1 September 22, 2014 Thrive Summit Linda Wieser, IBCLC, LLL Leader Make Breastfeeding Your Business A community initiative to support breastfeeding families The Make Breastfeeding Your Business (MBYB) Action Kit was created in 2009 by Sarah Frittenburg, 4th year Dalhousie Nursing Student in collaboration with the Lunenburg and Queens Baby-Friendly Initiative Committee. It was revised in The kit is designed to help local businesses, organizations and governments build their knowledge about breastfeeding and to provide them with tools to better support breastfeeding women, whether they are employees or clients. In 2012 a User Guide was created to assist community groups in recruiting partners. Resources: MBYB Toolkit (English) - MBYB Toolkit (French) - MBYB User s Guide for Community Breastfeeding Committees and Groups - Strategies for Recruiting Partners Chose major community players as a role-models, e.g. an employer business (South Shore Health) and a client business (HB Studios Sports Centre) Think about where breastfeeding mothers are as either clients or employees Aim for one-on-one contact - via phone or in person works best Build on current relationships, e.g. businesses you use as a client Recruit volunteers from local communities to talk with business owners Use contacts for networking Prepare short presentations (15 min) for larger organizations/businesses/governments Give either one page flier or entire toolkit Have table at community fairs Continue to follow-up unless someone says NO Emphasize that you have everything they ll need - sample policies, signage, handouts Share checklist which summarizes what partner needs to do Provide signage and funding for change tables, rocking chairs, etc., if able Examples: Small businesses Nova Scotia Community College Michelin Town of Mahone Bay
