1 Aloha to Parents and Participants August 10-15, 2018 ISLE Project
2 Expedition Overview WHEN: August 10-15, 2018 WHERE: Big Island, Hawai I Volcanoes National Park Kilauea Camp - A family based camp facility perched on the edge of the Kilauea Caldera located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Students and chaperones will stay in three bedroom condo-style accommodations. WHO: Parent chaperones, daily field trip educators, and ISLE Staff.
3 Travel Details: Flights: NOTE: Must be on the following flights on Hawaiian Airlines & the following seating areas: August 10, 2018 PDX to HNL: Flight 25, seating in rows HNL to ITO: Flight 162, seating in rows August 15, 2018 ITO to HNL: Flight 151, seating in rows HNL to ITO Flight 26, seating in rows Send your reservation code to If your child is not 12 yet, send an so we can connect you with a chaperone to coordinate ticket purchase.

5 Friday Schedule Day 1 Getting there...! Participants gather at Portland International Airport. Parent chaperones will check in with small groups at the Hawaiian Airlines desk then board the aircraft as a group.! After connecting to an interisland flight to Hilo in Honolulu, ISLE staff will greet the group to begin the Big Island adventure.
6 Friday Schedule Day 1 Students will be taken to a Japanese garden to learn more about Hilo. Then we visit the world acclaimed Imiloa Astronomy Center for welcome time followed by dinner. After dinner, we head up the mountain to our home base, located in the Hawai i Volcanoes National Park boundary.
7 Friday Schedule Day 1 The group will move in to three or four bedroom condos. There is a large shared living room in each condo and two bathrooms. The girls and boys dorm chaperones will be staying in the main area of each condo or a bedroom if available. After a fire drill, move-in time, and electronic device check-in, each cabin will settle down. It s time to go to sleep and rest up for the big day ahead. Meet in the meeting room at 07:00 hours after eating breakfast.

PACK: *flashlight (batteries out) *rain jacket *camera *dry set of clothes *water bottle *hat, sunglasses, & sunscreen *towel *binoculars *some extra $$$ *clean light colored t-shirt to print on WEARING: hiking shoes shorts short or long sleeve shirt bathing suit (or packed) a big smile
9 Saturday Schedule Day 2! 7Saturday Schedule Day 2! 6:30 7:15 Breakfast at the KMC cafeteria.! 7:15-8:00 Orientation lecture Itinerary and more!! 8:00 8:45 Head to cabins to pack for the day.! 8:45 10:00 Drive to Hilo.! 10:00 11:30 Visit the Mokupapapa Marine Science Center! 11:30 12:15 Lunch Imiloa Astronomy Center! 12:15 1:00 Shop al local markets in Hilo.! 1:00 3:30 Geothermal Tidal Pool Swim & Eat Snacks! 3:30 5:30 Travel back to the KMC to change & eat dinner.! 5:30-7:00 Travel to the Mauna Loa viewpoint.! 7:00 9:30 Eat and view stars at elevation Perseid meteor shower, and MANY stars before the moon rises. Head back to camp.
10 Sunday Schedule Day 3 Ø 7:30 8:00 Breakfast in the central dorm room. Ø 8:15 8:45 Hawaiian fish identification talk. What to pack-n-wear. Ø 8:45 9:15 Pack and be ready to board the vans. Ø 9:15 11:30 Travel to and visit Punaluu Black Sands Beach--see LOTS of turtles, look to protect nesting sites, and see an ancient temple. Ø 11:30 1:30 Go to the southern most part of the USA and eat food prepared by the southern most USA restaurant. Ø 2:30-6:00 Snorkeling at Two Step if conditions allow! We will complete a Project REEF tropical fish count activity, swim in the ocean, and see a restored ancient Hawaiian Place of Refuge. Ø 6:00-7:15 Eat our packed meal at the ocean s edge and watch for dolphins at sunset - short lecture about Hawaiian Marine Mammals. Ø 7:30 - Head back to camp Ø 9:00 10:00 Quiet time in cabins. 10:15- lights out!
11 Monday Schedule Day 4 Ø 7:30 8:30 Breakfast in dorm rooms. Bring water & camera, wear hiking shoes, layers including rain jacket, sunscreen, and hat/sunglasses. Ø 8:30 9:00 Meet in Koa Room Ø 9:00 to 11:30 Hike along the edge of the caldera and to get a close look at the active summit of Kilauea Volcano. Guided hike provided by the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers at 10am. Ø 11:30 12:00 Lunch will be served in the Koa room. Ø 12:00 2:45 Free Time! Bowling, basketball, tennis, or game room. (Chaperones supervise recreation areas & campers at all times.) Ø 2:45 3:30 Make your own dinner & pack up for the lava hike Be ready to be picked up at your cabins. (See Packing List) Ø 3:30-8:00 Be picked up at the cabins to head out and see lava! (8 miles round trip.) (Dinner to be eaten on the lava field.) Ø Return to camp late after sunset.
12 Tuesday Schedule Day 5 Ø 8:00-8:20 Breakfast Ø 8:20-9:00 Pack lunch, beach stuff, snorkel gear, restaurant clothing, and rain jacket, and wear hiking shoes and swim suit under clothes. Ø 9:00 2:00 Head north to the lush Hamakua Coastline. The group will hike through tropical rainforests and see spectacular waterfalls tumbling through lava tubes. We will also learn about the fresh water indigenous fish populations on the Big Island. Lunch stop at Lapahoehoe Park. Ø 2:00-5:00 Aquatic recreation time, geothermal sediment absorption lab, polylithic structure engineering challenge, and voyage on a guided marine biology boat tour. Ø 5:00 Get cleaned up and dine at the ocean s edge. Ø 7:30 - We depart and head back to camp. Pack up things for tomorrow s departure from the camp at 8:00am.
13 Wednesday Schedule - Day 6 Ø 6:30-8:00 Participants eat everything they can before we depart, get bags ready to be put on the van, and pack snacks for the airplane trip. Ø 8:00 8:30 Drive luggage to the front of the camp and load boys bags into the shuttle. Girls and their bags will be in the vans. Ø 8:30 Vans leave for the airport. Ø The group will depart Hilo, have time at the airport for lunch and last minute shopping, then return to Portland late happy and exhausted from their adventure
14 LAVA UPDATE! U.S. Geological Survey Monday, April 2, 2018, 8:13 AM HST KILAUEA Activity Summary: Eruptions at Kīlauea Volcano's summit and East Rift Zone continue. The depth to the lava lake surface within the Halemaʻumaʻu Overlook vent was 30 m (98 ft) beneath the adjacent crater floor this morning. There is currently no active lava on the pali, the coastal plain, or entering the ocean. Summit tiltmeters are recording slight inflationary tilt. The seismicity in the summit area is within normal, background rates, with tremor amplitude fluctuations associated with lava lake spattering.
