1 Communications Update 9 September 2016 News Round Up Back to school this week. But the silly season was nice while it lasted The Evening Standard, Time Out (1/9/16) and BBC website (2/9/16) previewed the open day and silent disco that took place last weekend on the Regent s Canal in Camden. Regional construction manager Charlotte Wood promoted the event on BBC London Radio (2/9/16) and construction supervisor Graham Smith was interviewed from the bottom of the lock by ITV London s evening news (3/9/16). A great picture of the silent disco appeared on the Guardian website s best photographs of the day (4/9/16). The One Show continued its trilogy of shorts looking at the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. On Thursday (1/9/16) they visited Burnley and Foulridge Tunnel and spoke to comedian Dave Spikey who described the canals as an antidote to hectic life. On Friday (2/9/16) they spoke to lock keepers Nick Stead and John Lobley at Bingley and concluded their trip into Goole. Simple Things magazine (1/9/16) has a lovely feature on the delights of the waterways and says: as a breathing space they are hard to beat. BBC Oxford (1/9/16) reports an innovative graffiti project on the Oxford Canal The Times Brick & Mortar section (2/9/16) highlights a number of canalside properties on the market including a little country bolthole on the Kennet & Avon Canal that s up for a mere million! The Daily Telegraph (3/9/16) reports a growing tension between the generations as increasing numbers of young boaters come to live on canals as a cheap alternative to bricks and mortar. The Times Weekend section (3/9/16) includes a canal boat trip amongst its breaks [that] will make your child s studies come to life
2 National press officer Fran Read is quoted in the Metro (6/9/16) about the things to consider before opting to live afloat National fisheries & angling manager John Ellis was quoted in the Daily Mirror (7/9/16) and spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live (6/9/16) about an eel found in the canal in West Bromwich, ITV Central also covered the story (7/9/16) Angling Times (September) has a double page interview with John Ellis and says the campaign to get more anglers back on our canals has been a major success The Daily Mirror features a beautiful picture of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in a picture story about hot weather (8/9/16) In social media: We asked our audience to look out for our lock cottage in BBC One s new programme Young Hyacinth, the tweet reached 6,000 people. We shared our wasp story on Facebook as part of a new phase of #GreatNatureWatch. This is our top Facebook post this week with a reach of over 13,500 reach and 165 likes, comments and shares. We did our second Facebook Live video from Camden Open Day on Saturday, this reached over 9,200 people and the video has been viewed 2,557 times And coming up next week: The Living Waterways Awards take place on Wednesday evening in Birmingham We ll be following up the successful open day at Camden with a story about an archaeological survey at the bottom of the lock We ll be providing an update to the waterways press about the demand for pre-bookable moorings in London The repairs to the breech site on the Rochdale Canal are expected to be completed next week so we ll be inviting the media to come and see We ll be announcing the go-ahead for the Worcester Arts Ring part of the Trust s Arts on the Waterways Programme
3 We ll be telling media about the discovery of a WW2 pillbox on the canal in Cowley Sky s hit TV series Stan Lee's Lucky Man will be filming on the canals in East London What s on this weekend? Two Arms on Two Legs Buckinghamshire Canals running festival. Sunday, 11 September, organised by the Canal & River Trust and Aylesbury running club On the Run and with support from Sport England and the players of the People s Postcode Lottery. Running along the Aylesbury and Wendover Arms of the Grand Union Canal, as part of a half marathon or 10k challenge. A family fun run is also organised for younger runners at Oakfield Park in Aylesbury. Open to anyone. For more information and to sign up Entry fees: half marathon 15 per person and 10k 13. Age restrictions apply. Manchester s Waterside Festival on The Rochdale Canal Manchester Saturday and Sunday 11am - 4pm. Part of a project to establish a sustainable adoption for the canal in the centre of Manchester. Organised by the Trust and Friends of the Rochdale 9, the event will be supported by staff and volunteers from the M&P Waterway. Activities for all ages and will take place from Lock 87 at the end of Canal Street, through to Lock 92, including: building underwater robots, and exploring what lurks beneath without getting wet with headsets that stream live images from what lurks beneath the water; Art exhibition and art project launch to transform an old workboat into a floating information centre; workshops including a digital floating workshops; free boat trips; music and dance. And Rough Fish a giant canal competition focused on fishing out rubbish and creating stories and tweeting about it the finds. The winner will have the honour of having a canal lock named after them for the day. Naburn Locks open day Sunday 10am 4pm, Naburn, York YO19 4RU. Opportunity to explore the site which was once a thriving inland port and a vital trade route into
4 York allowed the transport of coal and flour as well as cocoa and sugar to the likes of the factories at Rowntree s and Terry s of York. Naburn Locks have been undergoing a renovation by the Trust and local volunteers with the aim of opening up the site to local people and creating a visitor centre. Angling Trust Division 2 National Championships Saturday. Minworth Club & Lodge, Sutton Coldfield, B76 9BB. Around 300 anglers will be competing and, for the first time, the Trust is entering its own team captained by Carl Nicholls. The top ten teams are promoted to division 1. Angling Trust has chosen the Shropshire Union as the venue for the 2017 Division 1 championships and exploring the possibility of the Aire & Calder for Division 2. Village at War, Canal Museum, Stoke Bruerne NN12 7SE Saturday and Sunday. Take a trip back in time to the 1940s with the local community and enjoy WW2 music, entertainment, vehicles and fashion plus a memorial flight by a Hurricane and Spitfire. Trust will have a marquee to promote our work and opportunities for people to engage with us and we ll be handing out balloons and kids packs. For more info click here Slough Canal Festival Bloom Park, Middlegreen Road, Langley, Slough on Saturday and Sunday 11am 5pm. Jena will be there with volunteers and staff from London Waterway to talk to visitors about the Trust. Entertainments include boat trips up the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal, free fishing coaching from the Environment Agency, animals, and arts and crafts. Info here Taste Cheshire Food Fiesta at the Anderton Boat Lift. Saturday and Sunday, chance to sample the local delights as part of Northwich Heritage Weekend. Tastings and cookery demos by local chefs. West Midlands Waterway team will be at the Black Country Boating Festival on Saturday (event Sat & Sun). Dudley No. 2 Canal, Windmill End, Netherton DY2. This is a huge boating and community event that is extremely well attended. And at Dickens Heath Community Fair on the North Stratford Canal. Whether you work on the canal or have just visited, please take part and enter your word here Fancy a bit of Bat spotting this weekend? Summer is one of the best times of year to spot bats and if you d like to spot some of these captivating creatures then make your way down to your nearest canal or river. Some of our 200-year-old tunnels, bridges, and aqueducts are home to countless bats and if you plan your visit properly you re almost guaranteed to see something flitting across the water. Bats are easier to spot during the summer months as they re out and about hunting for insects. They re fascinating to watch as they dart about catching their prey and showing off their agility. If you want to enjoy a night out with a difference then take a look at our guide to spotting bats and head out to the water.
