2 C O L C H E S T E R REAL ALE PUB GUIDE This booklet has been produced by the Colchester & N.E. Essex branch of CAMRA as a guide to the pubs in Colchester that serve real ale, and to assist visitors to the town to visit them. We will also be working on a guide to the real ale pubs in the rest of the branch area. All of the pubs in the guide are easily accessible from the town centre, and the map will help guide you in the right direction. The information in the guide was correct at the time the pubs were surveyed, but this can change over time, and the guide will be updated to reflect this. Visitors who wish to visit certain pubs can always ring them to check that the details are still relevant. Colchester & N.E. Essex branch of CAMRA has regular monthly meetings held in a pub in the branch area. We also have a very good social aspect which includes brewery visits, trips out to various pubs, cycling trips, walking trips and trips to pubs in other towns and cities. There is also an active young members group. We also hold two beer festivals a year, one in January and one in June. Full details of the trips and beer festivals can be found on our website along with more information about the branch. 6 C O L C H E S T E R REAL ALE PUB GUIDE Colchester (Roman Camulodunum) is the oldest recorded town in Britain and dates back to before the Roman colonisation of the British Isles in the first century. By the year AD49 Camulodunum had become the first capital of the Roman province of Britannia. Within a few years the Roman town had been completely destroyed by Boudicea in the revolt of AD61, only to be rebuilt and strengthened with a defensive wall after her defeat by the more disciplined Roman army.
