grading glasses should be viewed against a standard 454g honey jar with a matt white background, not against a direct light source). 41. Mead must be shown in clear glass wine bottles of approx 750ml capacity. No alcohol may be added. 42. Candles Exhibitors should provide one candlestick for each pair of candles entered

13 JUDGING 43. Privacy. No person other than the judges, stewards and others appointed by the Show Committee may be present during judging. 44. The Judges decisions are final with regard to the relative merit of the exhibits. 45. Protests must be made in writing to the Show Manager, with a fee of 1, not later than 3pm on the day of the show. The fee will be returned in the event of a dispute being upheld. PRIZES AND TROPHIES 46. Points for exhibits will be awarded as follows: 1st = 4, 2nd = 3, 3rd = 2 and 4th = 1 Collections count double when so indicated in the schedule. In the event of a tie on points, the exhibitor with the greater number of firsts will be deemed the winner of a trophy. 47. Withholding prizes. Prizes or medals may be awarded or withheld at the discretion of the judges and Show Manager if the quality of entries is not sufficiently high. Prizes and medals will not be withheld because there are insufficient entries. 48. Prize money will be as follows unless otherwise stated in the schedule: Open Championship classes will be awarded 1st = 50, 2nd = 30, 3rd = 20. Other classes 1st = 2, 2nd = 1.50, 3rd = 1. Double-pointed classes, except for Championship classes will receive double prize money. Prize money will be paid out at the Show Recorder s desk when announced, at about 3pm on the day of the show. Any unclaimed after one month will be returned to Society funds. 49. Trophies must be returned clean to the Trophy Co-ordinator three weeks before the next relevant show. Holders are responsible for their safe custody. REMOVAL OF EXHIBITS 50. After the prize-giving an announcement will be made that exhibits may be removed. Any exhibit remaining ten minutes after the announcement will be donated to local causes. EXHIBITING FOR THE FIRST TIME? PLEASE READ THE RULES FOR EXHIBITORS VERY CAREFULLY. If you need clarification of the rules or description of the classes, any member of the Show Committee will be pleased to help. A useful reference for exhibitors is the R.H.S Horticultural Show Handbook which can be obtained from the R.H.S at Wisley, or a copy is available for inspection from the Show Manager/Chief Steward. On show days, stewards will be in the hall to give every assistance. * * * * HELPING WITH THE SHOWS CATERING: If you can make a cake, or help on the morning or afternoon of our show days please contact Kay Hawkins, Tel: kay28hawkins@gmail.com HELPERS are always needed on the evening prior to the show for setting up and at the end of the show for clearing away. STEWARDS have particular responsibilities including supervising the exhibition tables, escorting the judges and recording results, manning the car park and entry table. No special knowledge is required, but certain formalities must be observed. Training will be given. Volunteers are always needed - Please ring Chief Steward. PLANT STALL - All contributions of spare plants, seedlings, cuttings, fruit etc, will be greatly appreciated at all shows, named where possible. Please bring them to the Community Centre, either on the evening before or on the Show morning before 10am. If you are unable to bring them yourself, they can be collected if you contact any member of the Show Committee in advance. The proceeds help towards putting on the shows. 46 HAYLING ISLAND SALVER Competition Rules 1. The Hayling Island Salver Class is open to all current members of the Hayling Island Horticultural Society. 2. The Hayling Island Salver class is for a collection of three types of vegetables taken from the following list of nine. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets: Onions (3), Potatoes (3), Any Other Root Vegetable (3), Beans (6 pods), Peas (6 pods), Tomatoes (6), Courgettes (3), Lettuce (2), Sweet peppers (2). Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points. This is split into three sections as follows: 7 points for size, shape and colour 7 points for condition, 6 points for uniformity. The overall mark will therefore be out of a total of All vegetables are to be displayed for effect. The vegetables must be displayed within an area measuring 450mm by 600mm, without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 450mm by 600mm, can be used to display the vegetables, or the area can simply be marked on the staging. Where a tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurements that must not exceed 450mm by 600mm. 4. A black cloth is permitted, and the tray may be painted. Parsley is allowed for garnishing, but no other foliage or accessories, such as plates, sand, rings etc, will be allowed. Onion tops may be tied or whipped using raffia or string. 5. The winner of the Hayling Island Salver class will receive a 10 Hayling Island Horticulture voucher. The runner-up will receive a 5 voucher. Third place will receive a 3 voucher. NOTES FOR EXHIBITORS AND JUDGES Root vegetables must have foliage trimmed back to 75mm. Lettuce must have roots Peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk attached. Tomatoes must be displayed with calyces (the green flower bud cases). Judges may handle exhibits, open pods etc to check for quality. The tray, board or staging must not be cut or mutilated in any way at all - such as cutting holes for standing onions in. Judges should use their discretion when judging the Hayling Island Salver class, remembering that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors. The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors cards. Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to, and decided by, the Show Committee. Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification

51 Horticultural Society Year Book Alan Mak MP Message of Support This year I am delighted to continue supporting the Hayling Island Horticultural Society. It is a group that keeps going from strength to strength and having visited some of the excellent shows that take place throughout the year I know how popular they are on the Island and beyond. I look forward to visiting again in 2019, and seeing the diverse range of plants, vegetables and other items that will be on display. This year will also see the return of my three popular community events - the Jobs, Apprenticeships and Careers Fair on Friday 15 March from 9am to 2pm at the Havant Leisure Centre, the Havant Small Business Awards and the Community Groups and Older Persons Information Fair. 54 HAYLING ISLAND HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY RULES 2019 NAME 1. The Name of the Society shall be the The Hayling Island Horticultural Society. AIM 2. The Aim of the Society shall be to improve the practice of Horticulture in Hayling Island by:- (i) Holding regular Horticultural Shows. (ii) Arranging Horticultural Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Competitions, Newsletters and Social Activities. (iii) Operating a Trading Centre. (iv) Guarding the interests of Allotment Holders. (v) Affiliating to such organisations as may be appropriate. MEMBERSHIP AND SUBSCRIPTIONS 3. Membership of the Society is open to all persons interested in Horticulture whose application for Membership has been approved by the Committee. Membership shall be on a Family/Household basis. The named Family/Household is entitled to the privileges of the Society. Each Membership Card permits two votes. The subscription shall be for one year, 1st March - 28th (29th) February. Members in arrears as at the 30th April shall be deemed lapsed. OFFICERS 4. The Officers shall be; the President who shall be elected for a maximum term of 3 years, Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Trading Manager, Trading Treasurer, Show Manager, Lecture Secretary and Membership Secretary. MANAGEMENT 5. The affairs of the Society shall be conducted by a Committee consisting of the above Officers (excluding the President). A quorum at Committee meetings shall be 5 persons. The Officers of the Society shall be elected for 3 years, one third retiring each year by rotation at the Annual General Meeting. Those retiring shall be eligible for re-election. Officers not retiring by rotation shall be eligible for election to an Office falling vacant. If successful the person elected to fill the resultant vacancy shall remain in that position until that Office next falls vacant by rotation. The Offices shall fall vacant in the following sequence:- (i) Chairman, Trading Manager and Membership Secretary (ii) Vice-Chairman, Treasurer and Lecture Secretary (iii) Secretary, Show Manager and Trading Treasurer The Committee is authorised to fill vacancies as they occur and to co-opt additional Members. Members so appointed or co-opted shall hold Office until the next Annual General Meeting. Election to the Committee shall be by ballot, nominations shall be submitted to the Secretary not later than 31st October. The consent of the Nominee must be obtained. GENERAL MEETINGS 6. The Annual General Meeting shall be convened not later than the last day of November. The Chairman s Report and interim statements of the General and Trading Accounts shall be submitted to this meeting, which shall also elect Committee Members. Other General Meetings shall be held at such times as the committee, or a request in writing by at least 30 members, shall determine. Not less than 28 days notice shall be given of all General Meetings. Forty members of the Society shall

55 form a quorum, and in the case of equal voting, the Chairman shall have the casting vote. At all General Meetings voting shall be by show of Membership Cards. Membership Cards are not transferable and proxy votes shall only be allowed if 48 hours prior notice is given to the Secretary. FINANCE 7. 1 The Society s Financial Year shall commence on the 1st October. Records of the Society s Accounts shall be maintained detailing the receipt, disbursement and investment of all funds. Two sets of records shall be kept, the General Account and the Trading Account. The General Account shall record all financial transactions other than those of the Trading Centre and shall be kept by the Society Treasurer. The Trading Centre Account shall record all financial transactions of the Trading Centre and shall be kept by the Trading Centre Treasurer. A Revenue Account and Consolidated Balance Sheet, which shall include details of Assets held by both the General Fund and the Trading Centre, shall be presented to the Annual General Meeting by the Society Treasurer. A separate Revenue Account and Balance Sheet in respect of the Trading Centre shall be presented to the Annual General Meeting by the Trading Centre Treasurer. 7.2 The Committee may only authorise a donation from the Society funds under the following circumstances: (i) it must be to a local cause for a specific purpose (ii) it must come from an estimated surplus over the funds budgeted surplus/deficit for the year (iii) it should be no more than 50. Larger donations may be made provided that a notice giving details has been displayed in the Trading Centre for five weeks and that no written objection has been received. (iv) the total of all Society gifts and donations must not exceed 250 in any year unless previously authorised by a General Meeting. AUDITORS 8. Audits of the two accounts shall be conducted annually to ensure compliance with the Society s financial policies and procedures by an auditor appointed by the Annual General Meeting. The Auditor shall report to the Society at the Annual General Meeting. TRADING CENTRE 9. The Trading Centre shall be operated as a self-accounting Unit, controlled by the Trading Sub- Committee, answerable to the Main Committee. STANDING ORDERS 10. Standing Orders for conducting the business of the Society shall be recorded separately from these Rules. They shall detail terms of reference for the Officers and the Sub-Committees. They shall be reviewed and amended, if necessary, by the first Committee Meeting following the Annual General Meeting. SPECIAL BUSINESS (including rule changes) 11. The Society may be converted, dissolved or these Rules may be amended by a two-thirds majority of Members present and voting, at the Annual General Meeting or a specially convened General Meeting. The suggested conversion, dissolution or alteration to the Rules must be submitted in writing to the Secretary who shall convene a Meeting within 8 weeks of receipt of the submission (See Rule 6). The object for which a specially convened General Meeting is called, shall be stated in the notice convening the Meeting. MATTERS NOT PROVIDED FOR 12. Any matter not provided for in these Rules shall be dealt with by the Committee

THE GROWING TOGETHER PROJECT For those who may not be aware this project is a standalone organisation created by Ray Jones and myself in October The connection to the Society relates to the initial set up when Hampshire County Council provided some funding but stipulated that all financial dealings be controlled by our Society. We have a number of long term projects underway. We have had tremendous support from Community First, and in particular their Positive Pathways and Lockheed Martin teams, for which we are truly grateful. We are in the process of setting up a dedicated team to look after the Stead & Ritchie Memorial Garden whilst at the same time utilising the expertise of Paul Haines, who has pruned all the apple trees in the Hayling College s Jubilee Orchard. Obviously we need volunteers rather than commentators to help us go forward with our projects, so I ask the question, can you spend an hour a week helping maintain the Memorial Garden, and take pride in the result? Please be positive, give me a call on (023) and commit just one hour a week, you will make a heck of an improvement. As we go to print I am hopeful that we are going to be able to help Mengham Infant School this year. This means that all five schools will have a Growing Together presence. I also need to acknowledge the sterling work of Tony Athill at Mengham Junior School, the commitment of Mike Darby at Mill Rythe Junior School, the girls at the College who won the School Trophy, and finally Matt Lane who has moved on from the College, we all wish him the very best for the future, he deserves it!
