You will be spoiled for choice with stunning scenery and landscapes, rich wildlife, adventurous outdoor activities as well as a range of walking and cycle trails. Enjoy lazy afternoons with a picnic in the summer sun or wrap up and enjoy an autumn or winter walk as well as family bike rides in the Lanarkshire countryside.

7 1 Castlebank Park Situated near the former site of Lanark Castle, Castlebank Park has a children s play area and horticultural centre. St Patrick s Road, Lanark, ML11 9EG Free except for Lanimer Day, when the park is used by Lanark s Lanimer Committee. 2 Chatelherault A Jewel in the Landscape, Chatelherault is a five star visitor attraction, visitor centre, beautifully restored building, country park and an integral part of the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve. The visitor centre contains exhibitions on the area s history, wildlife and the story of Chatelherault itself. There are over 10 miles of woodland walks through and around the beautiful gorge of the River Avon that provide access to important areas of native woodland, the ancient oaks, the ruins of Cadzow Castle and other historic landscape features. Why not pre-book one of the park s very informative and interesting guided heritage walks or hunting lodge tours. Children will love the award-winning and fully integrated adventure play facility. Free entry. 3 Calderglen Country Park Calderglen boasts beautiful river gorge nature trails, a conservatory brimming with plants from around the world and a children s zoo where you can see meerkats, marmosets, wallabies, birds and lots of other exciting creatures. The conservatory foyer houses reception and a great little shop packed full of gifts and goodies. For the energetic, there is an adventure playground. Visit the Courtyard Café and indulge in tasty refreshments, ice creams and cold and hot drinks. 8 country parks and gardens 4 Cunningar Loop Cunningar Loop is an exciting new woodland park which has been created on an area of previously derelict land. The park has adventure playgrounds, bike skills area, riverside boardwalk and Scotland s first bouldering park for new and experienced climbers. Downiebrae Road, Dalmarnock, G73 1PW. Phone Dalzell Estate Visit this spectacular estate, and you will find the oldest tree in North Lanarkshire, exotic 1920s Japanese gardens, peaceful woodlands packed with wildlife, waymarked walks and even the ghostly figure of the Green Lady. The adjoining Baron s Haugh Royal Society for the Protection of Birds local nature reserve, provides a fascinating experience for expert ornithologists and complete beginners alike. Free entry. 6 Drumpellier Country Park Drumpellier Country Park has a range of facilities and nature trails that make for a great family day out. Set in 500 acres of moorland, woodlands and grasslands and comprising of two natural lochs, there is lots to explore at the park. Open all year round, this visitor attraction offers; an outdoor adventure playground, visitor centre with cafe, seasonal funboat hire, picnic sites, a peace garden and wildlife garden. 9 7 James Hamilton James Hamilton Heritage Park is a 4 Star Visit Scotland accredited activity centre. The park features a 16 acre loch which provides beautiful and tranquil surroundings for our exciting range of water sports, from canoeing to windsurfing. The distance around the loch perimeter path is 1.2 kilometres (3/4 of a mile)the Heritage Park is a Recognised Teaching Centre (RTA) for the Scottish Canoe Association (SCA) and Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and only instructors qualified by the Recognised Governing Body (RGB) are utilised. Don t panic if water activities are not your idea of fun as there is plenty on offer for those who do not like to take the plunge. Our two adventure playgrounds are also star attractions and there is also a popular fleet of fun boats. We can also offer ornithologists some excellent bird watching opportunities from our bird sanctuary. 8 Lanark loch Through the summer months you can enjoy the bumper boats and other small rides on offer. We also have a putting green and a small pitch and putt course. There is a small kiosk, with picnic area and play park, which serves refreshments. If you are feeling energetic you can take a walk round the Loch or for something a little more relaxing why not try your hand at fishing. 10 country parks and gardens 9 Palacerigg Country Park Palacerigg Country Park is set within acres of stunning parkland; spread over 300 hectares of grassland, moorland, woodland and ponds that provide a haven for wildlife. The park is a free visitor attraction with facilities including a children s farm that homes a number of rare breed animals in additional to friendly farm animals, a fantastic outdoor adventure playground, children s mini ride on tractors, a sensory garden and a number of nature trails including the new family badger trail. Within the visitor centre visitors can find a cafe, toilets, small gift shop with pocket money priced toys and a discovery centre with displays, interactive panels, exhibition areas as well as fish tanks. There are two millennium longhouses that are used for children s birthday parties and as a base for demonstrations on a variety of woodland and other crafts. Taster sessions are available so that you can get a feel for various water sports, and both junior and adult courses are provided to help you progress. The park and centre are fully accessible for wheelchair users. 10 STRATHCLYDE Country PARK Strathclyde Country Park is an iconic North Lanarkshire which lies in 400 hectares of countryside in the valley of the River Clyde. Set within beautiful surroundings the park offers a huge network of woodland and lochside paths for walking and cycling. With free admission, the park is ideally situated with excellent road and public transport links. Strathclyde Country Park offers; three outdoor adventure playgrounds, bicycle hire, fitness gym, Watersports Centre with waterfront cafe and watersports activities including seasonal funboats and watersports courses. Strathclyde Country Park hosts many events and attractions throughout the year from major international rowing competitions to music festivals and firework events. 11 HERITAGE Dig into our history and discover the rich heritage and important role Lanarkshire played in Scotland s past from the Roman times, through to the industrial revolution and beyond.

12 heritage 11 Antonine wall The Antonine Wall became Scotland s fifth World Heritage Site in Built by the Roman Emperor Antonius Pius in 142AD, the fortification stretches 37 miles between the Clyde and Forth. The North Lanarkshire section of the wall passes through Croy to Castlecary and is among the best sections for walking. Parking is available at Auchinstarry Marina G65 9SG and Castlecary House Hotel, G68 0HD 12 Biggar and Upper Clydesdale Museum Biggar Museum Trust aims to collect, store, preserve and record Biggar and Upper Clydesdale s rich archaeological, social and historic heritage. The museum explores 14,000 years of rural and small town life in Upper Clydesdale. It focuses on the people who have lived and worked here from prehistoric times up to the mid-20th century. The objects on display illuminate a small part of their ordinary and extraordinary lives. Part of the original circular keep survives. The adjacent semi-natural ancient woodland is full of woodland flowers, especially during the spring. There is access to the Clyde Walkway. 13 14 Carmichael Visitor Centre Scotland s story told by living wax models from Queen Margaret and Macbeth to the present day. The Visitor Centre also features an outdoor adventure playground, excellent country estate walks and delicious home produced food in the Farmhouse Kitchen Tearoom and Farm Shop. Cafe open 10am to 5pm Mar-Nov. Closed Tuesdays. 15 Colzium House Colzium estate which surrounds Colzium House, is rich in history and open throughout the year. Historic features of the estate include the excavated remains of a 15th Century L-plan tower house and a nearby traditional Scottish ice-house c The estate also boasts a fine walled garden with numerous interesting shrubs and trees. During working hours staff are on hand to discuss the plants and respond to queries. Colzium House cafe and visitor centre is due to open Spring Open dusk till dawn 7 days. The walled garden is open Mon-Thurs, 12pm to 3.30pm and 12pm to 4pm at weekends. Closed Friday. 16 craignethan castle An exceptional fortress residence that was overthrown within 50 years of its construction despite its state-of-the-art artillery defences. Built about 1530, it was the brainchild of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, King James V s talented master of works. There is evidence of his many military innovations, including a shooting gallery or caponier. But within a generation it was cast doun by order of the Privy Council. From the M74, take Junction 8 or 9. Follow the signs to Blackwood, then the signs to Craignethan ML11 9PL Open summer only. 1 April 30 Sept 9.30am-5.30pm. 14 heritage 17 cumbernauld museum Cumbernauld Museum is situated within Cumbernauld Library, on the 3rd floor of the Town Centre Building. Displays tell the story of the area from Roman times through the agricultural and industrial eras of the 18th and 19th centuries, to the present day new town. Free entry. 18 Falls of Clyde A spectacular journey through natural and cultural heritage. The majestic Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve sits at the gateway to the Clyde Valley Woodlands National Nature Reserve and has four waymarked woodland trails of varying lengths. The reserve boasts an inspirational landscape of three dramatic waterfalls, beautiful ancient woodlands and abundant wildlife. Over 100 bird and mammal species are found here, including unsurpassed views of dippers and kingfishers along the water. Visit the exciting Falls of Clyde Visitor Centre, located within the New Lanark World Heritage Site to find out more about the wildlife and historical features of the reserve. Discover the Ranger s most recent sightings, learn about bats in the unique bat booth and watch recorded footage of wildlife on the reserve. Scottish Wildlife Trust s Ranger Team operate a year round events programme including Badger Watches, Hedgehog House and Nest Box Building Workshops and a variety of family events. A suite of self-guided trails are available including an historic waymarked trail, wildflower identification, winter tree identification and a family nature trail. Scottish Wildlife Trust, New Lanark, ML11 9DB Visitor centre open daily 10am- 4pm. 3 admission and free to Scottish Wildlife Trust Members. 19 KilsYTH heritage Situated on the upper level of Kilsyth Library, this small display of local heritage offers a chance to gain an insight into the history of the Burgh of Kilsyth. Of particular note to researchers is the map and photographic archive. There are also microfilm readers with data from local censuses, registers and other sources. Situated within Shotts Library, it is the perfect place to discover the area s fascinating past. Discover how the Covenanters met in secret in the 1600 s to escape religious persecution, and how the town s ironworks made Shotts famous in the 19th century. 22 Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway Enjoy a nostalgic railway trip 1498 feet above sea level! 16 heritage 23 low parks Museum and Hamilton mausoleum In the South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture s Museum service, we are passionate about caring for and raising awareness of the rich cultural heritage of South Lanarkshire. We develop and manage a fascinating collection of around 150,000 objects, using them in exciting and innovative ways to provide enjoyment and learning opportunities for all ages. Set within the oldest building in Lanarkshire and once part of the Duke of Hamilton s Estate, Low Parks Museum, our 5-star visitor attraction in Hamilton, the varied and dynamic displays, exhibitions and activities help to bring the history of South Lanarkshire to life, both for local people and visitors to the area. Mausoleum Tour by appointment only - contact the museum for further information. 24 North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre Formerly Motherwell Heritage Centre, the building is now the main centre for North Lanarkshire s extensive archives collection. This stunning contemporary building also offers visitors great panoramic view of the Clyde Valley from its fifth floor viewing platform. There is also an exhibition area with displays varying from local heritage to contemporary art and crafts. The archives and local studies facility welcomes enquiries from family history researchers, historians, students and others seeking information on the heritage of North Lanarkshire. A wide selection of maps, photographs and reference books are available, as well as scanned copies of local newspapers and census information. Children s workshops and other handson activities are run over local holiday weekends and school holidays. A small shop with heritage books, cards, toys and gifts is also open on site. 4* attraction. 17 25 National Museum of Rural Life Visit this five-star museum to find out what country life was like for people in the past and how this has shaped the working farms of today. Jump aboard the Farm Explorer tractortrailer to visit the historic farmhouse and bothy and the 1950s working farm with its herd of pedigree Ayrshire cows, pigs, horses, sheep and hens. New for 2017 are a pair of Highland cows. Take part in special events throughout the year, including our Easter event (15-17 April), Woolly Weekend (3-4 June), Heavy Horse Show (16 July), Country Fair (3 September) and Christmas Fair and Foal Show (3 December). There s also a Go Wild programme with activities for children throughout the spring, summer and autumn school holidays. Cost: admission charges apply; contact the venue for more information. 26 New lanark Surrounded by native woodland and the famous Falls of Clyde, this cotton mill village was founded in 1785 and became famous as the site of Robert Owen s radical reforms. New Lanark World Heritage Site is beautifully restored as both a living community and attraction. The fascinating history of the village is interpreted in the award-winning New Lanark Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre includes the Annie McLeod Experience, a dark ride which features mill girl Annie who reveals the amazing story of the life and times in New Lanark in the 1820 s. There is a spectacular Roof Garden, which provides superb views of the historic village and surrounding natural scenery, plus a host of other exhibition areas suitable for all the family. Delicious meals and home baking are available all day in the Mill Café. Plus there s the huge Mill Shop and retro Village Store. The World Heritage Site is also home to the Scottish Wildlife Trust s Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve (see entry no. 18). Events are held throughout the year. Accommodation is available in the New Lanark Mill Hotel, a stunning conversion from an original 18th century mill, selfcatering cottages called the Waterhouses and the Wee Row Hostel. 18 heritage 27 summerlee Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life sits astride the site of the 19th century Summerlee Ironworks, a forerunner in the use of the innovative hot blast ironsmelting process that led Coatbridge to become known as Scotland s Iron Burgh. Thanks to a 10 million Heritage Lottery Fund supported investment, Summerlee now has a huge indoor exhibition hall with working machinery, hands-on activities and mezzanine gallery. There is also a shop, café and wheelchair-accessible toilets within the hall. Outdoors, Summerlee s 22 acres border a restored branch of the Monklands Canal and an operational electric tramway offers rides on historic trams. Tickets can be purchased in the shop for all-day trips to the recreated 19th century mine and miners cottages. At the cottages, guides take small groups down the mine via a sloping entrance, which recreates the working conditions of miners in many 19th century Lanarkshire pits. The cottages show the domestic side of their lives, from the 1840 s to the 1960 s. Further along the canal there is also an all-ages playpark and picnic area. 19 LEISURE Kids will never tire of the thrills n spills Lanarkshire has on offer. From riding a rollercoaster, go-karting and mountain biking to swimming in pools with flumes and rapids, there is something for every child. Those hoping for a more relaxed, sophisticated experience can enjoy a day out at the races, a trip to the theatre, or a day out shopping with lunch along the way.

20 leisure 28 adventure planet The massive multi-levelled space themed areas are supervised by our Space Rangers and are equipped with Astro Belts, Time Tunnels, Meteor Pools, Space Bridges, The Comet Catcher, Shooting Stars and much much more. Old Quarry Road, Cumbernauld, G68 9NB Sunday-Thursday 10-6pm, Friday and Saturday 10-7pm, please note that opening times do not affect party bookings. 29 air space Scotland s largest trampoline park. Air Space is a huge spring-loaded urban playground made up on over 100 interconnected trampolines. Solo or social how you jump is up to you. You can improvise your own moves in the main arena, freestyle jumping from one trampoline to the next. Join in with team sports as you ve never experienced them before; Dodgeball, Volleyball and Basketball all on super-sprung courts. Or dive into the giant Air Bag. Air Space offer General Access Sessions, Fitness Classes, Birthday Parties, Club Nights and Autism Sessions.
