In my last "Seattle Transmission" I mentioned that I'd be going on a music tour with Ottmar Liebert this spring and summer. Well, the adventure has begun! Two weeks ago, we had (very brief) rehearsals in Santa Fe. Ottmar Liebert is a flamenco-style guitarist who moved from Germany to Santa Fe, where he came up with his own westernized "nouveau" flamenco style about a decade ago. It caught a lot of people's attention, and for a while Ottmar, Enya, and George Winston were playing musical chairs at the top of the New Age charts. We were pretty apprehensive about the first show night -- June 12, in Riverside, CA. The four of us in the band had only practiced the entire set maybe 5 times, and two of those practice sessions were in the morning and afternoon of the first performance day. We were definitely stressing against our learning curve, and I was pretty 1

worried about remembering my cues and keeping place in each song. 2 But the crowd was great, providence smiled on us, and everything went as well as we could have hoped.

There were flubs all around (including some big ones on my end -- like when I loaded the wrong song into the computer) but we moved through errors smoothly and (possibly) without detection. Afterwards, the audience was happy (more! more!), I was happy, Ottmar was happy. So we started the next day with high hopes and a relaxed outlook. The June 13 show at Newport Beach was outdoors, which should have meant for better acoustics (no "slapback" echoes) and easier playing. In retrospect though, I think I could have spotted some of the clues that foretold disaster. For one, the audience wasn't into it. They were there to drink wine and chat with their friends. The VIPs in the front four or five rows didn't bother showing up until about 30 minutes through the first set. Most of the audience talked all the way through, as if they were at a supper club event instead of an instrumental concert. I, for one, made some monumental screw-ups. I dropped in big noisy loops at the wrong times, queued up wrong songs, and in one spectacular example of failure -- near the end of the concert -- I was the only person in the band to realize that a last-minute change in the set list had been made. I played the percussion parts for one song, when the rest of the band was playing something else. 2

3 I doubt the audience noticed much of this. To be fair, I don't think they would have noticed if I would have put on a gorilla mask in the middle of the song, or if Ottmar had stuck out his tongue out at the audience to show them same irreverence they were showing us. That was yesterday. Today, I woke up on the bus and stepped outside to find myself in a gorgeous field beside a blue lake under a sunny sky. (I am told that not knowing where you are, or being surprised at where you are when you wake up, is apparently not an uncommon thing when you're touring.) I walked to the water's edge and stretched and meditated while the fish jumped and the ducks swam. Mmmm. Perspective. There's nothing like a pretty relaxing morning to diminish the memory of a bad night. I remembered that I didn't come on tour to make money, or to launch a career as a performer. Primarily, I came to make new experiences. What's a life if you haven't got stories to tell? My life up until now has largely focused on being alone in a room with a computer, either working, playing, or making music. Burning Man and other events have always given me short breaks from the live/work at home computer life, but this tour is the first time I've spent more than a few weeks doing something totally different. Something that involves split-second interactions with Real Live Humans on a daily basis. It's good to know that life goes on, the morning still seems beautiful, even after you have utterly failed at something you are trying your very best to do well. 3 3

4 It's 4:00 PM right now. Showtime for performance #3 (Lake Casitas) begins in about three hours. I can't be sure whether or not it will go well or not.
