TRIP TIME: 1.5 hours TIP: Although the trail clings to the side of a cliff, it is very safe. Take snacks and water for the top. The top is a fenced area large enough for several people to enjoy the view. BENSON STATE The campground has picnic tables. A side trail allows the adventurers in RECREATION AREA your group to climb to an eye-level WHERE: Milepost 30 on I-84, 1 mile view of the Pool of Winds. west of Multnomah Falls AGES: All ages HOURS:Year-round. $5 Day use fee. TIP: Bring a frisbee for the disk golf course, bathing suit, and picnic lunch. EAGLE CREEK CAMPGROUND WHERE: Exit 41 on I-84, 1 mile east of Bonneville Dam. AGES: All ages. Young children can play in the creek with parents watching; older kids can walk the Eagle Creek trail. Be safety conscious on the trail some areas can be dangerous. HOURS:Year-round. $5 Day use fee. TIP: While hiking, carry water and wear good walking shoes. BEACON ROCK WATERFALLS SCENIC AREA 2 WHERE: Historic Columbia River Highway 30. Take the Ainsworth Exit off I-84, east of Multnomah Falls. AGES: Ability to hike TRIP TIME: 2-3 hours TIP: The Columbia River Gorge Scenic Area is famous for its waterfalls - 77 on the Oregon side alone! Be prepared to do a lot of stopping and starting again - these spectacular waterfalls are all within about 15 miles of each other on the Historic Columbia River Highway! WALK BEHIND A WATERFALL 3 BONNEVILLE DAM WHERE: Just west of Cascade Locks, OR. TRIP TIME: 1 hour or more TIP: Take your camera WEBSITE: nwp.usace.army.mil/op/b/tours.asp There is lots to see at Bonneville Dam. Watch fish swim past the glass viewing windows and take a walk next to the massive fish ladders. You can choose to tour the facilities on your own or join an interpretive program. Don t miss the fish hatchery at this site. There are display ponds at this relaxing area where you can feed large rainbow trout and watch adult white sturgeon that are over six feet long. ACTIVITIES: Try the 1/2 mile Alpine slide, kiddy karts, summer tube hill, rock wall climbing, bungee trampoline, miniature golf, disc golf, horseback riding, lift-assisted mountain biking, scenic sky chair or the Kid s Fun Zone for tots. AGES: Something for all ages TRIP TIME: All day if you want PHONE: ALPINE SLIDE! 5 TIMBERLINE SKI AREA WHERE: Take Highway 35 south from Hood River, then Highway 26 W toward Portland. Turn right on Timberline Highway. AGES: If they can ski or snowboard they re old enough TRIP TIME: Chair lift hours vary WEBSITE: TIP: The weather can turn on a dime on the mountain. Always be prepared for snow conditions. Summer skiing, snowboarding, biking, camping, hiking, snowshoeing. You don t have to be a skiier to take the Magic Mile lift up to the 7000 ft. level for the best view of the Mt. Hood summit. Dine at the historic Timberline Lodge. 6 Lost Lake Resort WHERE: Take interstate 84 to Hood River, then drive southwest to Dee and follow the signs to Lost Lake, 3,100 feet up the slopes of Mt. Hood. AGES: All ages. TIP: A fee parking permit is required and for sale at Lost Lake. WEBSITE: A GREAT FISHING SPOT! ACTIVITIES: Fish, hike, or rent rowboats or paddleboats. Picnic area, 127 campsites, lodge accommodations. Well stocked General Store sells groceries, fishing tackle, licenses, bait. Trails include an easy 3.2 mile stroll around the perimeter of the lake, 2 miles of handicap accessible trail, or more difficult hikes that connect to the Pacific Crest Trail.

This gentle path is perfect for bicycles or a leisurely afternoon walk. Start the journey in Cascade Locks underneath Bridge of the Gods. From here the path goes beneath I-84 and climbs to an old highway bridge that crosses Ruckle s Creek. It then zooms down to Eagle Creek and a perfect spot for a picnic before returning to Cascade Locks. 9 BOAT RIDE! WHERE: Stevenson, Washington 9990 SW Rock Creek Dr. TRIP TIME: 1 hour or more. Children enjoy playing the day away while parents relax and socialize with other parents. 13 WHERE: Historic Columbia Gorge Highway 30, Mosier, Oregon AGES: Baby strollers on up. TRIP TIME:.5 miles to the tunnels from Mosier. TIP: This section of the Old Scenic Highway is closed to motorized traffic. 14 Children 3 and up can also come for Play Care while parents go and enjoy time to themselves. Visit to see all there is to offer at Our Children's Place. Hood River Waterfront Park Mosier TWIN TUNNELS What a great place for the whole family to bicycle. There is no motorized traffic so this road is safe for kids still using training wheels. Even without wheels, the walk to the Twin Tunnels is just a short walk. The Twin Tunnels are also accessible from Hood River. Bike from Hood River to Mosier! WHERE: Exit 63 off I-84, North toward the river. TRIP TIME: Stay the Day Lots of fun toys to play on, picnic area and access to the river and beach. A great place to make believe! The climbing wall!

The original Surgeon s Quarters, built in 1856, is packed with cool pioneer things and photos. On the grounds are antique wagons. Across the street is the Anderson homestead - a Swedish style log home, plus a granary and barn. Summer workshops for kids and family concerts on the 4th Sundays. Family Fun Day during Fort Dalles Days is July 17, with music, wagon rides, a Pioneer Home Show & Craft Fair, living history demonstrations and more. 16 DISCOVERY CENTER and WASCO COUNTY MUSEUM See the Birds of Prey Exhibit. KIDS EXPLORER ROOM Hang out in the Kid s Explorer Room. Dig for artifacts in the sand, make a craft jacket, load a keelboat with supplies without tipping it over and try on Lewis and Clark era clothing. Scenic Dr. at the summit of the hill HOURS: Open daylight hours TIP: Bring a picnic lunch Enjoy Tree Top play park. Nearby is a Frisbee disc golf course and tennis courts for the older kids, so be sure to bring a throwing disc or racquet. A hiking trail surrounds the park, and across the street is the Veterans Memorial on Scenic Drive. Tree Top Play Park 18 WHERE: United Church of Christ Congregational Church, 111 E. 5th St. The Dalles AGES: 0-4 years HOURS: Open Wed- Sat 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. WEBSITE: Creative playspace for chlldren. Including arts and crafts, play kitchen, tumbling mats and a Bernouli Blower. Try out the Putt-Putt mini-golf couse! The course is set up in Wonderworks future home at 206 Madison Street, downtown The Dalles. The Putt-Putt course will be open weekends to help raise funds for wonderworks new home. 19 WONDERWORKS MUSEUM Riverfront Trail & Taylor Lake WHERE: Trail access at the Wasco County Discovery Center, 5000 Discovery Dr. The Dalles, off of Hwy 30. AGES: This is a paved trail and is appropriate hikers and bicyclists of all ages. TRIP TIME: Thirty minutes to two hours or more TIP: Be sure to take enough drinking water on a hot summer day. Go bike riding, hiking, look for osprey and bald eagles, or fish for large mouth bass from the shore of Taylor Lake, a great kid s fishing spot. WHERE: The Dalles. Taylor Lake is a 3 km walk from the Discovery Center or auto access from Taylor Lake road. TRIP TIME: A lazy afternoon TIP: To fish, you will need a fishing license.
13 THE DALLES CHRONICLE 2010 KIDS GUIDE: 25 THINGS TO DO Page COLUMBIA HILLS STATE PARK & PETROGLYPH DISPLAY WHERE: From The Dalles cross the Columbia River Bridge and head East on SR 14, lake entrance at milepost 85 TRIP TIME: ALL DAY TIP: Picnic and Camping available. Reservations are needed to view She Who Watches Horse Thief Lake at Columbia Hills State Park was once a sacred Native American village and burial site. This special place still holds many pictographs and petroglyphs to view, including the Northwest s most famous petroglyph, She Who Watches or Tsagagalal. This petroglyph is protected and can only be seen on a guided tour. The lake (created by The Dalles Dam Reservoir), is a great place to swim, fish and play. Make time to see the petroglyphs MARYHILL MUSEUM & STONEHENGE MEMORIAL 21 WHERE: On Washington Hwy SR-14, just west of US 97 and across the Biggs-Sam Hill Bridge from I-84. HOURS: Daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, including holidays, March 15 to Nov. 15 TIP: Stonehenge Memorial, the sculpture garden, picnic grounds and parking are free. (1/2 hour drive from The Dalles) HOURS: Open Fri and Sat., Noon-4p.m.or by appointment FT. ELECTRIC TRAIN! Shaniko Ghost Town WHERE: Shaniko, Oregon TRIP TIME: Most of a summer day Once the wool capitol of Oregon, Shaniko is now considered a ghost town. See the historic buildings and relics of days gone by. The Wasco railroad depot is 110 years old and inside the railroad museum are many photos and history of the old days. The unique N Gauge train, has a wealth of miniaturized detail complete with towns, farms, mountains and canyons. The model train is 14 FT. x 28 FT. Kids of all ages will enjoy seeing the train run. The park has a train caboose, picnic areas and restrooms. A great day trip. 24 OREGON HAS THE MOST GHOST TOWNS OF ANY STATE IN THE USA 25 WHITE WATER RAFTING WHERE: Deschutes River, Klickitat River, White Salmon River AGES: 10+ TRIP TIME: Most of a summer day TIP: Use one of the professional rafting guides for a fun and safe trip. You ll find the river guides in Maupin, Oregon and White Salmon, Washington. Be prepared for a wet and wild ride down the scenic rivers of the Columbia Gorge. The best time for white water rafting is on hot summer days where a good drenching feels great. Best bet is to make reservations with one of the professional rafting companies and let your guide do all of the work. LOTS OF WHITE WATER THRILLS!!!
